I would like to test the waters to see about doing a random series inside the channel of Off-Road trail etiquette, concerns surrounding land closures, and Offroad issues and ways we can better our Offroad community together, all based off the moab area. Let me know in the comments what you all think as well as topics or concerns you have. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.
Please support the Blue Ribbon Coalition in their fight to help keep public lands open.

Do not apologize for educating people about coming to Moab and using it responsibly. So much has been lost at the stroke of a pen. Thank you for being a voice of reason and an ambassador for the off road community. I would encourage you to continue to use this platform to help promote respectful off road activities.

As a USFS employee in SW CO and an avid snowmobiler, back country skier, backpacker, wilderness advocate, dirtbiker. I hate to see things shut down. There is plenty of space for everyone to recreate on OUR public lands without any conflict. I appreciate this video and everything you are doing this is the type of thing we need to keep trails open, to keep users in communication with each other to improve the access and relations with all types of users. There is a place for all of us out there and communication respect and education is the most important thing. Thanks again for doing this, absolute step in the right direction.

So then - what is your personal opinion on the United Nations pushing developed nations to remove public lands? It's simple - open a new tab - lookup the 30x30 and 50x50 land plans. It was literally the FIRST thing Biden did on Day one in office. To me - it's simple - we have globalist controls in place that - wish to move public lands into private ownership so corporations can make $$ and rent them back to the working class at a large profit. Now - of course they love to hide behind: "dude bro, we care about the climate and the environment dude bro..." all while - they push to sabotage companies like Boeing while - going right to Davos. This is nothing but corporate / gov't collusion at the highest levels

Relative to the off-road community I’m nobody. However, I’ve spent the last 35 years as an environmental professional in the west, the Front Range to be more specific. I’m not preaching, but offering a little experienced-based analysis. Moab receives between 7” and 9” of rain a year. In contrast, the region surrounding Knoxville, TN (another off road destination) receives about 6 times the rainfall. The indigenous landscape of the Moab region literally took thousands of years to slowly and incrementally develop. The moment a vehicle strays from designated trails in Moab and disturbs/destroys a portion of the native landscape, there’s a strong possibility that it will never recover. That’s how sensitive the ecosystem is in the desert. I will always stand for the rights of the people. However, stewardship over sensitive environments is everyone’s responsibility.

Maybe so - maybe you're right - HOWEVER - this is NOT about "saving the land" it's about the creation of natural asset companies and turning the land into yet another commodity the beta male losers on wall street can trade in order to buy the nice car in order then impress the girls. Go look up bidens 30x30 and 50x50 plans. To me it seems like everyone in moab has been living under a rock the past 20+ years. People in Moab - news flash - there are GLOBAL influences called the UN, Blackrock, and Non Governmental organizations that do not want people to own anything - no small businesses, no private land ownership, no owning your own vehicle, etc. To me this is so easy to understand: It's communism being scapegoated as "Dude bro, we're like saving the environment bro"

The fact is this has been going on for ages, I am 68 and I recall area closures taking place when I was a kid back in the late 60's. The closures being funded by the Sierra Club and other like groups. Our only chance of being able to roam the outdoors is if we do it responsibly. I would also tell you this I'm from California and there's lots of hiking trails and I've seen hiking trails close because of the hikers tearing it up so it's not just off-road community I don't understand why all of us who enjoy the outdoors can't pick up our own trash put our fires out stay on trail so that stays beautiful for everybody else. If this was back in the '60s or '70s this probably wouldn't be that big of an issue but in today's world with more people and the internet you got bigger crowds. More people more problems.

In the 70's the land available to off-road use was shrinking rapidly in many western states. After years of BLM public meetings and hearings we lost much of where we could drive off-road and it brought an end the the "heyday" of off-road recreation . Sadly the multitude of long distance racing events all but disappeared despite the efforts of many interested groups working to keep things alive off the pavement. I am sad to see we are now at the start of another decade of land closure. Thanks for bringing attention to this issue and for spreading the word about the Blue Ribbon Coalition.

Many routes have been abused beyond belief and as a result been closed. Those that are left are over used and abused regularly. Thank you very much. I'm a hiker and have been all over Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point, going upriver from Moab and into the La Sal. I've never minded vehicles passing on roads/trails designated for that purpose. But the amount of offroad vehicular bushwhacking that goes on in the region is something everyone who loves the area should be concerned about. The only way to make as many people as possible happy is for the business interests and those representing broader environmental concerns to co-operatively work toward a solution that is in their common interest. Rory and others are doing exactly what they should be doing -- dispassionately explaining the issue from their perspective.

