I thought she did pretty good! The second time she brought you right by it and you would have seen a deer laying there. She is a sweet dog. Another great video!

Just bought out first tracking dog in January and have been training him the last few months. Using a deer drag and blood and recently started using the interdigital gland from a deer on a handle. I watched all the tracks you and Callie did last year and it was really inspiring. We went to a blood trailing seminar also and watched a few old and new dogs work and learned all kinds of stuff and got a whole folder of notes. Keep the videos coming.

Shane Simpson thanks I appreciate it. We are working on getting on the Arkansas blood trailing network next year. Gonna throw him on some of our friends and family’s deer and test him this year before trying to get on their list of tracker per county.

Shane, Do you ever try dispensing blood along your track with like a medicine dropper? That’s an awesome little trick to change up some training tracks for Callie.
@ShaneSimpsonHunting
@ShaneSimpsonHunting 5 лет назад
I prefer to exclude blood from training.Not only does the blood make it too easy for her but I want her concentrating on tracking deer by their interdigital gland scent.

Great video. Good to know an experienced tracking dog has off days. I have been training my first trailing dog this year. He’s a hound mix we got from an animal rescue. He’s not quite a year old yet. He does pretty good in the yard at 50 yard tracks. Took him yesterday to a new spot and about 100 plus yard track and he did not do as well. Going to keep working him though. I think he will do good.

Hi Shane, I watch all your videos and really enjoy them. I've trained hounds going on over 30 years. She knows whats going on, with pups we lay drags like you just did but we use a 10 to 15 long stick to lay it with. After a while the dog will learn to track you dragging the scent rather than the scent its self. With the long stick you will know if she is on your track or the scent drag. The trick to making a scent hound is repetition, same thing over and over. When you change something she know the difference. I'm sure you know all of this but I just thought I would mention it.

Good idea. I'll give it a try in the off-season. Thanks

@@ShaneSimpsonHunting A 50-100m length of heavy nylon on a hand caster is a method enabling plenty of separation. Using a different breed of dog, I usually simply train them with manners, stop, come, go on etc (& if they've got it they'll listen by 4-5 months, then take them straight on the job. Hunting if possible (they find live ones better than me) & don't let them chase. They get to work domestic deer that are pretty tame & have no hesitation trying to kill a pup, they've got to learn that one themselves, & a prod or 2 makes them caution on trail which is good for the live ones. & I use species name as a command to track, a good one will differentiate. You can selectively hunt pigs, deer, possums etc. Can be a pain, current one is also a stoat dog, and have lost a deer because a stoat is there & I've tuned him to them. Can't tell him off. The long nylon is ok in the bush, I sometimes use it when training on a track to slow them down, can just tread on it & command wait. Don't have to thread the needle all the time. Usually move to silent controls, a winged deer will bugger off if it knows what's best for it & second jump makes them really hard, plus seems to make them harder to kill when you do get a chance. Reds don't wait like the whitetail you have seem to, the baying would have them in the next county if they can move. .

You probably know this by now but I like to take a long stick call the string on to it hold it weigh out to one of your sides that way you know if the dog is following you or the drag mark

I know it's hot out, but it seems that when u tell her find it she tends to stay on the track. Do u talk to her as she is tracking? My dogs the same . She wants the real deal. You should talk to her next time the whole way through tracking here and there and see how she does. Would be interesting if she keeps her head in the game better and doesn't get sidetracked as easy.

Yeah was going to ask u if she picks up ur sent when training because my dog when traing my dog for pheasant he pick up on my sent and then had my friend do a track and through him for a loop had to work a little harder to find it.

dont get discouraged with the training tracks, my catahoula would crush the training tracks. When we did live tracks he would follow the hunters sent on the hard ones take me to treestands,,and everwhere the hunters looked for their deer. Getting him to work out the real track vs the false track the hunters put down was really challenging.

I’m looking forward to the new year. I’m caught up on all your episodes. My last pit bull I had to retire early because when she started winding them she would try that all the time and wouldn’t stay on the track. The golden retriever, the lab and my first and best dog the pit/American bulldog mix would not go another step if they lost the track . That zigzagging and backtracking is what you like to see. Thanks for the awesome content.

Have you noticed that your dog doesn't work as well in the spring and summer compared to fall and winter? My bird dogs seem to hit a wall in the spring where they don't scent very well at all. I'm not sure if it's all the scent (pollen) in the air or what but spring and early summer seem to have bad scent conditions.
@ShaneSimpsonHunting
@ShaneSimpsonHunting 5 лет назад
Not sure if it's season related but she definitely doesn't perform as well on training tracks as she does on real tracks.

@@ShaneSimpsonHunting Do you train during hunting season or because there is so much real tracking do you lay off training until after season? Do you notice the training sessions getting better and better the closer you get to hunting season? I'm with you. I think the dogs can tell a training session from a real one and just don't have the same drive for training as they do a real hunting situation.

It was just hot and dry for her. One thing you can do is re-watch the video and learn from her cues she is giving from when she is on or off the track. Remember last year she was stiff tailed when on, but it looks like she is wagging more while on and straight up while off.....but then again could have been a deer walk thru there she got off on....Look for the cues is the best thing to learn from this one.

I think I'd try to use something MORE ACCURATELY SIMULATING a wounded dear. An old leg is just not fair enough for Callie. Try freezing some blood this year to be used next training season.
@ShaneSimpsonHunting
@ShaneSimpsonHunting 5 лет назад
I don't use blood in her training since I don't want her relying soley on blood to find deer. I think I just need to get her out more and let her enjoy new areas without tracking. I imagine she gets bored just being in the house or yard all of the time.
