Thank you to Mel for setting up this Bush Walk tour in Melbourne, Australia for us! Check her out at www.worksforbir....
This was our first ever bush walk in Australia and we loved it. Thank you to those patrons and fans that came out to join us! It was so much fun meeting all of you!
Of course Dave had to take a moment to joke about trying to train the wild sulpher crested cockatoos... so then I actually wanted to give it a go! The sound of the clicker definitely startled them but some were braver than others! Hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes look at our fun times in Oz!

I love this video. I see flocks of wild cockies in my suburb every day here in Sydney -- but that target training was hilarious. And the tall trees ( mountain ash I think) are spectacular, nothing like those around my way -- what a stunning location. I am always tickled by how goofy cockies look when they run across the ground - like penguins, they are quaint already with their madly crosslegged walk, but that lurching hop-skippety-jump like a wind-up toy when they put on the pace (like some are doing in the background), is hilarious.

Sorry for asking a serious question but as a regular viewer of your videos and as an owner of a Sulfur Crested Cockatoo I am deeply concerned at the wildfires raging across your country. My question is this, In the face of an approaching wildfire, do Parrots abandon their territory in order to flee to safety or do they stick around and perish?. I look at this video and I cant help but feel sorrow at the colossal amount of bird habitat that has been so tragically lost.

In Australia, bush fires are a natural part of forest progression. Most native trees will thrive even more after a bush fire, so the birds, and most other wildlife, learned thousands of years ago to "go with the flow" and migrate around the fires. Sadly the "environmentalists" got involved some years ago, and whined and cried to stop the fire brigade from doing small controlled "back burns" to clear out the underbrush and dead plant matter, which is why we now see these devastating fires consuming hundreds of hectares of forest.
@CassandraHanley
@CassandraHanley 4 года назад
many of our cockatoos rely on natural hollows in trees to nest. Unfortunately, hollows that are deep enough for larger species can take many decades to form and are rarely found in "healthy" trees... so in the long run, the damage done to large gums is probably helpful to future generations. Many of our cockatoos ( sulfur crested, galahs, corellas etc) are also very comfortable in urban areas, and you can find large populations of these species in areas well away from the fires and in town. ( some are much more shy like the blacks... but they too do move across very large areas, we usually hear them instead of seeing them!) Our cockatoos fly a long way pretty regularly and they will be ok in these disasters...... its the slower moving animals like koalas, wombats and possums that are really at risk in this situation.

Hi guys, lovely video and nice to see you interacting with the locals here in Australia ☺️ I just wanted to say, more for the viewers than you guys, that feeding wild birds here is discouraged. It’s not something I was aware of when we moved here and I’m not sure it’s a message that is spread widely. Whilst not illegal, continued feeding can cause issues for the birds’ health and natural behaviour, and can have wider implications on the environment too. It’s a fairly long standing issue and, whilst it’s fun, it can cause long term problems. There’s quite a bit of info on government websites if anyone is interested. I don’t want to put a downer on your lovely video, but just wanted to let people know. It’s fairly common to see people feeding wild birds, especially the sulphur crested cockatoo, but the damage it can cause is enough that I felt the need to pass this info on, for the love of the birds. ☺️ 💗 x

I loved seeing their highly playful nature in the wild. They would slam not to gracefully into a tree, hang by a toe from a branch, and bite the branch they were hanging from off and fall into the air and scream and soar away. They were so entertaining to watch and enjoy! Once something fell from a tree and hit one cockatoo in the tail, but that cockatoo assumed it was another cockatoo that was too close and a whole spell broke out over it!

So I'm like an animal-whisperer. I go to people's houses and their cat sits on my lap over theirs. I'll turn your vicious guard dog into my best friend in a few minutes. I can read and reciprocate body language automatically with almost any pet you have... except birds. Birds lie! My mom has a cockatoo and that she HATES me lol. If she just hated me and tried to keep me out of her space, I could understand that. This bird though, she baits me in. She doesn't just want me away from her, she wants to hurt me. She will give so many positive signs, she'll mimic me, talk to me, hold her claw out for me to let her perch... she even lets me pet/prune her and seems to be into it. She's just lulling me into complacency though. This evil bird will wait until my guard is down then go all out on me! It's the weirdest thing. I feel like we are making good progress, she's sitting on my arm and I'm petting her, her eyes are closed feathers ruffled... she seems into it. Out of nowhere, she just latches onto my arm though. It seems like more of a show of dominance if I had to guess. I crashed on my mom's couch a couple of days on leave from the navy and I woke up and she was perched on top of me when I woke up, not attacking... just staring creepily at me. I can't figure it out. Any idea what that means?

