Ep192. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our Transatlantic sailing voyage on the 50' (Xquisite X5) Catamaran. We are on Day 4-5 of the voyage. The weather has gone from calm and sunny to windy, cold and foggy. We have to reef our sails for the first time and even though we deal big seas, we are visited by dolphins and tons and tons of seals around our boat.

Tamas should have the rest of the crew out reefing sails so you all learn to sail the boat when he's gone.

He does after this day. This high wind/reefing situation was not forecast, Or clearly we would would have reefed the evening before when it was still light or just taken down the main and gone with Genoa alone.

I never get seasick but for those who do, if you have a lemon cut it in half and when you feel queasy just lick the lemon half and it will stop you from being sick. Put it in a baggy and in your pocket and when you just start to feeling ill lick the lemon again. My mother got seasick and she used this method for years and it made her days aboard much better.

OK. Cool info. I wish I had known that. Later in the voyage when we leave Namibia we are in even bigger seas and I feel seasick again. After that I finally got use to it and never felt seasick again. I finally got my sea legs. We have to remember I came straight out of a Canadian winter to do this voyage and hadn't been on a boat in 6 months. Not having my sea-legs yet and then getting right into an Ocean passage was a bit too much of a drastic change, I guess. Plus I usually sail my own boat in daylight only. I often only started feeling seasick when trying to do my watch at night when I couldn't see the horizon.

In the old times of sailing ships, the night watch always reefed the main until morning. I always did that unless the weather report did not show any significant increase in wind speed at least over 15 knots. With a roller furling, you can always release or take in the genoa from the cockpit. If you require a second reef, it is time to wake up the rest of the crew.

Ya. We stopped leaving the full main out at night, after that situation. The main is a pain to reef because you have to turn directly into the wind. Like you say the Genoa can be reefed easily at any time.

If I were doing this kind of overnight sailing, as a matter of course I would reef sails at night. Not a blue water sailor so take with grain of sea salt. Safety first.

Craig, I'm sorry , I have to say it, Tomas leaving the safety of the cockpit without a life jacket.... FORGET, and IGNORE all the negative comments, some people just like to criticise, he's a well seasoned sailor, a big boy, and well able to look after himself, you were neither the skipper or his keeper, so not up to you to tell him what to do. (Besides he has probably more experience that all of the crew combined so would probably tell you to back off in a more direct manner.) It was a great video of real life, INCLUDING some very seasoned sailors getting complacent about their own safety; that's on them, not those who reflect real life in what they record. I speak as someone who some years ago lost a friend that was a very seasoned sailor who got complacent and paid the ultimate price as a direct result in what would be considered very safe waters. That was on HIM, nobody else! I could understand the comments if it was you that went up there, but it wasn't and I am sure mostt commenters would have read the previous ones, so why on earth keep repeating the same thing. Great video, by the way, keep'em coming, and please DON'T let these haters cause you to censor future episodes. Keep it real as the Americans would say!

Thanks a ton Stephen. You read the situation and how I was seeing it, perfectly. Tamas has lived on catamarans for many many years. He told us he almost never wears a PFD. Catamarans are very flat and therefore the chance of falling overboard, especially with those hard rails around the outside, is very minimal. He chose not to wear a PFD. Who am I to tell him he has to wear it? He was the de facto captain while he was on board for the first leg. The rest of the crew always wore theirs when the weather was nasty or when we were leaving the cockpit to make any sail changes. Such as when we put up or down the parasail. I’m not the boss of Tamas or any other crew members so I have no say in what risks they take. Again, thanks for writing this. I don’t take the haters comments to heart. RU-vid is full of people that find fault in almost any video. I don’t take it personally but it’s still nice to hear supportive comments.

I hear that. Bread is fattening but if you have guests onboard you are probably going to need some bread and nothing better (and cheaper) than fresh made bread. So even if not on your regular diet, I’m sure it will get used.

Really loved the video, exciting! Would have felt more comfortable for Lamus to have a PFD on when setting reefs in the main in strong winds and waves.

Looks like the Xquisite handled the ordinary conditions well. If the weather is going to be a bit yuk it looks to be a nice boat to be on.

Women onboard seems to make things more enjoyable. So screw the superstition that they are bad luck. We probably would have provisioned better and eaten a proper diet had we had a couple of women on board. They are just smarter than most men. ha ha. Bring on the women sailors!!!

Craig, great video! Tamas out on the bow in 26-28 kts. with no life line. That breakfast sounded good. Fresh bread from a bread maker is pretty common on boats now but smells great. I thought this episode is where a seal hitched a ride on the sugar scoop. Guess not. Be safe now that you’re back to work. Take care!

Glad you liked it. Tamas is a big boy. He says he never wears a life jacket. Who am I to say anything? I was wearing mine. A cat is a pretty stable platform so no real fear he was going to side off the boat being by the mast. The seal on the back happens in Walvis Bay in the future.

