A brilliant afternoon spent at Preston station on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Virgin Trains, Northern, Transpennine Express and freight from DRS.
There is so much to tell about Preston station but I will go straight to the nitty gritty of the history of the place.
The station was first opened in 1838 by the North Union Railway, when the station was opened the line leading North out of the station went through a tunnel and under the West end of Fishergate, the slope leading to the tunnel was so steep that bizarrely the station staff sometimes manually pushed trains up the hill. Yeah I know that idea just seems ludicrous nowadays. By 1846 the station was getting stupidly busy with 6 different lines coming in and out of station carrying bulk freight and passengers from all across the north of the UK, various freight loops were created to send traffic around the station. Mostly coal sidings continued to operate long after the Lancaster Canal had ceased commercial operations.
The stations first expansion came in 1850 when the East Lancashire Line used new platforms managed by the staff from the East Lancaster Railway, they had built their own station entrance and booking office.
The station became insanely busy over the next 30 years where the station was seeing over 150 trains every day, because of the fact that the station was getting hit hard on a daily basis it quickly started falling into disrepair which eventually meant that it had to be rebuilt and in 1880 it was done so. It opened with Severn through platforms and four bay platforms.
Skipping forward to the 1930's the station had been fiddled around with and allowed for terminating trains to turn around at the station without affecting the timetables of every other service. Local trains would stop and long distance trains could pass through without any issue.
So many things have come and gone from this station and I really can't begin to break them all down, the station is steeped in history and if you guys are really keen on that sort of thing you can find so many records.
My next station is Glasgow Central.

Seven through-fare and only Four Bays, must have been huge back then, a serious player. Gorgeous day and the Ladies were singing beautifully, great sounds. 88010 wow, I want one! The 55's were nice to see and hear, some serious workhorses there. That 66 pulling through was no joke. Haha, teleportation aside @ 12:26 - 12:27 awesome film, thanks again! B.P.

@@Tornado922 Yeah, it would be nice to see. I guess Train Sims and Scale Worlds are as close as we will get, next to Pics. A great job putting the vision in my head with your history though, my mind is still kickin'! B.P.

I went to Preston in mid April, it was even better because there was workers so the trains would give 2 and 3 tones every time they passed and it was glorious, enjoy Glasgow, you get quite a few VT’s every hour, CX and TPE come every few hours, try do it around 1700-1930 as you get a few trains and a lot of VT’s come there around that time, then head to the depots after, also don’t forget the scotrail services, there’s more than Edinburgh I believe :D nice video anyway...

As you didn't mention it, I'll stick a plug in for the Preston Dock steam railway, which operates at weekends on a spur from the main station, that serves a tar distillery during the week. The last I heard, they were trying to get access to a purpose-built platform AT Preston, to reduce the car parking needs, and increase footfall at the museum. If I recall, they only need to go another 100 mtrs or so from their present limit.

The real reason you perched at the south end of platform 3 was to get close to the 142's!The 158909 saga was that it was heavily delayed on it's previous journey from Barrow to Manchester Airport due to overcrowding and it was 30 late when I alighted at Oxford Road having squeezed on at Silverdale. It then ran non stop from Piccadilly when it should have made intermediate stops. As a result, it would have probably arrived at the Airport after it's booked departure time for it's next journey and that's why it was late. The overcrowding was between Barrow and Lancaster on it's previous journey!Enjoy Glasgow Central when you go. It's a fabulous station.

I was totally perched down that end of the world for that very reason hahaha, I cant believe how bad the disruption was getting for that service. Hopefully your journey wasn't to bad in the end.

Got a seat at Lancaster thanks. Having had 142's as part of the North West rail scene for close on 35 years, there may be a masochist in me somewhere that actually misses them when they go?

Hi guys another film that encourages you to watch it until the end because of all the extra details that are shared which would not be available on those films without voiceovers and that includes those that make an effort and at least put an overlay caption but as good, film wise, these others are, l very rarely watch them to completion as they are too boring

Some of the London Euston - Glasgow Central or Edinburgh via Birmingham are worked by 221's, either single or in pairs. There is also a weekday Euston - Blackpool North 221 in the evening peak and a couple of daily workings to Shrewsbury via Birmingham. Most Virgin 221's though work from Euston to Chester with some continuing to Holyhead and one to Wrexham.
@gdcraig4wr843
@gdcraig4wr843 5 лет назад
Alan Molyneux and Bangor, also don’t forget that some terminate at Crewe, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Carlisle, Preston, and Lancaster :)

The Virgin Trains 221s mainly work services to and from Chester, Holyhead and other places in the North Wales area where the 390s cannot go to, however, some 221s work Blackpool North services and Glasgow Central services via Birmingham New Street. Hope that explains it.

The X means there is a fault with the coupling on that end of the train and means that it shouldn't connect to another unit with that coupling. Means that the unit can still stay in service until it returns to the depot and is worked on.
