Today we made a couple training mistakes with our young draft filly, Bree, but we are learning from our mistakes so that we can train her the best that we can! Then, Jim & the team of draft horses are headed to the woods to do some logging! We enjoyed having our grandsons with us for the week and they had a lot of fun playing on the farm and helping with the horses.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Adorable photos. Those front steps blend into the bottom stones. I dont think she could see the edges of the steps. I think she was hesitant for the right reasons. The side steps are in the sun, wider and easy to see.

The best thing for little boys is running wild on grandma and grandpa’s farm. 💕Horses have trouble with depth perception but Bree is such a solid-minded filly that she’ll figure it out in no time under Jim’s patient tutelage. BTW, Jim did a great solo job with the camera.

Jim, I saw twice Bree wanting to touch those short steps with her nostrils but the halter rope was kept too short to prevent her. Horses like to reach out and touch things first that their wary of or unfamiliar with. We associate nostrils with smelling but horses use them for touching as well. Just a thought.

Totally enjoyed seeing the grandboy running around and watching Grandpa train Bree. It all brought me back to going to my Uncle Andy and Aunt Lizzy's Farm. We were five tow head, blue eye kids that would follow Uncle Andy around as he fed the pigs, chickens, and sheep. He only had one cow and she was milked by hand to feed the calves. Those were the days of swimming in the creek and walking the rows of corn. Thank you for bringing back the memory. Oh ya, and keeping our mouths close while he worked the farm.

The second part of the video had an "old school" feel. Back before Brenda came on full time and you would do all the filming yourself 😊. I love what you do with your horses, dont take what haters say too much to heart. There are people who will have a negative opinion about just about anything these days. That is a right they have, but its also everyones right to ignore them.

The front steps are in shadow and the side steps are in the sun. If you've ever tried to load a horse into a dark trailer, you probably know that sometimes the best thing you can do is open the front door so the light shines in. Sometimes they will jump right on once you open that door. You know that the stories are going to go down through the generations about Grandpa Jim who used to take his horses up onto the porch, right? 😃 I didn't realize you had a grandson named after you. Very cool! So given that you've bred Lady back, and you are still short a horse, will you break Duke and Earl in this fall and put them in the rotation so Baron doesn't have to work in the woods every day? Seems like it will be hard to keep up your logging schedule without another horse. So many dangers in the woods. I'm glad that log didn't get your camera. I enjoy Brenda's perspective and camera work, but I enjoy yours too.

I love watching you train your horses. I never find it boring at all. As far as horse pulling goes...I watch them carefully and it is evident to me that they want to pull for you. They would try almost anything if you asked them too. It is remarkable to me how calm they are when at competition. The other horses are so anxious just before they pull. The evener gets dropped and off they go. Your horses just wait until you say go. I have said this to you often when I post. It is evident how much they trust and love you.

Jim, seems to me that you are an extraordinary teamster and trainer and friend of and to horses. Over and over again I am awed how your team finesses positioning wagons/carts to get it just where they need to be to get the job done. Most of this is done with blinders on AND going backwards. WOW ! Regarding your selfie video making, your are great at that as well. There is A LOT of leg work with the camera ie, walking ahead setting up the camera, walking all the way back then driving the team towards the camera than walking back to retrieve the camera. You have done this several times this time. That is a lot of work to make an interesting show. I love watching you and yours at the horse pull. I do like all things about Working Horses with Jim

Hello Jim, Brenda, and family: I can't put into words how much I enjoyed this video. For me, since I'm crazy about horses, there was nothing boring in your video. And to me, your video wasn't too long at all. Jim, I didn't see any mistakes in how you train Bree. Really liked that you took your time with Bree, and reassured her that everything was and would be okay. If I may, I'd also like to stick up for you both, regarding your horses. Anyone can see that you love your horses and care about them. You're never rough with your horses, and you're never mean and impatient. Everyone complaining out in You Tube land needs to rewatch this video and reassess their opinions about how you raise, train, and handle your horses. Shame on the complainers, too! The complaining people in You Tube land need to seriously stop complaining at you and they should stop complaining how you work your horses. I don't see any indications that you both work your horses too hard. On the contrary, you're both very kind, gentle, and generous in the amount of time you work your horses and you're very kind about not working your horses too hard. You both have my highest good opinion of you, and I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work on the horses and within your farm. You both do an excellent job in all of those things, and I'm not ashamed of sticking up for you to the You Tube land complainers! I look forward to all your videos. Great job on everything, and God bless to you, your family, and to your horses and other animals! :)

Horse pulls n plowing showcased the capabilities and temperment of these beautiful animals. I learned so much about hitching for even and well leveraged pulls, and the how and why of turning a good furrow at those matches. Keeping alive those skills for the farmers stood them in good stead when tough times and war rationing made them park their trucks and tractors. There may come a time when those skills will be needed again, so folks need to pay attention.