In boom is far superior to in mast. I have in-mast on my Mono. But the sail shape is like a bed sheet when you have no battens.

Man it seems that some of the people on board took a very cavalier approach to safety on the X5. Nobody should be on deck in rolling seas without their life jacket. It didn't look like there were jack lines either. Well cats are safer than monohulls in the man overboard respect, but it can happen nonetheless. Maybe I am just being overly callous!

There were jack lines on both sides. The Cat was bouncing but there is really no chance of falling overboard from the middle of the boat by the mast. It doesn't heave way over like a Mono does, where you could slide off.

@@Bowmans-Woods Primarily jack line should be rigged as close to the centerline as possible. For a catamaran it is recommended that they be rigged just port and starboard of the mast. Railing jacks drag a person in the sea if they fall.

Love learning about reefing on this boat, very interesting, all good to learn and know about, no matter what type of boat you have...However, it's also interesting that on a million dollar yacht that this isn't set up to be a bit easier and less dangerous. I would not feel comfortable going outside like that and hopping up there without being locked in, anything can happen, a sudden gust of 30 knots and MOB drill kicks in, and in that cold weather you can get hyperthermia very quickly, that will kill you first before you drown. Also, not sure why the reefing wasn't done WAY earlier before you all got into that weather scenario, unless it literally started minutes before you started filming. I see you stated it happened over night on the night watches, and wasn't dealt with sooner, as it required to wake up Thomas, which apparently no one wanted to do initially, as it SEEMED like the weather wasn't going to get any worse. My understanding is that WEATHER and NAVIGATION are the two most important things to learn when sailing, it can literally make the difference between life and death as anyone can learn to sail a boat, but not everyone can make the best decisions to keep yourself out of harm's way. Yes, squalls come out of nowhere, so you have to react quickly, but you should learn through knowledge and experience the importance of preparing for such eventualities. Overall, it all worked out for this cruise, and no one was in any danger fortunately. I think for me I learned to start reefing early and often, far better to be prepared, and I learned that probably for night watches its best to reef before it gets dark, especially if there is any possibility of foul weather coming through. Thanks for capturing all this and teaching us about the reality of sailing and how it's not always beautiful and perfect blue water sailing, LOL.

Thanks Michael. Tamas went up to put in the secondary reefs. If it had been worse conditions he could have chose just to stick with the reefing lines that are done at the helm. He only did the secondary reefing at the mast to avoid and chaffing on the lines as he assumed we would leave the 2nd reef in for a few days. The boat is designed to reef everything from the safety of the helm. The weather was not forecast to be this windy overnight or we would have reefed before it got dark. The wind was a bit much overnight but nothing that the boat couldn't handle. It got up to 30 knots just as the sun came up and that was when Tamas decided we should reef. You are right we should have probably reefed the main the evening before while we still had light. Turning into the wind to reef the main and bouncing around in the dark would not have been fun, or safe. It was a learning lesson and we didn't make this mistake again after this day.

Practice practice practice - no more Thomas; the rest of you need to get to work handling the sails every day whether you need to or not. Over and over again until you can do it by intuition in the mass confusion of a real emergency. Now is the perfect time to start.

Yes. The next day, when it was calm Tamas had a "Show us how to reef the main" with this rigging system. I filmed it but it was a bit dry so I didn't turn int into an episode. He leaves us in Namibia, so rest assured we sail a ton without him.

Guys....if you freshmen sailors doing your first trans-ocean crossing learn anything from your great adventure, please please please let it be that personal safety while at sea is of paramount importance; particularly when you are sailing in cold waters where you have a short window before a man overboard is in a life threatening predicament. The ocean floor is littered with the bones of tough guys who eschewed basic safety equipment/procedures in a blow. Don’t be the tough guys who don’t need no stinkin’ PDF’s, jack-lines and other ‘sissy’ safety paraphernalia. Be the ‘wimps’ who always arrive in port safe and sound. If you tempt fate enough times, fate will eventually intervene. Be safe, enjoy the great adventures in your future.

For us noobs what was Tamas doing on the deck, was he attaching a rope to a reefing point then pulling that line in and what would be the difference than lowering the halyard to make the sail area smaller? Sorry for the noob question I have only ever sailed dinghies. Also, love the series I will be at Annapolis this year to look at the X5 and make a final decision on which Yacht to buy cheers.

Yes. The single line reefing system will reef the sail from the helm but he was going to the mast to attach the secondary reefing straps so he could release the tension on the lines to eliminate any chafe. He didn’t need to do that but he thought we’d be reefed for days.

