I really needed this! My girl is so so smart and easy to train, but pulling toward smells on walks and public (she does fine at home 😂) is such an issue that she just can’t grasp. I will definitely use this to see if it works! I also love the little tip about how to get the dog beside you instead of running right in front of you when they’re too excited for the reward! I know I say this all the time in the comments, but you’re seriously the best and I respect you so much
Lol. I did a good job because Wish is a very hyper dog. The key is breaking the steps up small so the dog looks well trained. For a dog even more hyper than Wish, you might have to do the settle in the middle of the living room first, and just take a step toward the door and return.
@@kikopup is the idea behind only showing positive behaviors is that those are the behaviors you wish reinforce? For example, if the dog starts to pull, you simply stop the specific training, work on something related that the dog can successfully do and then pick up walking and treating when the dog is doing the desired behavior (being calm)?
Thank you so much, Emily! I needed this so much--my two little "monsters" (lovely little dogs) just love to greet people. A problem that I guess is better than being fearful of strangers. But they will rush up to people, jump up on them, and generally become too excited. I've got a good idea now how to start with training them to greet people more calmly.
Awe :) Yes it can be hard. Some dogs are so impulsive it's hard for them to do everything at snails pace like we humans do it. And it can be overwhelming for us too.
I love the "OkaAy GeEt It" excited because that was my mistake today training this and my dog got super excited anyway I laughed it was a funny moment during training

Could you do a video on starting to work with a blind dogs, (tips and toys) and integrating him into your pack (I recently rescued a three year old, unsterilized blind cocker spaniel three years old...and have six other adopted rescue dogs, three years to 10 years old. or any resources. What type of treats do you recommend? Previously during training we used turkey hotdogs. I worry about the amount of fat in the hotdogs and the overall quantity my dog needs because she is very food motivated. I don't want for her to get too heavy since training her will take a long time. Thanks

I've been letting my spaniel race up the stairs in the morning and jump on the bed to say good morning to my husband . Trying to get control at the doorway to upstairs has been tricky with the anticipation levels present in the morning whereas I can get controlled walking up the stairs later in the day. Your settle on a mat near the doorway to the stairs is a great idea to change the picture! Thank-you
Thanks Emily! Great video, my boyfriend and I are getting our first puppy, a spanish water dog, soon and I can't wait to start practice. Especially the leash pressure game seems like a really effective and fun way to teach a dog how to walk on a leash.
My dog winds up based on words...."Do you want to go.......?" Can't use "bye-byes", "walk", "park", "play" "toy store" or the pig Latin version of those words or phrases. If I get out my purse, collect my keys and coat.....she knows based on my movements what is afoot. She can do any number of tricks, behaviors and is ALWAYS learning more. She is in most cases EXTREMELY obedient but I cannot get her to stop pulling to get to places that she finds really fun. She focuses better if she has had a chance to do an energy dump.
Awe. She’s sounds like she really has a lust for life. You could try walking on a long line so she can go off ahead and then come back or you could encourage sniffing around as you progress to the destination. I know it can be hard. It’s like they want to teleport to the fun. You can also say if your odd to play with a toy at a park play around the car or your front door and periodically along the walk so it’s not just the destination that’s the highlight

Yeah, basically dogs wish they could teleport to where they want to go... They probably feel as stressed and frustrated as we do when we want the internet to be fast or we are watching netflix and it keeps loading instead of playing.

