Here is the beloved 1864 American Civil War song, "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp! (The Prisoner's Hope)" composed by George F. Root and played on one of our Mira 18 ½ inch Concert Grand console music boxes. This very spirited song was written primarily to encourage the Union Civil War prisoners that hope for them was coming and to not be discouraged. This song remains one of my all time favorites to play on the music box here as well as on the phonographs in my collection. Thanks for stopping in and I hope you enjoy this rendition as much as I do. Here is the entire first verse:
In the prison cell I sit,
Thinking Mother dear, of you,
And our bright and happy home so far away,
And the tears they fill my eyes
Spite of all that I can do,
Though I try to cheer my comrades and be gay.
Tramp, tramp, tramp, the boys are marching,
Cheer up comrades they will come,
And beneath the starry flag
We shall breathe the air again,
Of the free land in our own beloved home.

I am now 68 and have a long memory. I have a great uncle, a young immigrant from Norway, who had joined the Union Army, and was in the All Scandinavian 15th Wisconsin. He was captured in the battle of Chickamauga and ended up in Libby Prison, at Richmond Virginia. He never saw his freedom again. He passed away in the last winter of the war and is buried in the Danville National Cemetery, in Danville Virginia. He was lost for years until I found him. This song reminds me of him. He was only 26.

Hello Ellef. I don't wish to be disrespectful in any way, If my simple knowledge of the Civil War history is wrong, I apologies in this first instance. I am from New Zealand, 60yo, and this tune, I now find out, was 'adopted' by Clarence Herbert Woolston as a religious 'anthem' to 'all the children of the world'. My head is spinning. A tune and song to help uplift the Union soldiers captured and held in (after a quick research) pretty poor conditions and not treated very well (and that's being polite), is quite a contrast to preaching the love of Jesus to children based on Mathew 19:14. From this day forward, I will only think of "Tramp Tramp Tramp" and the hope it may have given to men in a similar situation as your great Uncle. I used Google Maps to find the cemetery that you refer to. There are 3 with the same name, but I looked at the one that runs along Lee Street. A very well maintained place of rest. Hope that is the correct one. Thank you for telling your story. My interest in a music box's has been the biggest eye opener I have had in a long time. A toast to our forebears, may they rest in peace. Reverently, David.

@@David-yo5ws My mothers family was a split family. Her fathers family was from the North and her mothers family was from the South. My Grandmothers family Did not want her to marry my Grandfather, as he was in the Army. In 1923 it was still considered the "Yankee" Army by many Southerners. The feelings died a long death. The Southern half of her family endured bone grinding poverty and hardship in many instances until the start of WW2. They paid their war debts long ago. My Grandfathers family were ranchers and cattlemen and came to Oklahoma before the Civil War from Pennsylvania, but were still considered "Northerners" for many decades . My fathers family same from Norway, and were your everyday Scandinavian workaholics, so it came as a surprise when I found Anders Ellefson , some 155 years after he was lost to family history. He was my Grandfathers uncle. My mothers family came here in the 1600s, and my fathers family not until some 300 years later. My mother was a superb violinist and would often play these Civil War songs on her violin.

@@redr1150r Truly fascinating what you have learned of your family history. No doubt about it, the early pioneers of our past families went through very tough years to get us to where we are today. As we get older, we come to appreciate their hardship. In some ways it is good that we have songs or tunes to listen to from the past, just to remind us and link us to points in time. And the information available to us via the internet can give us a glimpse of what it was like. And the hard work of groups to dress in accurate period clothes and re-enact past battles helps remind the living of the history. I hope that we may live the rest of our lives in a reasonably peace filled world. Thanks Ellef for sharing some of your family inks. I must get my neglected violin out, blow the dust off it and try to play this tune.

@@David-yo5ws Everyone is gone now that was interested in preserving our family history. The younger generations will ask about some small bits of information, but none are really interested in it as a whole story. My great grandfather was born in 1869 and wasn't married until he was 40, so it threw of the traditional way of figuring generations a little. It was his uncle that came to America and died as a prisoner.

@@redr1150r Been meaning to get back to you. I don't have any family myself. I have a twin sister with 3 children and elder brother with 4 children and 7 grandchildren. I brought an Epson V550 photo scanner that also scans negatives and slides and am slowly digitising all my albums from when I was in the navy and family events. I will also convert all our family archives from my late mother and father. Will put them on USB memory sticks. Wether any of my nephews or nieces are interested, who knows? Like you said, not really interested. We live longer and have family later and there is more focus to get good jobs in the cities. The large family 'model' is gone and people more independent. I have a nice Lenzkirch Mantle Clock made in 1894, which chimes every quarter and hour in my room and ticks the time away. I intend to keep ticking for as long as I can. Take care Ellef.

An astounding sound quality for such an old machine. Seems impossible anything built in 1905 can still sound so good today. Amazing.

I can see where the melody for Ray Steven's "Everything is Beautiful" song comes from. Many recognizable melodies from modern popular songs, came from Civil War era songs.

That song is sung by every Baptist kid in Sunday School; "Jesus Loves the Little Children", they are yellow, black and white they are precious in His sight Jesus loves the little children of the world. This song is usually followed by; "Yes Jesus Loves Me".

"Jesus Loves Me" is the prime example that music theory teachers give for a pentatonic, or whole-tone-scale tune. Chinese traditional music is based on pentatony, which is why if you ask a Chinese person to name a Christian hymn he knows, if he can come up with one it will probably be "Jesus Loves Me", as although it is a Western tune it sounds Chinese.

@kirtley2010 Wherever I can find space! (big smile) Actually, I always stand them carefully on end (like sliced bread) near the music box itself. Storing them inside the music box cabinet is just not efficient enough for me. Finding a specific title can be time consuming as one might expect as I have quite a large collection of these. And just a few of these discs can be pretty hefty as you might expect. Thanks for the comment.

Fresh uploaded 2 days ago and highly frequented, this old Mira disc. This melody was used in the German Democratic Republic for a propaganda song, called "Ami go home", sung by Ernst Busch, a great communist singer and actor (of course in German).
