Trance leads dont need to be layered!
In this video, I'll be showing you how I created the Trance lead for my track "Willingness" which was recently released on Activa's label - Borderline!
In this video I will show you how you can create a big Trance lead with just one layer and some processing. This isnt to say you cant layer your leads its just that they dont alway sneed to be to get a full sound.

After years of producing I ofcourse get better at putting the sounds in their own spectrum so they dont clashes together. But I noticed my tracks loses impact when I put to much together. I think to much eq, compressing, reverb etc. Also realized that sometimes the tracks I spend less time on often get most feedback. I think it was Deamau5 who said. If you think of not relaese it or put it out there because you dont like it. Just do it anyway. There is always people or an audience out there who will like it.

It sounds great man! I always fall into the trap of feeling I need to add more layers to it. And then it spirals out of control and I start from scratch 😂

With all the respect to your expertise and knowledge, I strongly believe this is related with the genre. Your song is Classic Trance. In modern trance ( or trance 2.0 ) I would have second thoughts if we can get away with it.

Well, of course leads don't need to be layered, but it simply might depend on the type of targeted sound complexity. And although your lead sounds great... it isn't really "complex" in meaning of different sound elements brought in by different spectrum in conjunction with individual envelope curves per layer. So I would sum up regarding your title "...DON'T NEED TO BE LAYERED" as follows: It heavily depends on the individual case and the intended sound. One _ c a n _ create great sounds, but even thousand effects can't replace only a few well selected sounds, which are layered bringing in each their very own specific characteristics.

I find if you layer too many leads together the sound loses character and ends up sounding like every other trance lead.

when i listen to old school tracks like nu nrg i belive that is not layered

There was a time when trance leads needed to be layered to make them nice, thick and wide af, because synths back then weren't capable of outputting much complexity. Nowadays, that's not the case. You can output 16 layers using a single vst. The only time you should want to layer a lead (or any sound for that matter) with separate vsts is when you need different sounds combined together.
