TRAIN DRIVER'S VIEW: From sunshine to near zero visibility to sunset

NOTE: This is the NON-NARRATED UPLOAD and in true 4K.
This Sunday departure from Ål to Voss runs mainly during winter to help alleviate the pressure for the Regional Trains from Oslo to Bergen. During the weekends there are many passengers going back home from the Ski Resort in Geilo and cabin areas at Ustaoset, Haugastøl and Finse.
When you see how flat the light is and how little visibility there is on the mountain during conditions like this, you'll understand why not being fully equipped and knowledgable could be the end of you.
The Consist today is 2x Class 75H (Stadler FLIRT) which has 554 seats in total, with standing passengers it can take about 1068 passengers.

HinduCowGirl, I have a question. If you say you are Hindu, why is talking about religion prohibited in your channel? Hinduism has no such prohibition, but quite the contrary, it talks about religion most of the time.

Excellent and so quiet. In country Victoria Aus we have bombardier trains with 2 noisy cummins diesels slung underneath. 1 for drive 1 for aircon, they are talking about electric. Hope so. The noise in deafening. I listen to music on my iPhone when I go to Melbourne. No use driving takes ages.

Lots of passengers boarding at Geilo. I guess they're commuters? Backcountry enthusiasts? Going to a Rolling Stones concert? Fleeing their annoying families? I was in Narvik years ago; this looks even more remote. Trygve Lie was my friend's grandfather. It's late at night in Colorado and I don't have anything intelligent to relate. Watching your videos is soothing. I keeping wondering what the folks in these little Norwegian towns do for work and for entertainment. I also wonder that about Oklahoma....but not often.
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 4 года назад
Hey there, That is cool! How did you like Narvik? Did you go there winter or summer? This train is a extra train that runs on Sundays during the winter half because of the increased amount of passengers from the ski resorts at Geilo and the cabin areas at Ustahoset, Haugastøl and Finse.

@@RailCowGirl Hi. Great that skiers can get to the slopes via train. Very civilized. (I grew up in New York City suburbs; we skied mostly in Vermont. Fairly long drive, often in bad weather. Beautiful mountains, but snow nothing like Colorado where I now live. That is, if we can ever ski again. Not the biggest concern right now.) I was in Narvik in August. I'd taken a year off during college--now known as "gap year", which sounds foolish to me. A friend who'd also taken off and I traveled for about four months, mostly western Europe though we did visit Egypt...in July. Very hot but no tourists except us. Anyway, we were flying out of Amsterdam and with a week left on our Eurail passes we figured we'd go as far north as we could and back in the time remaining. So we ended up in Narvik. It was a long time ago; I recall heavy industrial equipment at the port. I wish I'd known the town's World War II history at that time, as I imagine there's a museum. We met a few local kids and drank beer on a hill overlooking the town. Quite rainy. The trip up there was wonderful, especially the fjord just north of the line during the long traverse west from Sweden. I remember stopping a few times at tiny remote platforms for hikers to embark/disembark. My dad was a train buff, and I really enjoy traveling by rail. It's especially great in Europe, one of the best things about traveling there. I so hope to return soon. I'm totally fed up with the U.S. right now. ( ' _ ' )

I believe this is my favorite ride. Both sides of Finse is so beautiful. Tell us about the long tunnels east and west of Finse. They both have sidings . Are there other uses for the sidings besides parking a train to allow another pass ? And I see the west side long tunnel has a branch off to the north. Thank the railway for buying you a loco with a great headlamp, and installing new lights in the tunnels.

The Bergen Line has a max speed of 160kmh/100mph. On other lines around Oslo the max speed is 200 - 210kmh, most new lines and tracks has a technical speed limit of 250kmh. :)

Do you have problems with ear pressure? I was curious about the snow and then saw you change altitude from more than 1100m on that part of the line
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 4 года назад
You don't get problems with the pressure due to the steady and slow climb. This because your ears have time to equalize the pressure. This is not like in a aeroplane where you have rapid climb.

How deep can the snow be before you have to take action and further how deep before it's a no go?
@RailCowGirl
@RailCowGirl 4 года назад
They have routines for clearing the track, but during the worst conditions it can be two meters of snow in matter of just 30 minutes. If it becomes to deep you might get stuck. The thing here is that as long as the plow can toss the snow to the sides everything is fine, but if it just gets pushed to the sides and come back down.. then things starts to get hairy.

I guess you mean the snowsheds. In the tunnels some may get in through the openings, but not much. The snowsheds however are made as wooden structures. And near impossible to be made to keep the snow out. What I have a problem understanding is how the ***** do they get the snow OUT of them? I can imagine are the 7 small guys singing "Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go" as they carry the snow out of these snowsheds. :-)
