Train your dog LEAVE IT from TRASH and FOOD on WALKS

Teach your puppy or adult dog to not pick up trash or food when out on a walk on or off leash. The key to successful training is to do training set ups rather than try to train your dog only in real life when he encounters something. This is because if the dog has already gone over to whatever it is in the environment and or even started to pick it up and eat it and you call your dog away or say leave it, the behavior of searching for the item or even picking it up can be inadvertently reinforced meaning that your dog might continue to search for trash. In this video I show how you can set up training set ups in which you control the environment and can set the dog up to do understand that food on the ground is a situational cue to leave it alone. The great thing about this method is that you can teach the dog to completely ignore whatever it is rather than be told to leave it AFTER investigating whatever it is. Proactive behavior management such as working on the issue BEFORE your puppy starts to do it means saving lots of time training down the line. One of the wonderful things about using positive reinforcement to train is that usually the one exercise has multiple benefits, such as this exercise can help teach dogs impulse control and reduce leash pulling drastically.

I never thought about bringing the rubbish/rabbit poop with me to train at home! Definitely will be doing this. As my pup's 'leave it' on walks isn't as strong as her leave it with food at home. Thank you for always providing incredible tips

I trained my dog this essential command some time ago from following one of Emily's other tutorials. Have been able to save my dog from possible ill health/toxins on many occasions now thanks to Emily. Being a cavalier her mouth is near the ground & so can pick item’s quickly & without notice. She understands what is off limits now. Thanks for another amazing tutorial. Absolutely loving your channel & all what you do. Thanks.

Another thing I didn't mention in this video but that by using a variety of different treats can really help decrease the novelty of the stuff they find in the environment. Also by using different types of treats in the training games insides, first starting with low value and working up to high value

This is exactly the video I needed for my rescue boy thank you! So much food and rubbish being dropped on our streets at the moment and I don’t always spot them before he does. He has a great leave it if I spot it first or if he gets something that is hard to chew, but if he can just swallow it down it wasn’t working. This approach for the environment to be the cue will be perfect. Should I use a totally different cue now or is it ok to still use my “leave it”.

It is amazing. Basically you give all you need to know in nine minutes. I am not stupid, just a bit slow. That is why I took your self-study course "Leash Walking Connected. There you covered the "Leave it exercise 'extremely well. Every day we enjoy the benefits of this course. I think Sarah Owens touches the heart of the matter: "Self control behaviors are simple: eye contact, head turns, moving towars you away from something. What makes them so hard is the level of fluency required to compete with other contingencies in he environment.' How do we get those behaviors freakishly fluent?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
I think the key is setting the games up so its an easy choice for the dog and they are having a positive emotional response. Similar to working with a dog who is worried about handling or strangers, if you keep bumping the criteria up when the dog is still uncertain and slightly worried, you arent going to get the reliable result as if you stay on each step until the dog is happy and confident.
@Haferkoko
@Haferkoko 3 года назад
I did all of this, and also started rewarding my dogs on walks for checking out inedible trash but moving on, and this helped a lot to understand the concept that sniffing is ok but touching is not. I also said my leave it cue if they were getting a bit too interested in the object or sniffed a spot in the grass for too long and dug their nose too deep into it. They rarely eat trash or leftovers anymore and if they pick it up and I say the cue they will immediately drop.

Thank you so much for this video - I've been looking for a video on default leave it in the environment. My dog really loves to find and eat mushrooms, which is so dangerous! I assume we could follow the same process with collecting mushrooms (making sure they're not poisonous obviously, just in case) and putting them in a container like you've shown?

It never, ever occurred to me to practice with the actual poop in a controlled environment. That seems brilliant. I don't know if it will be able to do the trick-- this dog loves moose and horse manure more than anything and the trails have a ton-- but it's certainly worth a shot. Plus he's on a ski-jor line out in front, so there's little I can do in the heat of the moment, so to speak. I am definitely going to collect some and practice as you've shown here!

Thank you so much for this my dog loves finding and eating cat poop on walks! Do you have any suggestions or a video on cat food when it's inside the house? My dog seems to like it more than any treat and anytime the door to the cat is left open on accident, he immediately goes for the cat food.
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
Could you perhaps create a cat feeding station that is high up so the dog cant reach it? Or a box the cat goes in but the dog cant? If the dog is bigger. That would be a lot faster and easier than training the dog to leave food that is laying around on the floor. It's like if you like snacking on junk food, to just decide one day your not going to but you have all the snacks around the house tempting you.

