These macaques are trained to interact with humans so that they can take part in research experiments. The aim is for them to remain calm during their work. Training takes time and starts in the breeding centre before continuing in the research facility you see here. Learn more at www.labanimalto...

ALL monkeys care about is food. That they give them treats-and keep them in a clean environment is more than enough to keep them happy.

Wow, just because they show us these clean cages and all the room the monkeys have in the preliminary situation, doesn’t distract from what these poor things are put through. They don’t deserve it, and I would hope that humanity has extended that far to not let such atrocities continue.

Larry Shaw They aren't working on cures. They are developing drugs that mask side effects but create more side effects. The animal model is flawed and will not lead to cures for many diseases which develop as results of our unhealthy lifestyle choices

Do they make good pets
@understandinganimalresearch
Apparently not, and monkeys raised and trained for research would certainly not make a good pet. They naturally live as groups and are usually kept in groups in research facilities, another reason why keeping monkeys as pets would be difficult. First time we've been asked that question, thanks!

Love this caging. Thank you and the facility that is willing to be open so that people can see how the animals live and work. I think the public needs to see more of this. It is important for people to know what actually happens in research rather than the distorted and outdated things spread by activist groups.

I notice that the lab and animal care techs in the UK don't wear as much PPE as we do in the US, when working with old world monkeys. Can you share some thoughts on what safety concerns there may or may not be as far as exposures to the animals from human sickness and exposure to humans of potential B virus carrier animals?
@understandinganimalresearch

I'll pass on your question and get back to you
@understandinganimalresearch
@understandinganimalresearch 7 лет назад
I quote, "All the animals in Oxford (and as far as I understand in UK academia) come from a B virus negative colony in the UK. This is why we no longer use visors/ face mask & goggles and are able to have closer contact with the animals."
@Cheriec11
@Cheriec11 7 лет назад
That's really cool. I didn't realise it was possible to be totally sure that an animal or colony was completely free of the virus since there is no real way to test for it in a carrier that is not shedding the virus at the time of testing. Thank you for finding the answer for me. :)

Thank you for this! Glad I watched it. I feel informed now. Informed that when you are brainwashed enough you put content on that you think seems ok. This is because you know much worse and you wouldn’t put that on as good PR. So you put this video on, and anyone with a heart or sense of humanity can see through this. The monkeys look bored , and I expect it cost a fortune for those cages, which don’t really compare to being amongst trees with natural lighting and the sights and sounds of the forest. As she said .. the monkeys are so close to humans, imagine a human kept indoors, confined space. I don’t know how they are a good animal model as they must all have depression, . They are there for years ( heart dropped) . Implants in skull never make for a comfortable stint in prison. One day, this will be over and no monkey has to suffer for the over indulgent lifestyles of the human race. The mentally lazy with no intuition or creativity. I send love to all these animals
@understandinganimalresearch

I filmed this. I set out to show the reality, including head implants. As far as I'm aware from filming in around 20 institutions in the UK, animals are well cared for within the constraints of laboratory life. These monkeys are born in captivity and know no other life. I don't belief they have our capacity for reflection and sense of time. I think they live 'in the moment.' Because the great apes, chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans demonstrate some of this capacity, they are no longer used for research in the UK. I do think it important to continue challenging how and why animals are used, and to continue finding new ways of avoiding the use of animals. Currently though, as the creation of the vaccines against COVID demonstrate only too clearly, we rely on research using animals for new medicines.

Suits me fine; I don't want their drugs. Next time you see a TV ad for a drug, pay attention to the end when they rattle off all the possible side effects; some are worse than the reason you're taking the damned drug, in the first place! Primates share a lot of our DNA, but it still isn't close enough for these tests to be good for anything but torture. Search "alternatives to animal testing" to see a number of other options that are available.
@sammyd3577
@sammyd3577 6 лет назад
Cheyanne Riel This is a silly comment. The FDA mandates that every medication be tested first on animals. That leads to the fallacious belief that we couldn't have made it possible any other way. Microdosing in human volunteers is far more accurate and safe. The animal model is awful. I'm sick of my tax dollars being wasted to fund this archaic and cruel pseudoscience
@PuristicRaver
@PuristicRaver 6 лет назад
You seem to have no idea about animal research and the other you are mentioning. Microdosing maybe tells you something about the drug but most of the time nothing about any therapeutic effects. Actually there is no way of testing an drug w/o animal research (but everyone, including the researchers wants an alternative). Thats just bullshit. And yeah it is definitely necessary to find an alternative....but stop argument with no background knowledge about a topic that needs a highly specific education...thats just annoying...
@sammyd3577
@sammyd3577 6 лет назад
The continued use of the animal model in biomedical research despite all it's flaws, new technology available, and outcry from so many respected doctors and researchers that admit it has no real value, is disgusting. It has become nothing more than a tradition that you are afraid to abandon just because humans are creatures of habit who resist change. Get with the current times and use up to date technology including the human computer model and volunteer human microdosing. Some of us have an interest in accurate science and do not appreciate our tax dollars wasted on nonsense. People think animal testing is about finding cures for disease. It isn't. Much of it is scientists pandering to the NIH for grant money to do bizarre things like hamster cage fights and getting song birds drunk to see if they'll slur their songs. Wake Forest medical spent 8 million on one study along to get monkeys drunk. I'm tired of us paying for these bizarre and cruel and outdated experiments. Move on and use accurate technology.

In the UK the government funds research into finding alternatives to animal models, see www.nc3rs.org.uk/ It is also illegal in the UK to use animals if there is an alternative. Using animals is expensive, so this adds as an additional incentive not to. However, there are many examples where we still need to test products on animals, farm animal vaccines for example, as shown here: labanimaltour.org/pirbright You give examples of basic research that you find questionable. Personally (not a UAR position) I believe that decisions made about funding should be reviewed by panels including lay people.

Why not test on humans they are both living things the only difference is that one has a voice and speak for itself and the animal needs a humans voice so they can be spoken up for. Why don’t you do it on humans huh? Oh I know bc THEY WOULDN’T LIKE IT AND THEY WOULD SCREAM AND CRY TO GET PUT Of THERE. Honestly I believe there is no difference between humans and other LIVING things. A life is a LIFE just because there a difference species than us doesn’t mean there life is a lower value then ours. Just bc we understand each other and have more power shouldn’t mean that there life is a lower value. #stopanimalabuse #animallovesmatter #letthembefree #justiceforanimals

Wild Hours Of Pet's I completely agree. They should test on humans, but you and your family only. If they did that, I would apply for a job at the facility were they were experimenting on you and your family only.
@chrismagee333
@chrismagee333 5 лет назад
A few reasons humans wouldn't be used would be a) test subjects have to have been reared in a completely clean lab environment - I'm guessing none of us are that clean b) around half of experiments are the breeding of mice to study their genes - we'd need a time machine and also turn you into a mouse and c) the Nazis kind of did that, leading to the Nuremburg Code and all dat noize. However, within the narrow confines of your understanding, humans are actually used. They are called 'clinical trials' and hundreds of thousands of people take part in them every year. I'm doing one this year. Will you join me or are you too busy shouting from the sidelines?

Hello, I filmed these videos. The monkeys don't have life of 'incredible torture.' If you look through the videos from this facility in Oxford University you can see the monkeys are usually interested in my presence but not upset by it. If they were tortured they would be showing signs of stress, huddled in a corner, etc. These monkeys are bred for research in the UK and if released into the wild (in Africa) would not know how to live and would starve.
