I'm 64 and have been playing drums (hobbyist) since I was a teenager. Your teaching skills are very user friendly. You have taught me more about beats than I've learned through the years. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and time with the drumming community. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks...

Thanks for watching and for the kind words! I've been teaching drumlines for 25 years, so through trial and error I think I have worked out what is effective. Since I do all the RU-vid for basically free, I always like to hear when I have actually helped someone out. It justifies all the time I spend. Take care.

It is also excellent because your playing is excellent! And no fancy stuff around, some good traditional variations. Will work on that... Keep on and all the best to You!!

@@RedeyePerc Just stumbled upon this guys videos - basically saying that drum shells are mostly hype. More important to use quality heads and tune well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xnmLVURn6hk.html&feature=emb_logo&ab_channel=REFondrums

SagaContinu I agree with that mostly. As long as a drum is round, you can get a good sound from it. I think shell construction is mildly important.
@SagaContinu
@SagaContinu 4 года назад
@@RedeyePerc any tips on learning to tune well? Is it mostly just equal tension on lugs and finding a sound that is pleasing to the ear? I know there are drum dials as well but I don't own one and am only just starting to play more acoustic stuff instead of using the silent stroke heads.
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 4 года назад
SagaContinu That’s basically it...equal tension all around. Most drums will have a sweet spot that sounds best, but will sound good over a decent range. Tap at each lug location and try to match the pitches.

Thanx, Shane! I'd like to share my technique. I play at the bottom of the snare closer to the rim and put my accents in the middle so my right hand is moving back and forth. When I'm playing live, this helps my backbeat really pop.

With today being my weekly drum lesson, I noticed that your stick grip is different on your left hand. Is there a reason why you don’t hold your sticks in the same manner? I was told that in a marching band your left hand would be correct.
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 4 года назад
I am playing traditional grip here. The left hand plays in a sort of underhanded way. It's a traditional way to play snare drum, it's used almost exclusively in drum corps, and it still sees use on drumset today. I play traditional when I play jazz and really snare drum heavy stuff like this. I play matched grip (both hands like my right hand here), when there is a strong backbeat pulse. Thanks for watching!

Hey Mr Red Eye I am a self taught drummer. I have learned a lot watching a few of your videos. You also taught me how to play 50 ways. Thank You so much. Do you have any beginner lessons onn how to learn the Main rudiments? Thank You
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching! I am very glad that I have been a help. I do not have any beginner lessons posted right now, sorry. I have considered doing some, but it would probably be non-drumset and more marching band style which is my strength. To be honest, I think 2/3 of the rudiments aren't very useful anymore with today's styles. I would focus on developing very good timing and a strong ability to play accents and taps at different volumes consistently. Master the very basic things before worrying about harder stuff. The basics are 95% of what I play today for videos and for pay. Good luck!

What's with the sticks dude?
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
I assume you're talking about the tape. When I started filming these, my cameras were cheap and would go in and out of focus. Camera lenses have it easier when there is sharp contrast, and when I started using the tape, the problem went away, especially in overhead shots where the snare head is white and the sticks are very light. I have since started using GoPros, which have infinite focus, but it still shows movement a lot better than without. I even do it live now since I'm used to the look.
