Tip for anyone looking to make stilts is to have a grip surface on the bottom of the feet. Wood is typically slippery on most floors, I know some people use the textured EVA Foam mats and rubber shoe soles to add grip to the bottom of the feet and protects convention/home floors from damage.
You could totally use some bicycle tires with epoxy on your base to reduce friction. Nice D.I.Y. tho * notices that video was posted almost 6 years ago *
Very cool. These videos are helpful. Curious about something though. I have seen other digigrade stilts where they extend the "foot" portion and attach bungies at the tip of the "heel" to have an Achilles tendon-like mechanic. You have something similar with the cords at the sides that seem to restrict how straight you can make your legs/ankles. Have you tried the bungie "Achilles tendon" mechanic before, and if yes, why did you opt not to use it here? Thanks!
+Yrrek N Yes, the parachute cords on the sides pull up the back of the heel when you straighten your knee and lean forward slightly, as if your ankles were as strong as a kangaroo. The benefit of the cords is that when you lift your knees high, they go slack and allow you to bend your ankle as you choose until you start to step down again. Springs/bungies keep your ankle extended all the way when you lift your feet, so they would have less life-like motion. But we found they are very tiring without springs, so it is a trade-off.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how painful are they to wear? 1 being: I have no problems with them hurting! And 10 being: If I don't escape these immediately, I'll just keel over and die.
I've seen people talk about similar stilts. It takes a break in. Its gonna hurt like crazy for awhile but it gets better. And apparently if you've been wearing heels for quite sometime its easier.
I almost jumped the gun and asked if there was a tutorial on making these stilts......but damn.....those look so uncomfortable, there's no artificial tendon, and I am not a ballerina.....I couldn't walk on my tip toes for hours...so I think I will pass on this build
