Today we are working with a flighty cockatiel in our masterclass. To avoid birds flying all over and avoiding you, you will want to teach a combination of recall training and desensitization to new environments so they're less prone to taking panic flights.

Very true that smaller birds seem to move and react faster than larger birds. Definitely adds a different complexity to trick training

Our Cockatiel Clio does this. We've had her for almost 6 months now and if she is out of her cage, she freaks out. She was in a pet store for a year prior to us getting her. I'm able to put my hand in her cage now without her hissing and posturing but that is about it. The pet store said that they weren't allowed to handle the pets so she never had much interaction until we brought her home. Last week, she allowed me to touch her tail feather after giving her a treat. She is very skittish and not a great flyer. I hope you continue to make videos like this because they are really helpful. Hopefully, I'll get her to step up but as for right now, I just want her to feel comfortable with me

I was super lucky my kak used to love holding my finger, so I started with a 'handshake', and slowly captured the foot in the air. Nowadays she uses the wave to beg if you're holding something she wants, complete with "grabbing" movement and all 😂

I agree that big birds are easier because they move slower. My galah picked it up in a couple minutes. Ive been trying with my 9 year old cockatiel for months. Her step up is so fast its impossible to click before she fully steps up. I will try capturing her when she scratches her head. Shes doing that a lot now that molting season is starting. Thank you!

Hello BirdTricks! I'm having trouble taming a pair of bonded sun conure parrots that are around 6 years old. I bought them about a month ago, but have no progress, even though I tamed a good bunch of parrots in the past, just not 2 that are an older bonded pair. Do you have any suggestions? Thank You!

It's always us lol, maybe video tape your sessions and play them back to see if you can figure out what's going on. That has always helped me.

I love that y’all include smaller birds! I have a blue Indian ringneck male that will be 3yrs old at the end of March. He doesn’t bite but will only step up for me. He will run from everyone else if they ask him to step up. But if they hold one of his favorite toys he will play with the toy and their hand. I had a Quaker before the ringneck and honestly i miss him. I can’t love on and snuggle and pet the ringneck like I could the Quaker. I’ve had a African Congo Gray many years ago and I’ve owned 3 Quakers in the past. I’ve thought about selling my ringneck back to the pet store for them to rehome him because on their adult birds they make sure it’s a good match and have the people come back a few times to make sure they’re right for each other. If not they will suggest a different bird. So I like that idea even if I do lose money that way it’s best for the bird. What is y’all opinions on Ringnecks vs Quakers?

Based on our project bird experience we definitely enjoyed the Quaker more but I think it's just a personal preference and individually bird based as well. The quaker we worked with was 16 years old vs the IRN was young and horrendously clipped. So probably not a fair comparison to one another!

Selling a 3 year old bird? That’s not really a thing. At that point he would be a rescue bird because he’s now a poorly trained adult that someone else would have to undo all of the bad training on. I’m sorry, but it’s true. I have rescues and I prefer them, and I think older birds are easier to deal with, but most people want a brand new baby that they can damage themselves. I do have one rescue that isn’t food motivated at all, and is completely unable to be trained. But I love her and I see the damage her former owners did to her by not being good owners, so I would never ever try to “resell” her. Sorry, not sorry. I really hope you can find a way to love your bird and not give up on him. I’m not trying to shame you, but the reality is that the rescues are filled with birds that sometimes have little chance of being adopted. And we humans are the ones who made them difficult to adopt.
