We are at the front of the house today and I am trimming my yews. They are very dependable shrubs and trees in the garden, but even they are having hard time dealing with record breaking heat which we are having right now in Connecticut.

Watching these videos always makes me feel engaged and relaxed. I sense a person that is greatly appreciative of their garden and plants It is a refreshing approach when we can get lost in wanting more , frantically obtaining plants and not being contented with what we have.

I'm so glad you found the plastic problem under Big Joe in time to save him! Beautiful job, Olga! Well done!

It's so nice to see someone from Connecticut. It has been miserable here with the best and humidity.

Agree, we are being promised rain after rain and it never comes, just a few drops… I look forward to fall…

I enjoyed your video.. watched it twice. I love it when you find your kids soccer balls in the garden. And I loved how your son named the Yews. So glad Big Joe caught your attention in time. Hope everybody in Ukraine is still safe.❤️

Yes, I will keep those yew names in my memory. And Big Joe got very lucky! My folks in Ukraine are safe, thank you!

Very hot here in Atlantic Canada too. Over 2 weeks we had temps near to 90f and no rain. My garden is taking it in stride tho. I love your approach to "sharing nature with the birds". I absolutely agree. In fact I think my main reward from gardening is seeing the birds and bees enjoy the fruits of my labour.

Agree, birds and bees are welcomed guests in my garden. And they love to nest in my small shrubs!

Oh my gosh how amazing you posted this video! I hated my yew bush and I was just trying to do this, now I have a video to watch!!

Wonderful! If I ever move to a bigger property, I will do all my base planting with yews and train them into different shapes according to the need. Glad this video will be helpful! Big Joe is doing much better (you will get it, once you watch this video).

Olga, it's possible that the plastic may be part of a moisture barrier that is meant to keep moisture from the foundation of the home. I feel the same as you, try to preserve that gorgeous yew! However, you may wish to check with a contractor to make sure you don't need to replace that plastic with something less intrusive on your beautiful plants. :) As others have said, you bring sunshine into our lives, thank you! You're an inspiration!

Awwww, thank you for your kind words! That plastic was a horrid thing, sitting there for at least 10 years. And, by the way, I do all the maintenance in my garden myself. Occasional bribes will make my kids do the job as well.

Very hot here also in Germany and my yew topiaries and hedges need some trimming now but I don't like to stress them more than they are already with the heatwave. Luckily, temperatures will be slightly lower over the weekend. If your yews are okay, maybe I should trim mine now too. Thanks for sharing😊

I am gathering trees and shrubs to use in my back garden. (I bought a Kolkwitzia!) The only evergreen that really works in my area (5b clay neutral soil) and in shade/part shade is Taxus x media. There is one called "dark spreader" which seems closest to the look of yours, though it's so difficult to tell online. I imagine you are using English yews since you have the climate for it. Would you mind telling me which ones you grow? I admire the way you use them in different parts of your garden and hope to imitate you to the best of my abilities. Thank you so much.

Your Videos are so good! Fertilize lightly with some organic stuff plus watering well, will help Big Joe bounce back. Yews are tough as nails.
@OlgaCarmody

That is exactly what I did: light organic fertilizer, good, deep watering. My Big Joe is looking better already. Should show his progress in my next videos. Thank you for good suggestions!

Hi Olga- I like the yews.. I was watching and thinking… why not make it a lollipop shape?? The yew next to the from door. Just suggesting because it is so huge!!😊
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Год назад
Hm, interesting idea... I don't know if I want to open that space under there, it is not really a nice corner, very dead space there. But thank you for your suggestion, I always say, that a lot of gardening is happening in our heads..

Such a timely video for me! I was wondering if I could prune my yews now gz6b…. We also inherited them with our house, in our front yard. I did prune them in June but thinking they could use another prune. Would you wait until late winter/early spring or do now….they aren’t so bad since I did prune them in June. Thank you! Love your channel 🌱

I would prune them now, there is still time. But if shape is not an issue, I would wait till next summer. Happy gardening!
