People used to have to take elocution classes to learn how to speak this way, so to rag on you for any mistakes seems fairly classist imo. I certainly can't afford a vocal coach or tutor, so I find your videos rather helpful. That said, some vocal coaches who get paid to teach actors how to speak with different accents probably aren't going to be very happy about any free resources floating around like this, so there may be a monetary incentive for trying to bully you off the platform. Please do stick around to spite them!
@@Lona_444 Basically there some people that were giving criticism, some mean poor constructive criticism but criticism regardless, on her older videos. So the next video Vanessa makes is about her teaching how to give proper comment etiquette where basically you can praise/be nice to anyone you want online but don't give bad criticism to random people, specifically to make that person you targeting feel bad. Ex: If a fat girl is wearing pretty cloth, you can comment on how pretty her cloth. You don't have to go out on your way and comment how fat she is. Because as Vannesa said... 1. It's unnecessary because the fat girl knows she's fat, society knows she's fat, nobody benefits when that commenter is telling her fat. 2. That commenter is being mean and a jerk because just wants to hurt that random person, who is easily targeted. It's unhealthy and toxic. Why am I making this deep dive on a random youtube video I stumble. Because like Vanessa, I feel like people online are being jerks to one another more and more. Not all, but some. At the very least, give proper critique where that person can use it and can benefit from it. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
why do I care so much? I don't but Vanessa seems sad when she rants about it and I wanna help. Also because it's fun informing someone and make myself feel good, as egotistical as it seems. At least I use my ego for a good cause, right? Bruh....lol
Native german speaker here! I have to say your 2 videos so far about the transatlantic accent helped me show how "americanized" my speech was and now I notice how I am almost forcing myself to sound american. It's a beatiful accent and for me also some self discovery in my speech pattern. Bitte weiter so!
I am an austrian and I have a californian accent and it sound really annoying and unclear sometimes so I'm trying to sound softer i can relate to your comment a lot.
Very pleased that you mentioned Katherine Hepburn. I liked the way she spoke. As with a pleasing educated accent , I was attracted to the voice of Theda Bara.
Shift everything to the front of your face... best description! Just found your videos-I greatly appreciate seeing a normal person, instead of a linguist, doing this! I’m going to try this while doing customer service-I think more careful pronunciation will help me be less mumble.
i really like the vibes of your videos and your voice is very sweet. and you’re pretty as well! i’m gonna try to learn this accent, i’m from atlanta and people say i sound a little country so this is challenging
Oh thank you so much! Yeah I can imagine ... the base is more of a "neutral" North American accent and I imagine it can be pretty hard to get rid of a native dialect at the same time as trying to adapt a more English sounding pronunciation 😅
i’m very curious- we’re using transatlantic accents for the fall play at my school this year, so if you’re here from the ridge drama club trying to learn this accent heyyy ✨
Heeey! I graduated from (German) highschool 2013 haha, so it's been a while since I saw a school from the inside 😄 If you have any questions or things you would like me to go over in the next video, let me know!
im actually kinda in the same situation as u, i'm a director in a play and the timeline of the script in in 1940's so the actors need to have this kind of accent, but the problem is, we have this malaysian english accent which is not really american or brittish. so it might be kinda hard for us to have this accent tho. wkkwkwkwkw. And the play in in november :')
People are probably rude to you because you do it so well. Best I’ve heard so far. My great aunts spoke with a version of this accent and they were from the South originally. I think what people are missing is that the transatlantic accent was based on a mix of the British and American upper class accents already in existence. So since children often pick up the accent of their parents or closest caregivers. Many of my relatives who were from the American South somehow carried this accent around from their parents. It’s very odd I know because I myself am from the American South and my whole life I’ve been told I sound a bit British. I never understood what people meant until I stumbled on this explanation of accents recently. In other words my relatives were old enough to have been born in a time where almost all (gentleman) in America spoke with a version of this type of accent. I first noticed my great aunt’s accent because while you can learn to say this accent from a script. What is harder to do is to pick up mannerisms and commonly used phrases used by people who speak this way. Here is one: Raiight ,Right. It’s hard to explain but when people who have this accent get in their comfortable stride they say this a lot. Imagine a man in a suit with his hands behind his back who bends down to examine a sculpture. If a person were to remark on the sculpture. During the entire conversation the gentleman would say, “Raigyyyht, Right.” But what’s funny about this phrase is that it’s like a habit or filler phrase I began to notice. So how we would say “like or so” a lot of old timers who speak with this accent say “Right, Right.” It is always spoken in twos and always with an air of a posh gentleman studying a sculpture or a renaissance painting. 🤣✔️.
