The music we are using is “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral”, which is found in Act II of the German opera “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner. This is an instrumental piece of music. The opera itself is a dramatic and tragic love story, retold within our routine.
Routine Notes:
- We accept the time penalty we will receive, as this is the chosen arrangement of this music that is overtime by about 20 seconds
- Major ignore delay issue at 3:06-3:35
- Loud volume warning approx. 5:40
- Riders halt/ignore/global to make the disappearances a little cleaner
SYNOPSIS OF ORIGINAL STORY
The King of Brabant has come to gather troops for the war against the Hungarians, and also solve the dispute of the murder of the Duke of Brabant, who is a child. The Duke’s caretaker, Telramund accuses Elsa, the Duke’s older sister of murder so that she can become the duchess of Brabant. Telramund wants the King to punish Elsa so that he can become the Duke of Brabant. The King decides that in order to solve this issue, Telramund and Elsa will duel. Elsa elects a Knight from her dreams to battle for her honor. After Elsa prays for her Knight to come, a boat drawn by a swan and golden chain delivers the Knight. The Knight agrees to duel Telramund, but only if she never asks for his name or where he came from. Elsa agrees to the terms and Telramund and the Knight combat. The Knight ends victorious, and he and Elsa celebrate the victory.
Telramund’s wife, Ortrud tells Telramund of her plan to have Elsa make the Knight reveal his identity. The goal is to avenge Telramund’s defeat in his battle against the Knight. Ortrud has a conversation with Elsa, initially begging her to pity her suffering and then sowing doubts into Elsa’s mind about the Knight’s true identity. Ortrud explains that he is from some magical origin. However, Elsa doesn’t buy it and believes her Knight to be of true intention. Meanwhile, the Knight and Telramund are off preparing for their next battles; The Knight to fight the Hungarians, and Telramund to fight with the Knight again in vengeance. Eventually, Elsa enters the church to be wed to the Knight, but Ortrud and Telramund interrupts the procession, continuing to argue against the Knight’s origins. Telramund directly accuses the Knight of magic and demands he reveal his identity in front of the crowd in the cathedral. The crowd grows uneasy, and the Knight and Elsa retreat to their bridal chamber, only to be interrupted again as Elsa attempts to have the Knight reveal his identity.
STORY OF CHOREOGRAPHY:
Character descriptions:
Swan = full white outfit, right side of screen, beginning of routine
Golden chain = yellow outfit
Knight = gray outfit and Ayla horse
Boat = brown outfits, ride side of screen, beginning of routine
Elsa = full white outfit, large white hat, left side of screen, beginning of routine
Telramund = smoky black horse, black outfit, centerline 10m A wall
Ortrud = smoky black horse, black and red outfit, near midline E wall, mid of routine
Extras = white horse, black/red/white outfit, first appears in 5m circle near beginning of routine
Our choreography immediately begins on the Knight’s entrance, on a magical boat pulled by a swan and golden chain. From there, we see the Knight vowing to honor Elsa in this battle against Telramund (Crescent) and declare her innocence. As he is off to combat Telramund, Elsa watches from the side. Telramund loses, and the Knight and Elsa proceed to celebrate the victory through the circle movements. Ortrud and Elsa engage in conversation near E wall, while the Knight prepares to fight off the Hungarians closer to B. Elsa ultimately has the last word, bringing Ortrud to follow her into the procession. Near the B wall, two rider lines represent the Knight’s and Telramund’s respective followers to their battles.
Eventually, all are led to the church for the wedding between the Knight and Elsa. As the procession begins, Telramund and Ortrud attempt to interrupt the wedding (characters rearing), and Elsa and the Knight retreat to their bridal chamber, where Elsa finally relents to ask the Knight of his origin. The scene erupts into disarray as they are interrupted, leaving only the audience to know the Knight’s name is Lohengrin (L).