The problem I have is that when I’m training and my dog knows I have treats and he will ignore what’s on the ground and always look at me. But in instances where I don’t have a treat I can’t get his attention. Or he instantly goes to eat the poop or garbage off the ground while he has the chance. He is 8 months old is this to be expected, do I just need to be patient?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
I suggest using the environment as a reward in training sessions. Ask for behaviors when you have no treats and the reinforcer is to sniff a bush or meet a dog or person. This video talks about how to initially train it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2-ezmzKZ8kM.html And you can set up situations where your dog doesnt know you have a treat, if you have some in a zip lock baggie and surprise the dog.

I've mostly succeeded with this while out and about, at home is totally different 😭 my pup used to try pick up every piece of horse poop on our walk, now maybe 9x out of 10 she will sniff and walk away. If she does pick it up I will stop and we don't keep walking until she drops it. At home she has stopped eating rabbit poop but the cats keep catching wild rabbits and leaving them half eaten all over the property, which she finds and refuses to drop 😪 in fact, she will pick it up and run.. Not sure how to get her to stop doing this as we're having to wash her almost daily because she smells like the walking dead after rolling in it too lol

I suggest for the moment walking the puppy on a harness with a dragging long line to manage her until you get a reliable recall away from the dead animals.

Great video. Thanks! I've been brainstorming ways to train this with snakes. We live in an area where there are rattle snakes. I'm thinking snake skins would be a good place to start. Anyone know where to get one? How about simulating a snake experience? A fake snake with real smell? A real snake in a cage? I'd be interested if anyone reading this has any thoughts on that. In the mean time I'll definitely be working on this skill with other tempting items that are a little safer. :)

www.tawzerdog.com/programs/a-positive-rattlesnake-avoidance-training-and-safety-program Pam has a dvd on it. I personally teach dogs to ignore wildlife, then with snakes when we see them I do use my leave it cue, and my dogs have a tendency to avoid walking near anything Ive said to leave so it works great, but they dont always smell and see the snakes so I am just careful when snakes are out.

How do you prevent or train a dog that has learned when you’re not paying attention that they can sneak it? Also for humping other dogs would you do the same thing or something different? Thank you
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
Well its super hard if the dog has a long history of taking food from counters. As its literally been training with treats to go on the counters. The key would be management and prevention between training - put food away. Then do things like leave food on low coffee tables while watching tv that you can see so the dog gets used to it being there for an extended period of time. The thing is though for some breeds like Beagles its harder than others. So if you had a beagle that was really driven to find food, I would just get used to the habit of putting food away after eating it. But for the dogs who are super interested in stuff thats different from their meals, I would also use a variety of treats to get them less excited about novelty. Humping I would interrupt before it starts, and give the dogs a break from playing, you could also use the cue leave it.

He somehow even knows if im watching on a webcam. Lol. I do like the clear vented food containers as a good intermediate step! @LindsayHaven

Just a thought. What if you get her to do something for you, but then you treat her with something she's not expecting? If she needs to see the treat, show her, have her do the trick, then giver her a treat from your other hand. Then phase out her seeing the treat before, she should learn that she gets the treat from the unexpected spot, and she'll look for that instead of seeing one in your hand. I also have a small pouch on me, even in the house. It's only now, after a year of having my pups, that I have started to forget it sometimes and they don't seem to notice. www.therunningbuddy.com/products/buddy-pouch-mini-plus

I suggest training her in a non distracting environment when shes interested in the food. This video talks about what it looks like when a dog is not interested in what you have ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6P_MYUhd_BY.html You can experiment with different types of treats in an environment your dog is comfortable. Basically the key to successful training is to build the behaviors strong in a place that is easy for a dog. If the dog is on a walk most likely they are excited and so wont want to listen and learn behaviors. Its best to train them at home before trying to use them on a walk. Also for a shepherd you could get her interested in working for toys.

@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
There are many reasons for why a dog might not eat food, there are many medical reasons you can check with your vet, and then there are reasons such as that the dog ate a lot of food that day or the day before and is not feeling like eating more yet, then there is also the reason that the dog is stressed or very excited, some dogs wont eat when outside because they are so excited to be outside.

@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
This can be normal and is just a matter of making sure to not let the puppy rehearse it. Find a place to walk where its pavement and grass. Instead of the back yard take the pup in the front yard or on a short walk, when you go outside in the yard, bring novel new toys and play keep away to build interest in toys. If it seems like an obsession, one thing I suggest for alone time use a large pen, that has a crate in it, with access to chews that are safe, instead of just a crate. Or if the puppy is in a pen, work up to longer periods loose in the house making appropriate choices.
