She makes a sharp, long screech especially for food, and then twitters and warbles when eating. Cute.

Are you not supposed to feed raptors with your hand? I think at that age it should be capable of feeding with food on the ground. On the other hand, I know owls do imprint and react differently than hawks/falcons, used to have a GHO which was sweet, adm did manage to catch a few rats in the park.

Yer that’s true you are not supposed to feed hawks and falcons by hand, but I always feed owls by hand, it just makes a really strong bond when flying them

I never knew baby owls are so vocal. She has a lot to say. 😂

Damn that owl is noisy. A very beautiful screech but way to vocal. That is the down side of imprinting. You get a very noisy bird. Honestly I thought that only the red tailed hawk made that type of screech. You learn something new every day. Owls are amongst my favorite birds. I am hoping to get into falconry one day and would love to have one. Though I would likely have a great horned, or maybe a saw-whet if I want something smaller. I could also go for a barn owl. Their plumage is my favorite of the owls, even though their face is nightmare fuel. It would really depend on what I would want to hunt with them and what kind of environment I would do the hunting in. I may even end up with a Harris hawk or peregrine falcon if I can not find good hunting places for owls near me. Honestly I am not that picky on what bird I get. A long as it is a good experience for both me and the bird, any bird would do. Will have to do a lot of research before choosing and I only want to get one bird. I do not think I would want a "starter" bird that eventually gets neglected once I get a preferred one. I would rather choose a bird and stick with it.

I've never done an imprint, so grain of salt, but from everything I've read you should be able to mostly or completely prevent the food screaming (at least with falcons, accipiters, and buteos) if you're just diligent with NOT hand feeding them. ...or letting them see you with food at all. Use a towel and tongs before they're able to rip meat and once they're able to feed themselves, bring them to the pre-prepared meat waiting in another room. They should never see you as the source of food. Food should just be something that's randomly there (and ideally something that's randomly there when you're not there). I've seen quiet imprints. They do exist. If you're worried about getting a starter bird just because you would eventually move on to something bigger and better, couldn't you just trap an RT and release it after a season? ...Or are you not in the US?

I was going to click away, but then noticed you hand feeding the bird and suddenly got really curious. "Wait. Do they have some sort of magic to prevent food screaming?" Nope. No they don't. It's apparently just as much of a cardinal sin with owls as it is with falcons and accipiters. At least it didn't seem to be as deafeningly loud as some falcons. Are you going to have to remove vocal cords or does it go away with enough hunting with owls?

My husband and I would love to become falconers as we both have a huge love for owls! I love how she is in her own way saying "Hello human! I love you!" Camera guy: You're not supposed to be in there. Owl: What's yours is mine human!

@@Hawk-riders They really are! I live in Michigan and we have 11 different kinds of owls all over the state. The most common to my area of the state though are the Great Horned, the Eastern Screech, and the Barn Owl, which my husband particularly loves due to their heart shaped face.

Years late, but how did you handle when she reached sexual maturity? Does she try to court one of her handlers, or attack "rival" humans? Trying to understand how one deals with these issues in owls specifically.
