I have bike toured all over France. We used to make plans for each day and then we could figure out how many coffees and pastries we could have. So the Col De Madelien was a three pastry and two espresso climb. I understand the food obsession.

Nice work on the tarp. I've used my front wheel at one end, and the bike bars as the opposite end a few times, and that gives plenty of space to pack your gear around the bike and under the tarp. Enjoy the rest of your ride.

Transcambrian Way is definitely on my list. I just did Dartmoor and Exmoor (most of the West Country Way, but diverted to Ilfracombe instead) over the recent heatwave. From one vertically challenged person to another who also questioned water carrying capacity- custom full frame bag with the apidura 3 litre frame bag hydration bladder and another 750ml bottle on my hip pack (plus a water filter- which I didn't need to filter water but ended up using to dump water over me from a tap I found at a church hall).

I've done the Trans Cambrian too, with a stop at the Claerddu Bothy. Such a great route around the reservoirs before you get to the bothy and Teifi Pools Slight advantage of doing this on a Sunday/Monday that the bothy was empty. Great water filtration systems that I've used. Katadyn Befree (with an additional Hydrakpak 1L bottle), or the MSR Trailshot. Both nice portable solutions.

Assuming you have stakes or decent sticks, you can flip your bike over or use a kickstand of some sort then make a shelter by covering the bike, staking out the tarp and sleeping under the cavity made under it. Sort of a makeshift lean to. Cordage can be used to stabilize the bike against wind.

I think it's a 2x3 meters tarp. But you can use 3x4 or 4x4 meters tarp to use with bike and 1 wheel. 3-4x4 meters tarp give you extra space and comfort. But not forget about bugs, this system not have a bug net. Myself using a Chinese light tent, only 1,3 kg. Good luck!

I love the look of packed up gravel bike, but damn it have to be a pig with all this weight up top. Style is over practicality in this case ;) Rear bike rack with paniers looks horible but I can pack up 15kg of stuff and beside the weight - rides super stable. For your water issue, water bottles on forks will add you 0,75l on each and put the load down as well so handling will be slow but a lot better than large bottle up top. Have fun out there :)
@1esk192
@1esk192 Год назад
I know both worlds and absolutely hated having rear panniers. It's way better for me having the weight distributed all over the bike. There is no negative impact whatsoever having some weight a bit up higher, especially when using fork cages and a frame bag. And I still have a super nimble and responsive bike
@matthewb21
@matthewb21 Год назад
@@1esk192 I love them, I have a pair od ortileb panniers on a rear rack and for most of the time I can't tell they are there. Weight distribution is allways important regardle of useing huge undersalde bags od paniers.

Sadly in the U.K. it looks like most waterways and coastline is being pumped full of 💩 deliberately, and wild swimming is becoming unsafe🦠 For water purification on rides, can I suggest ‘WaterToGo’. They do a specific bottle for cyclists, that has an integrated carbon filter and will also filter viruses and bacteria which most filters can’t do. This what I’m using.
