I just don't get the love for Samantha Morton. To mr she's just Samantha Morton in everything she's ever been in. And the other actress with her in this scene, I forget her name. She's lauded as some great beauty. WTF! She's hideous, like a Spitting Image puppet.
This scene literally gave me chills. Her anticipation for the news. Her reaction to the realization that she’s been played. All of it is absolutely magnificent. Then the collapse and realization that she will surely die, and her head would be put on a spike and hung in the Thames for high treason. She would suffer the same fate as Elizabeth’s mother, Anne. I could study this shit all day and not get bored.
Samantha Morton made this role her own. She was brilliant. One is also sympathetic to her character as a tragic heroine of a dirty game between ambitious men of the day. Beautifully done.
It's been more than 20 yrs since this film came out. I still remember this less-than- 2-min scene. Such an excellent performance by Samantha Morton 👍👍👍👏👏👏
The moments before she shouts "traitor" at him - it virtually tore my heart apart, to see such a proud woman crumbling down in the face of her own demise. Outstanding performance, dramatic, yet everything but pathetic.
Hamza Alam Actually I do. You’re the scumbag. I study British too, and it’s my heritage so it’s even more important to me. Read biographies and actual documents. Get out of my face that you know more than me. Lol. Stupid...
this is one of the very best scenes of the film, despite the film's shortcomings, it is saved by great performances from Cate, Samantha Morton, Geoffrey Rush, Clive Owen, Jordi Mollá and Rhys Ifans. The cinematography is great and the costumes are wonderful. Given her limited time exposure here, Samantha Morton steals every scene she's in especially this one. If she was nominated for a Supporting Actress, this scene would have been the one shown in the screens. She's such an underrated actress. Very versatile also. Imelda Staunton, Julie Walters, Gemma Arterton, Rooney Mara, Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Romola Garai are just some of the underrated yet extremely talented actors from different generations in contrast with ScarJo, JLaw and Emma Stone who are yes, talented but just too overrated.
Definitely, it was a dangerous rank to be a queen linked to France, like a malediction: Ann Boleyn who lived several years to the court of the French court, Mary Stuart queen consort of France, and Marie-Antoinette, all beheaded. Does someone want to apply to be the next one...?
Karen Turi She did that gesture because somewhere in her mind, she know that the guy speaking to her would betray her. She tried as hard as she could to remove that thought from her mind, as he was showing to be on her side. So his betrayal came as shocking, but in her head, she knew he would betray her, and she was shock to find out that he did, and that she was foolish enough to trust him.
this makes my heart hurt the look on her face when she realizes she has lost. It's like what Cerasi says in the game of thrones "when you play the game of thrones you either you win or you die there is no middle ground". Elizabeth knew how to play and sadly mary didn't. Both Strong and powerful women. Sadly Elizabeth is the most popular name, not Mary.
That depends on the person. I have always preferred Mary to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was too much her father's daughter. Henry chopped off Anne's head and Elizabeth chopped off Mary Queen of Scots'. Even family wasn't safe, wife one and cousin the other.
Even those who defend her and say she was innocent. She still would have benefited from Queen Bess dying. She knew. She just got played. Don't ever right down your plans.lol
queen mary stuart, queen of scotland & former queen consort of france, cousin too elizabeth and a catholic rival too the throne of england if nothing else... much of this representation is inaccurate, as queen mary willingly went too england too escape the "wrath of the protestant scottish nobles after here fall from the crown", she thought elizabeth was going too help her or provide comfort,,, she did, under "protective custody for some 18years"... queen mary if she was innocent or guilty- most probably wanted some closure & conclusion too her state, after such a long time... it was "ironic that a plot or a coup may have been ochestrated too remove the catholic former queen as a threat too elizabteth, dressed up as treason, she was a "anointed soverign a foreign monarch"... elizabeth would never have allowed her too return too scotland or france, she was determined too "manipulate & charm her", but as for mary, how do you "manipulate & charm, a manipulator & a charmer, they never ever met....possibly for the reason of being each others nemisis"... each one thinking that , they have opportunity over the other, two cunning women...
@@gidzmobug2323 Mary was executed in England. Her remains are in entombed in Westminster Abbey, not far from where Bloody Mary and Elizabeth are entombed.
It surprises me that she was called a traitor , she was Scottish not English, Scotland was a separate country with its own government and ruler , the UK did not exist , she was the deposed ruler of Scotland not an English subject , so how could she be a traitor , She should have been expelled from the country sent into exile , not murdered which she was because the English state had no legal right to put her on trial , under the law at the time she was appointed by god and above laws that are made to govern the common people, they should have exiled her to the new world.
Mary spent nineteen years plotting against Queen Elizabeth and finally gave her consent, in writing, to her assassination. What was Elizabeth supposed to do ?
This is beautifully performed, I would definitely say that Samantha Morton had done justice to Mary, Queen of Scots with this performance, absolutely amazing :)
czarowen What a MAGNIFICENT portrayal! Samantha Morton gave Mary QOS a depth and grace I believe, after many years of historical research and study, the Original lacked. Brava, Madame!
after watching this scene i rushed to find out the actress who plays Mary, Queen of Scott. it was exceptionally stunning the way Morton portrays Mary. Morton should have won the award for this role.
Samantha Morton was brilliant in the role of Mary Queen of Scots. She played the entire movie with regal empathy that leaves the audience breathless! Absolutely stunning performance!
