The two front and the two rear cars are not used for embarking or disembarking on this station. I used this station a lot a few years back, around the time this movie was filmed! Maybe I was one of those few disembarking this time?? :)

Having seen a few videos of trips like this, including on this line, I was struck at how this one made me fell more like a tourist. Making our way out of Oslo on a bright day, and enjoying the green hills all the way to our destination, made me feel like I was on a genuine holiday.😎🌿⛱🌤

So far thru 19:30, other than the tunnel, the video is quite clear. I love the part where the train is made up in the yard, then brought into the station - don't get to see that too often in the videos! And the EL18 is such a quiet locomotive! Wonderful stuff. Dog

I did this RU-vid trip both ways a few years back, once in winter and once in summer...awesome experience if you can't travel. I've recommended it to several people traveling to Norway.

13:45 Elisenberg ghost station Wikipedia: Elisenberg Station (Norwegian: Elisenberg stasjon) is an unfinished railway station within the Oslo Tunnel on the Drammen Line in Oslo, Norway. The ghost station was partially built during the construction of the tunnel between 1971 and 1980, but has never been put into use. It is located between Nationaltheatret Station and Skøyen Station, at Elisenberg in Frogner. A 220-meter (720 ft) long center platform and part of the access way has been built, but never completed. While the station initially was not put into use because of lack of funds to complete it, it is now unlikely that it will ever be completed, as the need for a station has disappeared and an opening would need a large investment of funds.

I forgot to mention that somewhere along the track is a three car work train that rolled off the track down a bank. It's at a point where the train has to go real slow round a tight bend.

El 18 weighs in at 96t and each of the 8 Type 7 coaches weighs 40 tons, so a total weight of 416tons, so its on the light side for a long-distance locomotive-hauled train in Norway

You're so lucky to ride this awesome train cab in Norway. This is a stupid question, but are some of the train stations closed permanently? I noticed it when it bypassed the stops.

Yea a lot of the stations are closed for passenger travel. Some of the bypasses are stations served by other trains, before Drammen.

Most stations have platforms and are for people to travel to and from. Local trains stop at most of these. Other stations are just for the trains, if the need should arise to switch around, wait for other trains to pass by or whatever. Long distance region trains only stop at the bigger stations, or the stations with the most people going on/off

Yes, a lot of the stations are closed down for passengers, especially after Hokksund Stasjon (57:00)

Very nice clip! I work as "tågklarerare" (togekspeditör) in Sweden. Any chance you could record the new double track section along Mjösa? I can't find anything of that on RU-vid. :)

The locomotive is an NSB El 18, a modded variant of the Swiss SBB-CFF-FFS Re 460, with a top speed of 200km/h.

Dana Mack Been looking an reading about that too, it's a way youtube handles bandwidth to make sure that everyone gets what's needed. And I've also noticed from several other vids that trees, grass and bushes gets blurry when moving - truly annoying. The locomotive is the Norwegian configuration of RE460, knows as EL18 :)

328 ton is the weight for the cars itself. The loco is 96 ton.424 ton is the total weight for the whole train. Its 227 m long and the breaking % is 147. Eatch car is 26 m long and the loco is 19 m long.

+paul vindal 147% brake capacity? In Italy, on the regional trains I drive, it is usually between 100 and 115 %. We have a series of EMU with 130 % and an EMU used on International Traffic with Switzerland which has 145 %. But I also drove a regional train with 65 % (four unfitted coaches out of eight)!

Thats is correct. When u have 8 cars of type B7 on those trains them u have bracking % of 147 if all cars is in brake groupe R og R + Mg.

Damn, we don't have the type R brakes. Are you referring to the magnetic field brakes? We cannot use them in Italy due to one of our train protection systems which uses continuous inductive pulse code cab-signalling on most of the double track lines here (the system is overlying the SCMT, the Italian discontinuous Train Protection System).

+Fabrisíus In norway we have two Brake settings that we use on loco hauled passanger trains. R and P. R have the best brakes. we always use R except a few times. We also have magnetic brakes in addition to that. But we dont add that brake into the breaking %. Because we only use it in emergansy breaking.

Look at 0:00 and compare that to 10:26, even at 10:12 before you entered the tunnel it was sharper than 10:26. Dog

Trying to figure out how long it would take for a conductor to recognize if someone was walking on the railroad tracks in front of them. If anyone has any information on how much time a conductor would normally have to blow the whistle when spotting someone, that would help. Also, how fast is the train going between 38:39 and 38:58?

+NoNameC68 Max track speed by these kinds of trains in Norway is usually 130-140 km/h. Mainly due to the old layout of the tracks, not the engines. But this train does not tilt, so it has to keep this limit even if the track is better. The part of the track they are on at 38:30, is however a high speed track, rebuilt for the oslo airport express, from Drammen-Oslo-Gardermoen. So the speed COULD be over 200 km/h with a different train.

+NoNameC68 The Trackspeed is 130 km/h between 38:39 and 38:58, you could not drive any faster than that with another train.

At 38:56 there is a yellow triangular sign pointing down with a "9" on. It means the speed limit is down to 90km/h. The track speeds vary greatly, depending mainly on the curvature of the track, as the track itself allows for higher speeds than this. It can be up to 130 km/h at the straignts, and all the way down to 40-50 km/h in the curviest sections

I'm not understanding the point of the horn. Around the 1:30:00 area there's a lot of horn usage but doesn't really seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Crossings are scarce and I can't see any obstructions on the track ahead. Any thoughts as to what's going on?

It may be the horn is used to scare away animals. Where there are forests there are likely to be deer and elk.

Whenever he passes a yellow diamond shaped sign with a black horizontal bar across it he gives a single blast of his horn. It seems the crossings he encounters after passing this type of sign are the unprotected ones, single traffic lane, foot path, etc. and with no active crossing protection. The grade crossings that have bells, lights and crossing arms that come down don't get a horn blast.

jp law: That's not quite true. In HCG's Flåm line videos, there are crossings that get a horn blast even though they are gated.

Emergency lighting to illuminate the escape path, they have a backup battery in case of a power outage.

Very - large landmass (a little bigger than Germany), with an enormous coastline and small population (5.2mill) spread all over makes it very costly to both lay track and roads. Many tunnels and many bridges needed.

Lol. Remember at this point he is engine only. He stops to reverse into the track where the carriages are. He even takes the camera to the other end of the engine so we can watch. :)

If you hear the horn by that sign, it means you have to sound the horn in front of a level crossing.