Well said both of you. We see bad behavior here in Alaska a lot the last 15 years. Most of the issues come from visitors but we still have some bad actors that live here as well. Here we deal with people going out on the trails too early in spring (before they dry out), and they dig big ruts that ruin those trails for the summer for everyone else, because those ruts fill up and channel water, or tear away the top vegetation so enabling massive erosion when it rains. And then that causes people to “make their own trail” around the mud obstacles, making it even worse by creating mud pits.

Hi Rory: An 72 year old motorcycle rider here to say that I agree very much and am so glad you are doing this. I grew up in Missoula MT and back in the 70's our favorite motorcycle trail got closed and turned into a designated wilderness area even though it had been logged and had at one time people living up there. My father took our whole family on a picnic up the logging road to the Rattle snake lakes. first they closed it cars and trucks. Then later they closed it to motorcycle's and then later restricted bicycles to the first 10 miles of the road forcing you to walk the last 11 miles to our favorite lake to fish and camp. So from this old guy who still rides and now lives in Chelan WA I thank you for every thing you are doing.

Thank you for creating this video. It is so needed. As has been said, these are not new issues, but with such a large influx of people without experience drawn to off-roading by the ease of getting into it with the vehicles available today and by social media, who did not grow up around these hobbies with mentors to teach them how to properly respect the land, having respected social media content creators spreading messages of proper etiquette will hopefully help. I’ve been visiting Moab since the 90s and every time I go now, I just shake my head at the amount of poor decisions being made. Moab is one of my favorite places on earth, but it gets harder and harder to go there and see what is happening to the area. It is getting so tore up and abused. If it continues like it is, even if the trails stay open, it’s not going to be worth going there.

Important info ... good show Rory. I grew up in FL and if you don't fight for your right, they will close it down. You have to fight for your right to nature, we have few spots left from when I was younger, but too many are disrespectful, like you mention and it just gives them ammo to use against us.

Thank you Rory, you told the story very well about what’s causing us to lose our access for so many types of users. We are working on a strategy to be more effective at stopping the shutdowns and should have it ready before comments on the San Rafael Swell open in May. Thank you for your role in encouraging people to get involved.

I was in Moab in Ocotber 2023. Took the Utah OHV course, rented a side by side and a guide because I had never been there before. I thought the course wsa very important in alerting people to the cryptobiotic soil. I didn't see any in the Moab/Arches/Dead Horse Point area because even the hikers/tourists on foot are going everywhere. I noticed it right away when we visited Hovenweep National Monument. I think it's imperative, like Rory said, that everybody get together and educate people to stay on established trails. And Rory, I'm from "Back East" and there aren't many places to raise hell in a Jeep/ATV/SIde by Side without paying to go into a private park. Apparently, there is a perception that the West is wide open and people can just go where they want.

I think this is a function of people being trapped in large cities - which - then create added pressures - so people dream of "just leaving" and "just" doing whatever they "feel" like - and - you take a fatherless son with zero impulse control = society then has to babysit. So to me this is a bigger function of low trust societies, fatherless families, little to no enforcement of rules/boundaries due to the breakup of the family - then - you give some kid in his early 20's an ATV with a GoPro = "dude bro, anything for the gram dude bro, it's all about ME dude bro" and boom.... they're going 45+ in our 25mph zone... and then going off trail and leaving garbage. I think overall - the ATV issue is just a symptom of a bigger problem - a lack of intact families, lack of values - where are the values when the religion of the day is "just" do whatever feels good dude bro

I encountered Moab youth during the 90's that were ripping live scrub brush out of the ground with thier vehicles and dumping gas on them for a Camp fire. Moab should be the leader and start an off-road certification to allow people to use trails and hold them responsable. Starts at home.

Even up here in Maine 🇺🇸.. There's so many trails that have been shut down due to this same thing.. It's sad to see some of the favorites get gated up.. 😒 Sadly people ruin it for others that stay on the trails.. Great video bud

Deal with the same thing here on the East coast for snowmobiles and losing trails. Lots of folks feel they are entitled now a days and do whatever they want. Keep up the good fight and keep the trails open out there for the next generation. Educate as many as you can and get folks involved.

It's being done in steps, each group at a time that way they only fight a small group.so you sit back and say let them shut it down for that group it doesn't bother me .well your group will be next.years ago we formed a group,a trail association. Hikers ,bikers, motor cycles, atv, buggy and jeeps. What happened? Everybody blamed everyone else and nothing got done, these closure groups know this and they use it against us. You are spot on Rory United we stand divided we fall

There's a lot of versions of this quote out there, but "freedom without responsibility is just selfishness." As a resident of southern Utah, and a frequent visitor to Moab I appreciate the message you're trying to spread in this video. It's just so sad to see these beautiful wild places disrespected and trashed and then ultimately closed.

