You said you don't recommend this to a new player. I'm a new player, never played a tabletop rpg. Wanted to start with this, what do you recommend else? Thanks.
@@kopgamer it is a great introduction to horror roleplaying and I really hope it fits the bill for you. Once you've gotten comfortable with that, let me know and I'd be happy to help you jump into the full game experience.
@@questwise4077 Thank you. I've checked the contents of the starter set and seem like it's exactly what I was looking for. I'll start with it, let's see how will it go.
You really do not need Trail of Cthulhu or gumshoe: Do the roll and still give essential clues even at a failed roll. I do like the split sanity attributes though
Yeah, people cling to rolls too much, I feel. Success on a library use roll could give extra clues, while failure would still give the necessary core clues. What I tend to do is use time to constraint the research. Failing a library use roll might give you something, but maybe not what you were after. In certain scenarios, like the haunting, I then tend to inform the player that, during the whole afternoon, he was only capable of checking one pile of books, from the group of multiple piles and he could come back the next day to try and research more. The player will then weight that and consider if he wants to spend his next morning/afternoon in the library of if he wants to do something else. Regardless of what system is being used, crucial clues should never be locked behind rolls.
@@18ps3anos I would tend to agree. I like the philosophy of rolls in the 7e book: it’s about possession of the story not failing or passing the task necessarily. And there is always luck points which also are subject to improvement check every session. I hear people say often about not “hiding clues behind roll”, but to me it’s either no roll or failed rolls pass with consequence if it’s essential.
Well, in Mythos World (pbtA) you roll 2 D6. Does that mean, that the game ist twice as good? Thanks for the video. Honest Question: From all the different Cthulhu Systems, which one do yo like best? For Oneshots with new players I prefer 7th edition. For campagnes I prefer Mythos world. i dont know trails and pulp yet but I´m eager to get to know them both.
Jonathan Baldridge actually, after having played both, I think I prefer 7th edition. Much more support and flexibility. Though Trail is simple and has some cool traits, I still gravitate towards 7th.
