This is a portion of a video I did for my elementary school students of a cab ride on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley's New Tygart Flyer. The company uses engines from the defunct Western Maryland Railroad.
The kids especially enjoyed the excellent view inside the 1800 foot Cheat Mountain "S" Tunnel near Elkins, WV.
The extended version of this video is at: • New Tygart Flyer Train...

I'm happy that they are continuing to offer this ride. In my extended version (link above in description) I did include the Falls of Cheat River as well as the locations where the tracks to Durbin once intersected with this line.

That’s a skinny tunnel. Looks like you’d be in trouble if you were walking thru and a train showed up.
@goodspirit717
@goodspirit717 9 лет назад
Reply to Chris Bow: Workers would be told about the train schedule. Most tunnels do have safety spaces on the sides. We were told for this Cheat Mtn tunnel that trains go through it slowly. And there are 2 locations where the walls are dug back, though with barely enough room for someone to stand.

anytime work is done on rails it's done between schedules of running trains and radioed and verified few times over before proceeding to do it.

That tunnel is pretty narrow! Probably would not want someone to walk in the there or you won't know what's coming towards you!
@walterschivo9123

I was going to ask if anybody walked through the tunnel, but judging from the narrow size and distance, probably not. There wasn't any graffetti in the tunnel either.

Why on earth do they make the tunnels so tight!
@walterschivo9123
@walterschivo9123 4 года назад
I think it's to prevent people from walking inside the train tunnels, but sadly, some people will insist on doing that. Only do it if there is absolutely no train coming, but best not to try that unless you got a good train scanner and can understand what they say.

Think about the era in which it was built (late 1800s) and realize that was before power equipment and was cut out by hand.

Gosh, that is a narrow tunnel! Was it used during the steam era? For a steam crew the blast from the loco' would have been 'uncomfortable. Interesting to see the construction.
@goodspirit717
@goodspirit717 8 лет назад
It appears the tunnel was in use by the late 1800's during the steam era. Some books have noted that steam engines in tunnels made for a hazardous situation for train crews.

Looking for the owner. Pentrex Railroad Videos would like to use your footage. We do, of course, pay for footage. RU-vid does not allow any contact info here, so that is a problem. Reply to this comment if interested and we can work something out. :-)

How is it possible that there’s no locomotive exhaust stains on the ceiling of the tunnel?? Locomotive exhaust comes out at high pressure; you’d think there would be a black streak on the ceiling from beginning to end.

The cost of boring a hole of this length is extensive, many tunnels up here in Canada have had the height increased to allow double stack thru, didn't look like they did that in the video

@A_10_PaAng_111

It does on modern freight locos. I think a loco engineer posted a vid of his freight going through it and the sides of his loco is getting dinged and scraped.

In the days of stream, where did all the black smoke go?
@goodspirit717
@goodspirit717 4 года назад
The smoke from the steam engine would go backwards along the train in the tunnel. That often caused problems for the rest of the train crew.

@mikegross6107

I think they would be SOL if a knuckle broke in the middle of that tunnel, doesn't seem like enough room for a person on either side to make repairs. Guess they would have to PUSH the train from the rear.

why you blow horn at tunnel
@nudist0885
@nudist0885 10 лет назад
In case someone is in it. Freight trains always blow their horns when they're less than 100 yards away from entering a tunnel. They can signal to people that are about to go into a tunnel that they should wait; They can signal to someone that's already in a tunnel that a train is coming.
