Delray Tower is Detroit, Michigan’s busiest railroad hot spot. This site is located at Delray Junction on the south side of Detroit and along Interstate 75 just north of the River Rouge. Shot in the 1990’s, this manned interlocking tower was one of the last in the country, and funneled 60 to 90 trains per day in and out of Detroit. Delray Tower consists of a grade level crossing of the double-track Norfolk Southern (ex-Wabash) and CSX (ex-Chesapeake and Ohio) that crossed and joined the double-track Conrail (ex-New York Central) mainline. Seven railroads are featured in this program including: Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, Grand Trunk, Canadian Pacific, Canadian National and Amtrak. The train action includes mainline freights, locals, transfers and light power moves. The 1990’s diesel power consists of standard cab GE, ALCO & EMDs along with early wide-cabs. Growing up in Delray, I would see these and many other trains not shown on this video. There were time's there would be s steam train rolling through past the historic Delray train tower. On the set of track's between the train tower, and the I-75 freeway - there was a strip of land that we kid's from the neighborhood called: "The Hills". Those set of track's would take the trains North toward the Fischer Building, and South over the Rouge River towards Toledo. We kid's would take our bicycles on the hills, stop halfway between Dearborn Ave. and the train Bridge over the Rouge River - and either moon, or stand there giving the middle fingers to the peoon the passenger trains going by. We figured that all of the kids and adults sitting by the window's would never see us again in our lives, so who cares if they see our naked butts or getting the national sign of discontent? Fun time's playing along the railroad track's. Used to catch bums and hobos on those hills, and throw rocks at them. Our rock ammunition came from the track beds of those two sets of rails. Fun times indeed.
