Just two days ago my bird died ... it was the worst day ever that same day my mom got me a new bird to cheer me up . Then yesterday at my Saturday class I broke down and cried cuz I miss my bird at my teacher just yelled at me I felt like punching someone

Really detailed video about training, thanks! Do you have any advice regarding toilet training a bird? For e.g when taking them out for interaction, I'm able to hold them over a dustbin getting them to poop, or perhaps pooping before being taken out of the cage. I keep getting bird poop on my clothes, so I'm hoping to minimise it.

My mums a dog trainer so I grew up training dogs. (I’ve got 7 budgies and an Indian ringneck) everything you’ve explained, minus the words for some things is the exact same, training transfers over to all, and if you apply these methods to any animal it’ll work. When you talked about clicker recognition, in dog training we call it “charging” the item, like with a crate, harness, anything new you want the dog to associate with a good thing. Also dogs are the same when you talk about not everything having to be about food, I’ve found food to be useless in a lot of situations, and one that definitely crosses over to birds, is if they’re scared or aggressive.. food will do nothing in those situations. My dog is pretty well rounded.. maybe loves and licks a little to hard 😂 , but food does hardly anything outside, I only use it in the house, but a ball, omg she’ll do anything for you, she also loves human attention, and that’s her favourite reward, making people happy. I’ve noticed my IRN will take or leave a treat, she much prefers little toys and trinkets or anything to destroy, and even q-tips, that’s why it’s so important you build a bond and know any animal before you start training, you need to know what they love or you’re already setting them up to fail. And a phrase that I’m sure all trainers love is “any error in training is a human error”

*Is it okay to place a bird cage in my room?* I know that you *should* put it in the living room but the thing is it's really close to my kitchen. There is also not a lot going on, we usually are down there for watching loud movies, eating, or bumping up music. Most of my time is spent in my room. What are the pros and cons of I put it in my room?

If anythings stupid it would be the bird trainer calling the bird stupid because they're not taking the time to make sure the bird understands and putting themselves in the birds position

I am getting my first bird this Friday, August 11, 2017, a cockatiel. I have been watching A LOT of video's and reading articles to learn all I can about them. You are by far the BEST person to learn from. Where did you get all this knowledge on birds and how to train them? You are amazing! How often do you make video's? I would love to keep up with you. I saw one video where you were teaching your bird to play basketball. Can I ask where you purchased the cute little orange ball? Lastly, do you have a name other than Flock-Talk.

My parakeet is used to my hand but won't step up unless I slide my finger underneath his feet. What do I do to get him to step up without me having to slide my finger underneath his feet?

Hi I am not sure if your reading this but I have two parakeets and I cant get them out of their cage and I don't want to grab them with a rag because that just makes them fear me and when ever I do this they will fly to the top of the cage because they are not together. Also, I will leave the cage door open and they won't fly out naturally and they learn to trust me best when the are out of their cage. I would love if you could tell me what to do so I can get them out so they can learn to trust me better. -Grace

Hi im sorta curious Cuz My pet parrotlet likes branches/natural porches So i put treats to on the branch then he climbs up on it to get the treat Should I continue this practice or should i stop? (My parrotlet is new) Also..... i cant place my bird inside my house Where should i train it? Just today Feb 13 2019 My bird let me get near it with a treat And the i kept doing that and then i tried it without a treat It let me get really close to it Why does my bird suprise me quickly It went out of its cage with a porch that im holding And now it let me really close to it. Am i suppose to be worried?

Would a pen work for the clicking?

Hi! I have 8 parakeets! ❤️ they all fly to my hand and land on hand and eat when I have Millet in hand. A couple will step up when I have millet ready immediately! Only one will step up on my finger without millet. Trying to figure out how to get them to come without the millet? Should I restart and do target training?

Is it hard to get wet bird poo out of the carpet? If so, is there a product you can by?

My Parrotlet didn’t like hands but loves to sit on my shoulder. He prefers to walk up on my shoulder from his cage than me picking him up. He is a very friendly but he doesn’t like to take food from my fingers. I have given him millet as a easy snack by putting a stalk of millet in his cage. Now he is addicted to having millet; should I let him have millet whenever he wants or save it for training?

I really need help on this, as I am thinking of getting a budgie as I have been researching for two years now. The only problem is, that I don't know which order I should do the training tutorials in (what to start on). I was thing to start on step up, but as I have seen that target training is the base trick, I'm not sure whether to start on target training or step up. Hi I enjoy watching you so young and knowledgeable , I have a parolette who follows me all over the house but only steps up with a stick and eventually goes up my arm without noticing but she is so afraid of human hands but not my feet she loves to climb and play amd bite my toes

Love your video's! I just adopted a 9 month old Quaker. He is pretty well behaved, but definitely needs to learn to come off a shoulder without biting. Do you have a video or recommendations on that topic? In regards to the target training after I did some clicker training, I moved to the target training and found that when I brought out the little stick (very similar to the one in your video) my bird takes off and flies away. He just seems to be scared of it. Then randomly today, I had a small paint brush out and he came and grabbed it. I think I just found my 'target' stick that I can use for training. :)

HI. Thank you for all of these great videos. I've started target training my cockatiel and have a question for you. The first trick he learned was the spin (as you had in a video). He got it down pretty quickly, and I'm now working on getting him to spin just with my gesture rather than following the stick. BUT what do you do if after a while of training he does the trick without your asking him to? Should you reward him for doing the action or not reward him so that he knows you only want him to do it when asked? Thank you again. and any advice is helpful!