Yes, if you put it down it can help them calm down sniffing looking for it, and also if you put it down it takes more time. so if you were walking forward and marking your dog at you side you can put it down on the ground so you can take steps ahead of your dog too.
Hi, just discovered your videos and subscribed. We have a 1.5 year old collie cross who pulls incessantly in 'new' places. Part of this I think is because he spent the first 6 months of his life mostly walking in the local area, and he doesn't pull much around here. However as soon as we want to take him to a new beach or for a hike, he turns into a sled dog! He is not motivated by food or toys on walks, as smells and other dogs are more exciting to him. He completely ignores us. We are really struggling at the moment as we got a dog hoping to have a hiking buddy but all we can do right now is walk him around our local space and then leave him at home the rest of the time. It's worth saying we made the mistake of walking him on a retractable lead for the first year, and now we are trying to train him on a short lead and paying for our mistake. Please do you have any advice for us? We have tried everything including standing still, changing direction, calling him back, etc but he does not let up the pressure and ignores us. my doberman has a very low play drive shes going on 8 years later this year. i have been tryin the kongs an balls that kong like an filling them full of food an trees but its very slow process to get her to care about an ball she will ignore a tug toy. do you have any advice or point me to one of your videos please?
I have a gate I never thought about opening the door but keeping the gate closed. It seems an obvious thing to do now but I didn't think of it. Also, a lot of these training ideas are good for rest days as well as exercise days.
I've worked on settling with my dog, and she's made some great progress. However, now when I put a treat down she won't take it and sit or stand up. I got into the habit of giving her a treat whenever she settled and left to do other things since someone watches her most of the time. Perhaps she's associated that treat with me leaving and become anxious? I'm not so sure, and I'm in a stump. If someone could help that would be great.
I suggest practicing where you are sitting next to the mat and dropping the treat since shes worried about you leaving. What about if you live in a city with no backyard? My 9 month old husky/lab/Aussie mix pulls on the leash outside on walks and especially when we are on the way to "fun" places where he can get his energy out. On the way back from these places (after he's released his energy) he doesn't really pull. We work on training inside and he does perfectly, but when we get outside he acts completely different, gets very frustrated when he can't pull--to the point where he seems manic--and doesn't seem to hear me, and then stops taking treats altogether (toys outside don't work for us)
I suggest just doing stuff in the hall of the apartment like settle and leash games, quiet of course so as not to bother people in their apartments, then when on the street you can practice right in front of your place with a settle and casually sniffing back and forth rather than going to a destination. I have a Labrador retriever I bought it cuz I thought it would be a silent fun and loving family dog But he is the opposite of what I thought he would be. he is in a while other level He is like a Labrador and a rottweiler together he is super duper hyper active He is like a tiger dog pls tell how to calm him down
Im so sorry you are having that issue. It's so sad when someone gets a Lab bred for sport and the dog is chilled out and then one bred to be chill that would do better as a sport dog. They dont have an adjustable front part but fit border collies really well. For escape artist dogs they are not the best because you cant adjust the front and they can back out of them if that's something they do.
Oh I do use balls inside the house but not outside because they can be more unpredictable in how they move when they bounce, so more likely for injury, that being said, throwing a frisbee on a windy day can make a frisbee do really unpredictable things unless the dog knows about wind etc.
Is a 12 week puppy too young to leash train? Mine likes to lie down and not get up to walk and when he does get up and gets a treat he immediately lies down again and won't get up until he gets a treat again. We don't make much progress on our walk and he's too heavy to lift up to carry. We live in an apartment so I have to have him on a leash when outside.
I suggest that you try a longer leash like 10 feet so you can move further away and then squat down and encourage the puppy to come to you using a high pitched voice. Sometimes its hard to teach a puppy to want to move with you if the leash is too short as you are standing next to eachother so it doesnt make sense until you use your movement away from the puppy to encourage them to follow you. Hi! I have a question about working on settle. We have a high energy vizsla, so getting him to settle is tricky. If I have treats he barks and demands them... Which is not settle. Any tricks?
Thank you so much for this. It's exactly what I need. Is it the same approach for scents? Cos my 1-year-old beagle more like sniff than walk lol, especially when he catches a new scent and he wants to follow it. He gets too excited and frantic and starts to pull hard to follow the scent. He forgets to listen to all the cues we learned like attention noise, let's go, or leave it. He loses interest in treats, too, when he becomes this excited. It's harder when it's scent than people or places because I really can't see what he's too excited about and he sometimes goes in circles, back and forth, etc. looking for the trail.
How do you get your dogs so interested in training? Mine loves to run and play but definitely does not leap up for training! I do play with him first - like a short tug game but he definitely does not look like yours do! Thank you for all your videos - wish I had discovered them when my dog was a pup!

Thanks for another interesting video. How do you manage training for pups vs older dogs (if it changes)? Should you focus 100% on a single trick/behavior or do a variety (excluding capturing behaviors). Lastly, do you have any insight on what to do when your pup barks seemingly without reason? They have been fed recently, offered water, given play time and allowed to potty but they still whine/bark for attention. Is this something to train them out of or is it just a pup being a bit excited to hang out?
I suggest with both puppies and adult dogs to work on a variety of different behaviors in training sessions to created variety. If the puppies are barking at you in a pen you can go sit next to the pen and put your hand in the side of the pen, if they are barking at you sitting on the couch, I suggest in that moment, you could work on calmly petting and massaging them, and then work on teaching them to settle on a bed when you watch tv.