You can see the despair in her face when she realises she had been played. Being shut away from the real world made her out of touch with the scrutiny of what was happening, and she didn’t understand that her life was in the hands of these plotters
my favourite performance so far, look at her expressions by feeling betrayed of the ones she one day trusted of. This took my breath away by watching her flawless und speechless performance as Mary Stuart Queen!... Mir hat sehr gut gefallen ihre Darstellung als Mary Stuart. Hut ab!
I don't understand why Mary is so endearing to people. In Scotland sure she is remembered as an almost tragic figure but her policies and political aspirations for the big prize of the English throne almost tore the county apart with civil war. If she was any other monarch she'd be forgotten like the failure she was.
Because her life was tragic? She was an interesting figure that was given bad cards from the start. I'm pretty sure her ambitions for the England throne isn't what tore Scotland apart. Just because she wasn't successful doesn't mean she deserves to be forgotten.
Good performance, although Mary actually had a French accent, for artistic purposes and the sake of the audience, it makes sense. They will be totally oblivious of her development in France.
lol i thought that was a Scottish accent.. and plus in real life Mary was fluent French due to her childhood and she wrote letter to Elizabeth also in French..
I think the Elizabeth Mini series with Helen Mirren is by far the most accurate depiction of the time. This is entertaining, but there are many, many inaccuracies.
She grew up her first years in Scotland, but was quickly moved to France. Henry 8th was attempting to capture her for marriage with his son. So yes, although born in Scotland, she spent most of her development in France. She had very little understanding of Scottish culture when she came over.
Mary is to be blamed for her downfall bec. she always allowed her emotions to overtake her judgements unlike Elizabeth who sacrificed love for the sake of England
If you have read any history book on Queen Elizabeth I lol, you would know she was veeeery emotional and made a lot of judgements based on emotions. And favoritism of the men she liked lol, whether competent or not.
Nikola Bakich but his son was not catholic wich is the big deal about all this Elizabeth's hate about. So, no mather how we look at it, Elizabeth won in the end bc she really didnt care about his legacy to survive but his religion to stay with her people
+Immagonko Scotland had a clan system of asshole nobles and she was married to a vain halfwit murderer who aimed a pistol at her belly, legit if she actually done it he was an asshole who deserved to die.
MrBoBoTom well in the end mary Stuart's descendants now sit on the British throne. Elizabeth was great but had to pass on her thrown to mary queen of scot's son
Aside from the "I, too can command the wind sir" scene which Cate Blanchett slayed, this is the second best acting scene in the whole film. Samantha Morton stole the show here. This is the Oscar-worthy performances that should be recognized in the supporting categories. Limited screen time and exposure but managed to leave a long lasting impact that will change the course of the film.
Samantha Morton by far is the best portrayal of Mary of Scots. I so love her character and the in-depth showcasing of her emotions stitched with faith. The only flaw is the Scottish accent which the real Mary of Scots did not have. I hope there should a separate Mary Queen of Scots movie/series where Samantha Morton reprises the character again.
Mary Queen of Scots accent. Apparently she spoke the old Scots language. Not Gaelic which was not spoken in the lowlands of Scotland. She continued to speak Scots In France though French would have become the most dominant,as well as other languages. She was not taught English. Although she was told absolutely that she was the rightful Queen of England. She did have a Scottish Governess .And had Scots there at Court. But of course I imagine the Scottish accent may have been overwhelmed by the French Court. I have read that when, not long after she arrived in Edinburgh ,she had her first audience with John Knox . The Protestant preacher who practised Hellfire sermons at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. Of course his rants were directed against her and the Catholic faith. And at one point when he was conducting one of his rants in Holyrood Palace, she burst into tears. She later told one of her inner circle that "thon man made me greet" a very Scottish way of saying 'that man made me cry!' So I imagine she spoke Scots and French. Though she may have spoken French the more fluently because this was the language she loved the most. So all in all I think she had a French accent...but who knows!
Ive seen this movie only once many years ago so I don't remember that much about it but one thing I do remember vividly is Samantha Mortons performance in this scene. What a supremely gifted actress she is, this moment/scene always stuck with me.
Samantha IS an amazing actress, and should have been nominated for supporting actress. They really ought to do reload of Mary, Queen of Scots starring Samantha Morton. And when she shouts "Traitors" that was her defining moment.
Mind you. Before this scene she was probably in her trailer eating a ham samdwich... Yet her acting is so good here, you would think she actually commited a crime.
It’s amazing that they chose Morton to play this role. Besides brilliant acting, she looks and is aged way more accurately to the actual Mary at this point in her life than other portrayals of her in different films. I just wish the filmmakers be more accurate and not have her speak with a Scottish accent. The real Mary would have sounded more like a Frenchwoman speaking English
MILES & MILES BETTER than Saoirse Ronan in Mary Queen of Scots. Morton's performance of Mary is still UNTOUCHED. Same for Cate Blanchett's performance of Elizabeth I versus Margot Robbie's. NO MATCH.
Mary Stuart made a lot of very stupid mistakes, Elizabeth didn't (that's why she lasted so long). This scene is brilliant, and Morton should have won an Oscar for this alone.
I've been digging into my family's history for years and after discovering that Mary Queen of Scots is actually my ancestor I came back to this scene. It hits me so differently now, I'm in tears. I wish things played out differently and that both Mary and Elizabeth lived in peace for each other
@@BiG-JuPO1O1 omg thats so cool!!!! I'm still trying to find more information, fill in the blanks and see if the records I have are legit but it really looks to be true. :)
