Trail Camera Setup and Pickup: A Spring Among the Pines (My First Video of a Mountain Lion Hunting!)

I was excited about this trail camera setup as soon as I walked away from it. I found it exploring an area I had never been to (no one I know had either, so I didn't know what to expect). I scouted it using maps online then went in on foot. The animal sign was plentiful leading to this spring and I knew that the water there would be a magnet for wildlife. I ended up getting some of my best mountain lion footage yet here, including a lion actively hunting deer. I've also never had a spot with this many mature male coues deer in it. If you marvel at places like this, please read up on the history of the conservation movement in America and the importance of public lands. Lastly, if you enjoyed the video, please give it a like and hit the subscribe button to see more of my trail camera videos. Thanks for watching!

Michael, thank you for doing this. It brings so much attention to the drought situation and how water is the gift of life. Every time there is a fire or extreme heat I worry about the animals (not the people). Giving to AZ Fish and Game in their efforts to provide water to these precious beautiful beings. If anyone sees this comment , please really consider giving them a donation. They do it on their own with no government support.

If only he would have thought to place on the opposite side of the rock a large vat of carbonated water, so that we could finally get a straight answer to the age-old question as to which wild animals prefer: sparkling or spring water?

It’s unfortunate how us humans take it for granted. For example, my sister lives in an apartment and she has a young daughter, and apparently every day when she lets my niece take a bath, she lets her run the bath water for hours all because she doesn’t have to pay the water bill. That really made me think, “I wonder how many other people are wasting water like this”. It’s honestly infuriating.
@jlongobardy1612
@jlongobardy1612 Год назад
@@talonflame_brawlstars.7208 True and not true. I get your grievance, and your point is well taken, but in the end we are not capable of squandering water any more than we can destroy energy. That unused water will, ultimately, serve its vital purposes elsewhere--over and over and over again.
@talonflame_brawlstars.7208
@talonflame_brawlstars.7208 Год назад
@@jlongobardy1612 hey, I appreciate you giving me that information! I guess I forgot that the whole cycle exists. I just stress over things like that because tap water comes easy with no effort or worries involved for whoever uses it, but in the wild, a reliable watering hole can become a sand pit in what seems like the blink of an eye.

I saw my first cougar in my front yard. Was collecting bird feeders in after dark and shone the flashlight around. Thought it was a deer at first, it was just lying there, then I saw its teeth and backed off. One of the most magical moments of my life and the best ever wildlife experience. It was ten feet away.

It's really awesome to see the Mountain Lion (and the fox) let their guard down. Even your domestic cat or dog, acts differently when it knows you are around. For instance it will always be watching you, with ears or eyes. I've seen a cat playing by itself and being silly, actually get embarrassed and run off, when it realized I was watching through a window.

These videos bring me joy. I lived in the Southwest as a kid and your adult..graduated from Uof A. Used to borrow friends car and go out into the desert to mediate and watch the animals. I’ve had two encounters w a mountain lion. One at 12, when we moved to Ft Hauchuca. A rancher had a “pet” female he would bring to the grocery store and chain outside. While my mother was reading, I snuck out of the car a cuddled with her. She purred when I scratched her behind the ears. My mother eventually looked up from the book she was reading and started shrieking. The lion looked at me with great sympathy, lol. Later, my father who was supposed to correct me, asked me what the experience was like and told me to tell my mother I would not do it again. The second time was decades later. I was visiting my parents in Tucson and went for a walk in the foothills. Animals were coming down to drink from swimming pools. There was a bad drought and I met another lion on the walk. She showed no aggression, just looked at me with her beautiful eyes and went on her way. I did not share that with my mother! They were both experiences as immediate to me in my 70s as they were when they happened.

I really appreciate the explanation of how you knew this was a spring and one that would likely offer water for quite a while, and because there wasn't a better source in this area, would surely attract a wide range of wildlife. You even pointed out some tracks. The combination of knowledge and an ability to explain these things to novices is a gift. And then you were right. We get to see a lot of different wildlife, including the chase at the end! Subscribing and clicking for notices paid off, because I got to watch this video on the same day you uploaded it! :-) Thanks.

@@Michael.Outside Thanks for replying to people's comments. When you start getting hundreds of comments or a thousand, you may not be able to keep this up. So now I'm going to sound like a small child that wants its piece of candy. I mean, you gave me a thumb up and a heart, while I was editing my comment. I know because I got a couple of notices from RU-vid telling me. Unfortunately, if a viewer edits a comment after or while the uploader is giving a heart and/or thumb up, RU-vid removes it. That's because a viewer might change his comment to something negative. All I did was correct a typo and change one comma to a period. So, do you want to give me the thumb up and heart again? Videos like this make me wonder what the world smells like to these animals. I’ve always had an unusually sharp sense of smell, one my family always compares to something animalistic, but I know I’ve only scrabbled feebly at the surface of the massive olfactory iceberg. Sometimes I’m glad, because can you imagine how overwhelming that would be? But then on the other side I’m wildly jealous. If we as humans think apple pie smells good, imagine the opinion a mule deer has - it must smell like heaven!

Thanks for watching. Much much higher chance of a fellow hiker hurting you than a cougar, but always be alert 👍

cool clips, I love watching animals, this is the best location I've seen so far in all the trail cam videos I've seen, I'm getting my trail cam tomorrow, we are in the smoky mountains near a lake hope to tray various spots just to see what's around, not sure the bear come this way but that would be fun to see

Those deer r on high alert at all times, talk about ptsd. Sleep is a God thang. Lots of bucks, they look like theyve been eating better than the doe. Wouldnt it be great to have trees and fields of corn just for them. They love cucumber and pumpkin gardens for those who have them come n your yards.

Michael, your videos capture the beauty and wonder of God's creatures and landscape. The only native wildlife missing from your video's of southern Arizona is the magnificent Mexican Wolf. Forturnately I live in the middle of Mexican wolf habitat and see them regularly. Perhaps you could set camera traps in northeast AZ in the Apache National Forest some day. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve seen one near Raton, New Mexico. Way too big to be a coyote. It was amongst cattle at the side of a road.

Awesome wildlife! The puma after the deer in slow motion means I would be the dinner and not the deer. I can't run that fast! LOL

That last lion video seems to be a much smaller lion than the previous one. In the slo-mo, it looked to have an empty stomach too. The big lion must be eating well. Those are some very impressive Coues Bucks!, and plenty of them too! That's quite a honey hole you found for your camera!

It’s not quite as busy now that that spring has dried up but it was a fun place to camera trap.
