Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke slams what he calls a lack of leadership on immigration as migrant deaths increase at the border. Meanwhile, Eagle Pass Fire Chief Chris Manuel Mello describes the horrors his team has seen at the border. Chief Mello says one member of his team told him that he is “tired of seeing dead bodies.” What has stuck with the chief the most this last year is “the injuries. The drownings. The children who have drowned.”

Speed up the asylum process? There are people I know personally waiting for a legitimate visa interview in Bogota Colombia which has an over 700 day waiting period for an appointment. Take care of those trying to enter the USA legally first.

Applying for asylum IS also legal, though & it requires being on US soil. (US embassies & consulates don’t count as US soil for the purposes of asylum. How one enters the country doesn’t negate an asylum claim, as long as they turn themselves in to US authorities to apply.

You can’t stop people from crossing. That doesn’t make the border “insecure.” We need to reform immigration and increase resources available, so that there’s a better match between people requesting entry, and the low wage jobs that are available. Right now, we don’t let ENOUGH people in, compared to all the employers desperately looking for help. Without these low wages workers, our economy stagnates. Simplify regular immigration. In 1942, my grandfather travelled back and forth between his home in Mexico City, to San Francisco, nearly weekly. I’ve seen his immigration “paperwork.” It was a simple picture ID, with a place for a stamp. He didn’t need a passport, visa or anything else. The harder we make immigration, the more desperate people get. And non-compliance escalates with every person who successfully dodges the system.

If they’re seeking asylum, they do not have to cross at a port of entry. The problem is that the infrastructure is inadequate to process refugees and migrants. Border security has been asking for YEARS AND YEARS, for more personnel, more money, more facilities, more support. Biden has multiple bills on the table that provide at least a start on that. REPUBLICANS are refusing to give Homeland Security the funds to do their jobs. REPUBLICANS have been blocking the money needed to help Border Security do their jobs.

No there are not, Trump ordered BP to drag their heels on refugee and asylum applications so they only accept about 20 per day at just 2-3 of the major legal ports of entry, the rest of the hundreds of people in line each and every day just get sent away. Which is illegal by the way. If they would be accepted at the legal ports then they wouldn't need to cross into the US without permission.

Congress, the legal branch of the US Federal government, creates laws, including those pertaining to immigration. The President runs the Executive branch, and does not create laws (he/she approves or disapproves Congressional laws). In addition, Congress controls the purse strings for things like border patrol and immigration courts.

Yes it is, we accept 1.2 to 1.3million people legally each year and they make America stronger, without them the USA would wither and die. And in addition to that the USA can easily take in up to 2 million refugees and asylum seekers per year, so as long as the number is below that then we are fine. And it's not like we give them citizenship, there are a lot of legal ways for a person to stay in the US without being a citizen; work VISA, student VISA, Permanent Resident Status(which you have to have for 10 years before you can even apply for a citizenship test!), refugee status, and asylum status.

If they can cross 4 or more countries and thousands of miles, they can go to a different city in their country to wait for a answer. You can only apply for asylum within US borders. Embassies/ consulates don’t count. Point of entry doesn’t matter, as long as they surrender to US authorities & request application. They have to report to multiple US court hearings while their application is processed, which is clearly impossible to do if they aren’t even in the US. The only way to qualify, is if it’s too dangerous to stay in or return their own country, so your suggestion ignores the entire purpose of asylum. They have to wear ankle monitors until they’re accepted & 85% attend their hearings, as ordered. Most who apply are not accepted & are deported. Most undocumented immigrants aren’t asylum seekers. They’re people who legally got work visas, but overstayed them.

There is no such rule about applying for asylum; the USA is often the first country they come to where the drug cartels can't get to them as easily, so it's the only legitimate country for them to seek asylum in. Also, "we need a job" is a valid reason to ask for refugee status because if your family is starving to death and you don't have a job then you become a refugee like any other. As for people that are here illegally we can only guess at how many get by the Border Patrol, but figures would suggest less than 0.2%, so like maybe a few thousand each year. You do understand that when they say 2.7million people entered the USA without permission, we know that many people did because we caught them, as in Border Patrol caught them and apprehended them and processed them when they asked for refugee status. In fact most of the people crossing the border want to get caught so they can claim asylum or refugee status.
