A very enjoyable and busy afternoon session at Ealing Broadway station on the Great Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from Great Western Railway, TFL Rail, Heathrow Express and London Underground from the Central line and District Line.
Ealing Broadway station was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1838 and was the only station in the immediate area and as such was simply known as Ealing until 1875 when it was renamed to Ealing Broadway.
In 1879 the District Railway started running their trains along the route and as such meant that a three platform station was built for them which was located north of GWR's station. This soon changed though when a connection between the two stations was completed which meant that the district trains could now serve the GAR station. However this only lasted for 2 years as the service was pulled due to it being uneconomical.
For a then lengthy period of time the station and the line didn't see a great deal of change until the district line went through the stage of being electrified in 1905 when the line from Ealing Common to Harrow was done about 2 years before. This meant that for the first time electric trains were serving the station. The former DR station was then replaced with a more contemporary stone structure in 1910.
Before WW1 kicked off GWR made plans for a whole new line to be built that would be explicitly for freight use only, thus meaning it could bypass the station and wouldn't get in the way of the regular passenger trains. This line would be built between shepherds Bush and Ealing, this would enable the south of London to be connected to the West of London. To allow for even better connections to the rest of the the capitol the central London railway extended their line a short distance to connect to the GWR network which meant that they could now run their trains to Ealing Broadway. The line is now fully under the control of London Underground and is used by the Central Line.
In 1961 the former GWR station was demolished and instead replaced by the station we see today. The new buildings would incorporate shops and a ticket hall, this was completed in 1965. The station entrance now is purely a facade to a large shopping area.
My next station was going to be Acton Mainline but sadly the station was closed so it was London Paddington instead.