Rory, kudos for bringing this subject to the forefront. I live in Az and am seeing really bad actors out in public land not respecting the rules of any trail whether it be motorized or non motorized. Where I live we have off road bicyclist cutting new trails in state trust land. At night I hear the side by sides running up and down the washes in our area. The mentality is rules were made for thee but not for me. I stopped hiking the state land I mentioned because I got tired seeing the plants and trees branches cut because the bicyclist didn’t want to get scratched.

We had a big issue here in California about you're issue with closures. Well it took time to get it across to people but it worked. Hold club meetings get it out there meet at a steakhouse or a gym or something. We have still the yahoos but it has gotten smaller. Our biggest issues here are bathroom usage white flowers everywhere garbage broken vehicle parts left behind. We have volunteers that hit the trails 2,3 or 4 times throughout the year helping with cleanup. So meetings videos state park rangers will clean up your issues. Wish the best for ya'll...

These people that leave their trash on the trails are the same people that do the same other places. Unfortunately a lot that people that care are afraid to call these people out for fear of repercussions from the guilty party. Keep hounding the guilty and pounding your point across and never apologize for caring about keeping the trails open !!!! Hound and Pound!!!

Trail lightly is an organization that I’ve been a member of for over 10 years, and it explains everything that a trail rider needs to know about off Roading and that is basically do you know harm if you get stuck you leave ruts fill them back in move stones back where they belong do not tear up the trails because as you can see, you ruin it for everyone else!

I am surprised that you can take your vehicles where you do. Here in the UK we have many Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and other environmental designations, where there would be no chance of ‘wheeling’, so I applaud you for trying to make everyone aware of what they have and to not abuse it. The many and varied environments and landforms (not to mention the sacred side of things) in your part of the world should be enjoyed by all but in a respectful and responsible manner.

Great message - love your channel and cherish my experiences riding (pedal and dirt bike) in Moab area. And Thank You for even inviting SUWA - we don't have to treat others with an opposing view as enemies - you could teach our politicians a thing or two. A frank discussion with those folks could go a long way towards finding alternative approaches or adjustments that would benefit everyone. Good for you for being a mature adult - I shouldn't have to say that though. We need more people like this.

I’m glad you two are talking again! About those 317 miles of trails… I recorded most of them before they closed. I have hours and hours of trail cam showing no trash, no off trail marks, no overcrowding. Those trails were pretty unproblematic. I agree 100% about trail etiquette, but it bothers me they shut these trails down especially since there are truly problematic trails in Moab. I worry those trails are next.

Thanks for the great conversation, Rory. I really hope that the Blue Ribbon coalition is successful. I'm a mountain biker and don't jeep or anything like that and all I can say is that if motorized travel is restricted in Moab & surrounding areas mountain bikes are likely next on the list.

People who never have gone four wheeling in their lives are buying side by sides and don’t know how to responsibly go out and drive the trails. Just because it can go there doesn’t mean it can legally or responsibly go there. Training should be a requirement and the punishment for going off the marked and mapped trails should be extreme. Thank you for posting this video Rory.

I paid hard earned money for all of my off road toys, and I don't want to have to pay to fix them!!!! I have picked up trash on the trails, I even had to call a guy out for bringing bottles out!!! I always carry an onion bag for trash.

Great video - I commend you for doing it. I am a multi-use advocate and regardless of where someone stands on these issues it is important to listen to "the other side" and try to find common ground. Extremism only breeds hate, discontent, and more of the same - thus endless law suits. There is room for all of us to recreate but we will never figure it out of we simply sit in "our camp" and bitch about the other side. Again, good on you for taking the time to calmly talk about some of the issues.

My name is detail dan. I have been working out in moab for the last 20 years. It really has changed, the helping hand and brother hood I knew is gone. I love that place but it's a privilege not a right to be there. U must show respect and love and compassion. Not build another hotel. . I can't even go there anymore. The cocky traffic jams are 2 much. Such a privilege to go work there every spring out at bfe and to be apart of it. But those days are gone. Really appreciate what u do . And keeping people safe out there is a big deal. Thanks I hope we can all play in the sand box together.. before we lose the privilege.

We have the same problem in michigan, much of the trail system goes over private lands through lease agreements, what happens particularly since the arrival of side by sides, people just wont stay on the trail causing damage to property and the reaction is,"I'm not leasing my land for your trails anymore", lack of self control is the is the biggest enemy of the rec sport.

Good discussion Rory. I ride with a group from our local community her north of Tucson on side by sides. Most of the areas that we ride in are pretty remote and very seldom do we encounter jeeps, but we never leave any trash behind and all are stock machines in regard to exhaust systems. If we see trash, we pick it up.
