Episode 12 covers the drive on May 21, 2023 via the Cherokee and Chattahoochee National Forests from the Lost Creek Campground in Tennessee to Chatsworth, Georgia. A long drive through the woods.
After my wife died in late 2022 I implemented a long-planned dream of driving coast-to-coast on the TransAmerica Trail. I made the trip in two portions: Nags Head to the Mississippi River in May of 2023, and from the Mississippi River to Port Orford, Oregon in September.
I have tried to provide as realistic a representation of the drive as possible. The sound is what a passenger in my 4Runner would have heard (sorry about the radio selection!). The picture is through the windshield from a GoPro camera mounted to my dashboard. There are no beautiful drone shots from high overhead showing me driving down an isolated road through pretty scenery. There's no music, except for occasional snippets from the 4runner's stereo. I'm not promoting anything - including the TAT, though it doesn't need promoting.
The Trail was a wonderful experience, but it’s also a test of fortitude - of both you and your vehicle. It’s a magnificent country out there, but it will challenge you. If you’re planning such a trip: prepare well, be careful, take your time, and enjoy it!
You may hear me talking to Pokey, the family cat.

Whew, long day. I wonder if Pokey the Heirloom cat is the only act to travel the TAT? He deserves an award.

Bob, another great one, thanks taking us along on your journey. So about your "detour" at the 2:00 mark in your video - I initially took that left, but I encountered some jagged "boulders" going up that hill and kept "lugging" while I was climbing over them in my 3rd Gen 5-speed and felt like I was going to break something due to the angles they presented. I finally lost my confidence, turned tail, and then took the same route you did, and ended up on McFarland Rd. That route was just as enjoyable, but it took me way off course, and I'm still determined to going back to that spot and finish out that section. One thing I'll say about the TN section (at least from Tellico Plains) - it was very jagged, lots of sharp rocks poking out, whereas almost all of the NC sections I've completed have been very nicely maintained packed dirt roads.

Thanks ! Tennessee has several roads that look like they were paved - poorly - at one time but have not been maintained, so erosion has made them into messes. I thought the roads in east Tennessee were the worst of the entire trip.