You seem so good at taking care of your birds! Could I please request a video on how to make a bird like being pet? My green cheek conure trusts me enough to sit on my hand but he won’t let me pet him :( Whenever I move my finger closer to his head, he fly away, try to bite me (but not too hard) or steps up on it. His previous owner told me he wasn’t completely tame and hadn’t been handled very much and I really wish to change that. Any tips will be appreciated! :)

@Flock-Talk I just started my tiel on target training and she *loves* it. She's very young, 4 months, and I don't want to push her too fast. Once I start wanting to introduce other trainings how do I get her to associate the verbal commands with the behavior and how long before I should start that?

If your bird is not trained at all ,when I start to train , I don’t really want to clip their wings , so what should I do to start and how would I get them get them to go back in their cage? I hope someone sees this and offer some help.

Hello hello!I know you posted this video a while back, but I hope you see this regardless. I've recently gotten my first bird, a young budgerigar, who is roughly three months old. He (possibly she, they're ablino so I can't tell without a test. I just assume they're a male because he chirps, and female budgies tend to have a reputation of being quieter) has a very mellow temperament and is okay with me reaching into the cage, but backs away when I get close to him, which is to be expected from a new bird that has never had any physical contact with a human. He's uncomfortable with my hand near him, but doesn't fly away unless were to I force him off the perch with my hand, and doesn't show any signs of aggression. I want to begin training, since he's settled into his new home well, so I plan on beginning hand feeding him to get him more comfortable with my hand being near him rather than just in his cage. Do you have any tips about this? I'm not too worried about going through the hand-taming process, as, while it's time consuming, it's not necessarily hard, especially with a mellow bird such as Camille, (my bird). It'll just take a bit of trust, time, and effort, but having another opinion is never a bad thing. If anyone else wants to reply with tips, feel free to do so as well! Any information is helpful.

is it harder to train two budgies than one and is it still possible. should they be separated so easier

I just got a new budgie and I've tried feeding it fruits, dried fruits, sunflower seeds, etc. but it will only eat the pet store seeds. Any advice?

I have two male budgies but whenever I try to get one of them used to perching on a stick, they get distracted by each other. The yellow one keeps wanting to be near the green one. How should I train them in this case? They will get on the stick and my finger occasionally but sometimes doesn't want the treat. I have to push under their feet to get them to step up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 😊

To the people asking about if you can use a pen instead of a clicker, yes you can I clicked trained my cat with a pen and a chopstick (for targeting) but an actual clicker is probably better. To answer your question yes but it's probably best as a temporary solution as you can't fit it in your hand as well and if you use a click pen around your pet then they will think it's training time or expect a treat!

How do you keep the bird from forgetting the trick within the day without tiring Them out? What can I do to make them not forget?

I need help :( I have had my birds for 2 years and I was trying to train them I trained them 3 times a day for an hour and they would always puff up and fly away from me is there anything that I can do so that they can like me again they are not tamed and I would get so sad each day because they wouldn't listen to me and now I think they hate me :( Would they like me again if I followed this

I bought 2 parakeets off of craigslist. I took the to a bird store to buy them a new cage and set up. They cut their nails and trimmed their wings. I had the intention of letting them grow back. Anyhow it will be 3 weeks tomorrow since I had them and Taz wing on both side grew back, but Sunshine only grew back on one side. He keep falling to the bottom of the cage. Could it be because his weeks are uneven. Please help. I don't know anyone who knows about birds. The store I went to yelled at me because I was not going to keep their wings clipped.

okay, so, can someone help? I have a two year old Australian budgie, I've had him for ever a year and a half. I git him when he was two months old. he's seen the death of two other cage mates due to medical conditions that couldn't have been prevented (many vet visits later) and I can handle him. he'll sit on my finger and everything, he's not afraid of me at all. he gets a large amount of my attention and toys when I'm not home and his cage is almost always open, however. he will never stay with me or so me to me, nor eat a treat out if my hand. he also hates vegetables and fruit. Ive given him full salads to chose what he does and doesn't like, and he wouldn't touch any if it. but his cage mates had. so I'm forced to give him supplements and mineral blocks, he will never take food from me and will always fly back to his cage if I go to walk away with him on my hand. how can I fix this?