I love the way people speak in older films. I only just discovered tonight that there’s a name it. Watched one of your vids and subscribed. You do a wonderful job. (:
Thank you for your videos on this accent! I have a project due Friday in my Dialects class where I have to do a monologue in this accent, and hearing it out loud and explained is very helpful!
Hi, a point of interest, a great example of Katherine Hepburn's accent in male version is U.S President Roosevelt 's accent. I enjoy your videos very much. Best Wishes! This video you did three years ago.
V! You are doing a great job! Nothing you should keep apologizing for and don't underrate yourself by saying that you are not qualified for this. You have a talent for that and this is worth way more than any qualification!
I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon your channel. You are so beautiful, talented and one of a kind! Thank you so much for your videos! The content is really helpful!
V! You’re an amazing coach… I first ran into one of your years a few years ago and your coaching was quite helpful…. Just started seeing them again and still as helpful as ever. Was just wondering what/where you were up to today??? Love to some day link up and “go for a chat”
You are soooo awesome, and I’m really having fun learning this with you!!! Thank you so much! I’m so grateful I found you today!! Binging your videos!! 🥰❤️🙌
One observation I’ve made of midatlantic accents, (and even some English RP voices,) is words like “going” are squished into one syllable. It’s pronounced more like “boing” than “go-ing”
i've had a lot of ideas for writing a short science fiction period piece taking place in the late 1910s trying to get a sense of the dialogue that should be used, your vids are helpful. Btw pretty random but has anyone told you kinda share a resemblance with Zendaya? Lol
I know Jim Parsons has a texan accent, but in the big bang theory was he using mostly a transatlantic accent? I wish I could have the Sheldon accent someday
Received Pronunciation! It's considered the "neutral" English, as Great Britain (as in "British) includes Ireland, Scotland and Wales. But most people who learn English as a second language know what you mean by a "British" as opposed to an "American" accent
I'm pretty left leaning and particularily passionate about LGBTQIA issues. I try to educate people on gender outside the binary etc. I have some issues with the far left, such as physical violence against ignorant people (not property), but a lot of them are founded on cancel culture, not giving people time to grow and improve and lack of fact checking, and not the policies themselves.
Good job on the accent really and the R sounds great you're doing it right)(or so it sounds to me at least) I wonder if you're planning to do any German accents or something And most importantly you keep up the good work I just found your channel so I don't know about the past videos but don't let that discourage you
Thank you! Even on my old videos there have been so much more nice and encouraging comments than rude ones, but it's still something I don't want to deal with, if they're critizing something I wasn't going for. Oh if you would be interested in that I will 100% make a video about German accents. I have all much fun doing the accent and want to share that haha
I love following you, but just a suggestion, could you try to maybe invest in a reasonable priced Microphone? It’s a little soft for some people.. your voice is so nice, it needs to be heard more clearly. Thank you!
I'm narrating a novel set in post-Roman Britania. I asked the author how he wanted the Latin accent since nobody really knows and he said he wanted that old timey accent from the movies. Thanks to your videos, I think I have a grasp on it. Thank you so much.
My pleasure! This video offers some more material as well (and the speaker is male which is more helpful for some people) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hEqesVTEFPM.html
