This is really great information! I'm an enthusiast rather than a pilot, but it's neat to learn what situations trigger the alerts, and what the pilot might have to think about besides the obvious.

Now suddenly I'm thinking... Did the DHL B752 crews receive the RA reversal after the Bashkirian Tu-154 went against the TCAS (And following the ATC) RA?
@iamnashnash7673
@iamnashnash7673 7 лет назад
Thata exactly what am thinking the tcas didn't give the DHL the RA to avoid collision, the RA would have assigned the DHL plane to climb ,climb Now!!

Nash yeezy I don't think this feature was implemented yet

COD04MW A TCAS reversal will only activate if the aircraft are *at least* vertically separated by 100ft,in the DHL collision they where at the same height.

The TCAS gave them the correct action. The ATC didn't.

acording to proper SOP you always listen to atc even if it is a different instruction from tcas

i have something to ask,in resolution advisory,version 7.1 of TCAS II,what is the vertical rate climb limit in upward sense i climb??is't 1500 ft/min??

How can pilots crash their planes into other planes when there is such amazing system. It is nonsense to listen ATC controller instead of perfectly designed TCAS.
@COD04MW

+Çağdaş Elmas But unfortunately there was a case that the TCAS was put on standby and resulted in a collision like between an Embraer business jet and a GOL B378 in 2006...
@Dan20q

Then what is standby setting for??
@COD04MW
@COD04MW 8 лет назад
That's what I don't understand why does it even exist
@djonymorais
@djonymorais 7 лет назад
COD04MW It exists so you can set your transponder code before take-off without squawking, or you can stop sending your code as soon as you land, imagine if all planes kept on squawking after landing, the displays would be crowded. You can also recycle the system if you get a malfunction, by putting it on standby, and then back on TA/RA. (Traffic advisory/resolution advisory).

ATC will give you a prescribed flight path, and ATC in various locales will guide you and help avoid traffic because they have more information than you as a pilot do and they should know what altitude an aircraft is at and ensure there are no conflicts. however, because ATC doesn't know about traffic outside their own range and they also cannot physically see and identify every aircraft that might be in conflict, and pilots may also not be able to do so due to weather conditions or aircraft being in their blind spots, TCAS is designed as a last resort to avoid collisions between aircraft. TCAS is a redundancy, basically.

If it was my design, the advisories would be "Climb," "Increase Climb," "Decrease Climb," "Descend," etc, "Continue Climb/Descent" for a resolution advisory that requires no not-currently-occuring action, "Turn left" for a rapidly climbing/descending threat that can be avoided by turning left, "Turn right" same, "Continue turn" same no action, "Chandelle left" for a climbing turn left, "Chandelle right" for a climbing turn right, etc

The TCAS was designed specifically to not include horizontal manoeuvres because that would significantly increase the risk of conflict with other aircraft in a busy airspace. To do that, you also need much more sophisticated prediction models and computation resources to calculate 3D vectors of all aircraft in the nearby airspace in real-time (TCAS was not developed when such computational resources would have been available, and even now, adding more complexity always reduces reliability). On top of all that, keeping the system and the procedures as simple as possible makes CRM easier (and makes memory items like this easier to memorize). There are other considerations, like wanting the voice directives to be as clear, concise, and unambiguous as possible. Adding more possible directives leaves more room for ambiguity and confusion. Also, air traffic controllers are required 1,000ft vertical separation of aircraft, which means you can be much more confident in that you should have ~1,000ft of vertical airspace to work with. Annnnnnnnnnnnd these planes are not fighter jets; they can adjust vertical speed much faster than they can make turns.