psmitty840 hmm that one is tough, birds are very different from dogs and cats ESPECIALLY cockatoos, I don’t trust cockatoos lol. The only things I can think of are you maybe hitting a pin feather, or the bird’s energy or hormone level, like how a child will randomly get bursts of energy and just start running around. It could also be something you did a while ago that the bird has just recalled or maybe someone moved fast somewhere else, to me it sounds like the cockatoo really likes you, keep trying! Sometimes my bird will bite when he feels he’s done getting cuddles and wants to do something else, the little guy doesn’t know his own strength

Hope you're enjoying Victoria! I assume you've made your way to the Otways as a bird lover. Have you managed to come across a flock of Rosellas yet? If you want to impress the Aussie's, try taming a magpie haha.

A family friend of ours has a cockatoo who she’s had for a very long time, not sure how long she’s had her at the time but ever since she adopted Flint...Everyone thought she was a *he*.....Until *she* laid an egg after their vacation 😂😂

as a kid it was a family tradition to catch puffing billy to belgrave with your feet hanging out of the old train. once there, we'd go to Sherbrooke forest and whilst wearing raincoats, my Pa would place bird seeds on your hooded head, shoulders, and hands. then several Rosella's would flock to you and eat as you stood still. definitely recommend. if anyone reading this ends up in Melbourne and staying more over south east Melbourne for a couple of days. i'd also recommend going to gumbuya park/world. they have kangaroos, emus, dingoes etc you can get up close with pet and feed (probs not the dingoes). great place to picnic or have a bbq, they also have a couple of rides. beside it is the water park which is also fun. about an hour from there is phillip island which has some pretty good beaches and you can stay there a couple of nights. its about 2hrs from Melbourne, Belgraves about 40 from Melbourne and gumbya world is a bit over an hour so usually recommend if you plan to stay around that area for several days. you can also go to the peninsular its much closer to Melbourne than phillip island, the beaches are alright, great wineries, has hot springs and you can swim with dolphins if you go at the right time of year.

WHY are you trying to train our wild cockies? Please don't, it's stupid, they are never going to experience training again as a wild bird so why bother. Just feed them and enjoy their company.

Funny thing.. I live in Australia and have NEVER seen that many cockatoos in the one place just chilling and usually the ones I see don't like to come ANYWHERE near Hoomans unless ofc they r already trained to.. another thing is , you wanted to see the galas.. I have a flock of em that live in a park right near may house

If you are in a place where cockies, galahs, parrots or rosellas hang out, and you have bird feed, you don't need a clicker. These birds don't have to be shown twice.

When your family members see Galahs they probably think that all Galahs need to say "hello" My friend owns a big Mexican Military macaw and he saw one on the walkway of WDW Animal Kingdom park. He said that all green parrots need to learn how to say hello! That military that plays on the rope over the walkway @WDW learned to say hello to everyone :-)

Unfortunately the cockatoos have driven all the different parrots that used to frequent that park before the council commercialised the bird feeding . Now the big cockies rule the place and there’s not much diversity anymore . At my parents we get wild king parrots that walk in the back door and sit on the kitchen benches

are you going to go up to Corrumbin Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast, the Rainbow Lorikeet feeding is awesome! We did a behind the scenes tour with our six year old twins just recently and got to see lots of the birds in the show up close. It was pretty cool. The free flight bird show is awesome too.

Aloha from the 50th state! I finally bought a bird I bought a cockatiel I went to Australia in 02 I could not believe the amount of beautiful parrots they have there it’s amazing ! I also want to grow my birds feathers out the breeders did trim them because I had a bond with the bird first before he will fly he’s a male he is very bossy of me like if I’m not in that immediate Ariel he’ll scream for me he’s only five months old I gave him a lot of attention I do work part time so he’s alone for about 56 hours a day. I also have two dogs and I live alone so the thought of getting another cockatiel or another bird has crossed my mind I’m interested in a ringnecks ! Can a ring neck and a cockatiel get along?

Curious question, but when is the line between wild and domesticated crossed with these birds? So many people interact and feed wild macaws, cockatoos, and other parrot species on a daily basis, so is there a line?

Why try to train wild cockatoos? What's the point I guess is what I'm curious about. I would just be happy to see them in the wild in their natural habitat.

cool video sulphurs are beautiful birds but can be a bit of a problem with chewing everthing in sight especially when in drought like it is here right now in aus. its that dry here right now weve had yellow tail black cockatoos move into the area im in. they have come to the coast looking for food. if you happen to read this comment please have a look at my video of my red tailed black cockatoo trying to feed dad. have had him for 4 months now & i love him allthough he can be a bit psychotic hes still pretty cool.
