Look back to a time when electric trains cruised across the Bay Bridge and ferryboats carried commuters by the thousands every hour during the day. These times presented in this two-part DVD documentary production begin in the 1930s and during the WWII era when ship building produced a total of 1400 ships. See rare views the Richmond Shipyard Railway and the growth brought by the war.
See the full story of the Key System built by famous Borax Smith -- and how the fantastic East Bay growth was started by the great electric train system built there.

I rode the Key System trains when I was a student at UC Berkeley in the early 50s. I loved those trains because they were so slow, giving wonderful views of the bay and San Francisco out of their large windows. Another memorable distinction was the odd, seemingly random "dings" one heard. -- charlie johnson, sacramento

If only I could go back in time to relive those times. We've certainly lost a lot over the years in California.

I remember the demise of the key system as a child. The Destruction of a great transit system that was destroyed!

They’re currently demolishing the remnants of the tracks under the maze. Sad to see it go.

The Bay Area should have kept the Key System and upgraded it with AC equipped units and supplemented it within a coordinated BART.

The death rate on the upper deck was very high, much like the Golden Gate Bridge. The Oakland Bay Bridge became much safer after 1958.
