Following the demise of steam in the Midlands, the next generation of traction provided a wealth of interest to rail enthusiasts growing up in the 60s. For someone living in Birmingham the main choice lay between Snow Hill or New Street. Perhaps both for a day? Shown here are a few clips of the sort of entertainment on display at each station during that decade. Firstly at Snow Hill before a short walk down Corporation Street to New Street. Please note that this footage has been transferred directly from silent 8mm cine footage and no sound has been added.

Intrigued by the class 33 at Snow Hill, possibly a test run from the BRCW factory at Smethwick? Great footage of the LMS twins at New Street. Superb film. 👍

ANother fascinating collection of footage, thank you. I'm guessing from the paint damage on the drivers door of the Hymek (D7032) that the door had a tendency to stick - lovely detail point for a modelmaker.

Strangely I noticed the same detail. Only a child myself when this was filmed, I started work on BR in '73.

I can only remember seeing a few green 47's around Saltley In the early to mid 70's..I guess there were so many of them they hung around longer. Great film ❤

D1035 Western Yeoman, D7032 Hymek (unnamed), D1061 Western Envoy (entered traffic on 19.04.1963), D866(?) Zebra, D1000 Western Enterprise in original as-outshopped Desert Sand livery, please note the complete absence of clag on all engines. The youngest engine dates this to 1963 or 1964 and even though by then Snow Hill had been allocated to the BR Midland Region, the GWR heritage is still plain for all to see. As is the LMS heritage at New Street, and the presence of LMS 10000, BR D16/1 (withdrawn in 1963, possibly (?) at the timetable change in September, remained out of traffic until scrapping in 1968) dates this film to the year 1963 only.

Another great set John. One point about livery I noticed, the 47's are all teo tone green. Im sure there were more in plain green, or was that a little later? 👍👍👍

Resented diesels as they ‘killed off’ my beloved steam locos (and they didn’t smell as nice either). Warships looked like pimples but I had to admit, Westerns looked very cool.