I have been around horses a lot in my lifetime and everyone makes mistakes that how we learn and it is also how animals learn too. There are lots of things that can go wrong when training horses they are super smart animals and they know how to use their weight when it comes to something that they do not feel comfortable doing or if something scares them they will plow through you without question to get away from the thing that is scary to them. Watching Bree the last couple of months, she is coming along nicely, and when it comes to trusting you Jim, i think she trusts you more than you give her credit for. right from the very start she has learned to leave her mother for a time and when you take her mother she is learning there also that she can trust you to bring her back safe and sound. Watching you interact with your horses i know those animals are well taken care of and they literally trust you with their lives right down to the young colts who haven't had as much training as Baron has but they are also younger than Barn too. I have never seen such trust in you and your ability to be the team leader in what they do. When you and your horses are in the woods they trust you without question. in the woods can be very dangerous because of bears, coyotes, wolves and such, lurking around, this could end badly for the horses, but they trust you to look after them i think they would even protect you as part of their herd. I used to think the horses were put under a lot of stress going to take part in horse pulls, but i have had a change of heart on the subject. some people are in it for the money the prestige but i know you do quit your horses when you feel they have had enough. You do that when your in the woods too all day. when they go up hills with a load you stop your horses so they can take a rest stop before continuing. there are some jerks in things like competitions but the ones you go too the owners of the other competitors have a comradery and they also know when their horses have had enough too this is something not all horse owners have and will push their horses so hard that they break down and then ship them off to a horse auction and put into a truck heading for slaughter. that to me is unacceptable horse ownership. a lot of people have no horse sense what so ever. You have the best kind Jim you look after your horses well without treats and you give them days off when you have most of the chores done on the farm or in the woods and helping Abby with her house so i do not have a problem with horse pulls. Like all sports there are jerks and then there are true horse man and you sir are a true horseman. God bless you. Hi Brenda i hope you enjoyed your grandsons they are going back to school soon so we wont be able to spend as much time with them, before we know it they are graduating high school and off to college or University. I have two beautiful grand Daughters and as much as they run me raged i love every moment i spend with them, time is precious. I hope you and your family are doing well say hi to Abby and Trudy, I hope we get to see her before she also has to go back to school with the little ones again. God bless you both its always great to see you both.

I always found that leading them up a step first. Before asking them to step off really worked well. Maybe too well. Had one Gilly climb the two flights of stairs to our apartment over our business! I put a horse proof latch on the gate after that.

Hello Jim, When I lived in Alaska, I went to see the start of the Iditarod in Wasilla. The dogs were barking with so much excitement. They are bred for this activity just as your horses are bred for logging. You did a good job explaining, but you can’t get through to people who do not understand and do not want to explore the history of draft horses being bred for this task. If you were hurting the horses in any way, I would be the first to object.

The step drill I've seen done with railroad ties; foot control drills make getting in and out of the horse trailer far easier.

I'm enjoying your videos very much. Seeing the Maple logs reminded me of our trip to Sebring, Florida this past January. We visited Highlands Hammock State Park. Deep in this very lush forest I was very surprised to see Red, or what we sometimes call here, soft maple growing happily standing along with Bald Cypress in two feet of water year round. I guess that is why they are sometimes called swamp maples. Also I have two 12 inch Bald Cypress in my back yard here in Western N.Y. that I planted. There is another much larger Cypress in our town. Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos.

It seems to me that Bree was leery of stepping on that paving even when coming from the other side. For some reason that seems to be creepy for her, and perhaps the dark colour of the steps means she can't gauge their depth (or even where their edges are?) well enough to feel confident about stepping down onto them from the porch. Kudos once again to Jim for not making an issue of it and forcing her to obey. She'll get there with more of the same gentle handling and guidance.
