RR, one day after you posted this most excellent video I began a trip to Italy on the Southwest Chief out of Los Angeles, which of course climbs Cajon Pass. That trip to Italy and back was highly unusual in that I did it all by trains and an ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2 out of Brooklyn. Including a two-night stay in Manhattan before sailing, it took 13 days to reach Italy from the time I left my house. Yes, the coffee maker was turned off and checked three times.

You have a good eye for the hobby ! I appreciate your taping trains in their entirety. I handled a 2 mile long train through Tehachapi, when I did work; and, believe me, you appreciate curves to keep speed constant ! The other item is : if you make a set, be prepared to stop.

Two questions: time stamp 4:11: The rail line that is at the right top is that an old line and the twin tracks lower left is that a new line? second question: I have always wondered why there is so many curves in the railroad tracks. ( noticed one in a video today if they had took our the twin "S" curve they could have have a lot of track? I know back in the old days they put the track down where it didn't cost them a lot of work, but modern day track laying that wouldn't be a problem. Thanks for an out standing video. the trains and scenery was out of this world; thanks for the tanks cars. again thanks for an out standing video.

Buying Rights of Way is a pain in the dick, so if railroads can, they'll use the RoW they already have....which all hails from the era where they laid track wherever it was easiest and cheapest.
@feraxks
@feraxks 6 лет назад
The upper line is the Union Pacific right of way. The lower line is the BNSF right of way. Both railroads run along side each other on the western side of the pass. UP also has trackage rights on BNSF (from the SP days), which is why you'll see UP trains on both sets of tracks. The curves are all about the grade. Railroads want to limit the grade as much as possible to make it easier to operate over.

I have always had such admiration for people that watch a video made by someone else's hard work and only offer criticism and complaint. If you are sure you can do better than they, then by all means prove it. Get out from behind the keyboard and get with it but be prepared, for there is always another jackass behind a keyboard prepared to criticize and complain about all your hard work and the time it took you to make your video. Now, back to the video and my thanks and a thumbs up to the maker of the video.

Where's all that lumber going to? Well, since California has a law prohibiting plastic bags in grocery stores, the lumber is going to a factory that makes paper bags for same grocery stores.

did you have to be so close to the track ? it loses perspective, you want to illustrate big, long, move back

You might have the anti shake feature turned on with the editor because every once in a while the video jumps around. Also, when shooting video of trains, it looks better to look further down the train rather than an almost direct look at it. That makes for a dizzying effect and nothing really worth looking at. It looks like you have a decent video camera though.

kenmelrac I do know that UP ran a test train that was 18,000+ feet a couple years ago. Feel free to look it up. Took over over 5-minutes to clear a road crossing at 60-Mph!!!
@edwardmounsey9208

kenmelrac At 60 mph 5 minutes would be about 26,000 feet, 18,000 feet , 3 minutes .