Not really a review. You will see us using it at various stops along the way. Im of 2 minds about it. It is super light which is good but when I tried to drive it alone back to the boat in big waves the lightness is not helpful since you bounce around like a cork and when alone all the weight is at the back so the bow bounces up and down a lot. You also get splashed a lot because there is no inflated inner-tube around the sides to deflect the spray. If you have a smaller cat and want to save on weight then it may be a good option but if you have a large cat and can handle a larger dinghy, I would go for a traditional RIB. We would like a RIB with a center steering console, assuming we could handle that much weight. Your dinghy is you car to commute to shore and back and to go exploring in and it should be something you invest money into.

Agreed. To be safe we should have reefed the the prior evening before it got dark. Winds were well above forecast but we brought in the main or sailed by Genoa or Spinnaker without the main in many days to follow. The main is the only one that is hard to reef as you need to turn into the wind to take it down. Thats not a pleasant task to do in the dark.

Please explain the reefing a bit. If I understand correctly, you were capable of reefing from the cockpit and would have the same/similar amount of line tension and chafe from mast to cockpit as any other cat with lines runs to the cockpit. But, the X5 also has a additional/optional clutch at the mast for the reefing lines to relieve tension/chafe from mast to cockpit. Is there also a clutch for that reefing line in the cockpit? Is it correct that in bad weather you need not go to the mast at all and the mast clutch would just stay open? Why add the clutch at the main? Was there a chafe problem on an earlier boat and this was the solution?

You have it about right. These is a single line reefing system that goes to the helm. You could just winch on those lines and it would do the job of reefing the main. But then the lines that run through the sail would be under tension the entire time and there could be chafe on the line if you left it like that for days in pounding seas. So you have the option of using hooks at the mast to reef at secure points, which takes the tension off the lines and avoids chafe. Tamas told me I should film him reefing to show how easy it is to reef but then confused the viewer by going to the mast and using the secondary reef points to avoid chafe as well. If it were me and it was bad weather for only a short time (like this ended up being) I would have only done the single line reefing and stayed within the safety of the helm. He knows the boat inside out and backward so he does what he thought was right. But so many comments have come in about him leaving the protection of the helm without a lifejacket on. I wish he had just done the single line reefing, like I thought he was going to do. It would have caused so much less confusion and negative comments.

That is the Zojorushi Bread maker (spelling may be off). I have one. It is pretty cool, does a good job overall (with two mixers it really does a good job kneading), and is a bit larger than its competitors.

@@scottb3774 Thanks the spelling was close enough that I found it on Amazon (Zojirushi). Not sure I'm ready to spend over $300 on a bread maker but it sure does look like the way to go when your on a boat where bread goes bad rather quickly. Probably great if your traveling by camper too. It definitely looks like a good one.

Glad someone else knew the answer. I took no notice of the make. I own a bread maker and think it is a must on a live-aboard boat because bread on these far flung islands can be expensive and bread tends to go bad fast in the heat.

Ha Ha. Yes, it was far from my usual diet, which is primarily vegetables. I wonder if that is partly why I was so susceptible to sea sickness. My stomach was all tied up in knots as it was from the food. Then throw me around day and night and of course I am not going to feel that great. ha ha

I am on old retired Navy guy. It’s all perspective, massive is 3 Ft is If your in a kayak. 20ft not so much if your on an Aircraft carrier.

What kind of speed did you get out of the X5 with those heavy winds? I know the cross-seas weren't helpful, but with 25+ knot wind, it must have been getting near the operational/sane maximum. FWIW: "possibly" depending on species, dolphins can swim at least "over 45 knots" without much trouble if they want to, so if they seem to be just goofing around your boat in whatever conditions, that's part of why. Whatever you and the sea are doing, it's a fraction of what they are up for. Crazy superior life forms in their own realm...

We got the boat up to 17 knots at times. Granted that was probably while surfing down swells but this Cat, Like most cats, can really fly when you are on a beam reach. Yes, the dolphins are awesome and I know they can swim way faster than we can sail. I was just surprised that they would try to swim in our bow in wavy, choppy conditions. But clearly any boat in any condition is something to play with.

That's not a crew. It's Tamas, Craig, and a few guys who don't particularly care for either of you. Seems that Tamas single-handed it to Namibia.

Tamas wanted to reef alone to show it can be done solo. He knew the boat and this reefing system inside out and backward. We are all new to this form of reefing and most of us (except Steve) are Monohull sailors so there was definitely a learning curve. There was not much sailing done on the boat, except for 1 test sail, before we set sail to Namibia. Tamas leaves in Namibia so we sail plenty without him.

Well, not massive. Just big compared to what we had before this. The camera never does it justice. We get worse later in the voyage.

Not sure what that means exactly? We have different personalities for sure, but thats to be expected when total strangers decide to sail together. But we got along well enough. I think they were kidding about cutting me up? ha ha

17:17 what I have lernt from SHARK WEEK is when there are that many seals around the US NAVY is in town or... the GREAT WHITE SHARKS are ''hunting'' don't give that ''its too cold'' bs... lol they have been sptted up by washington state, so like yea it ain't ''too cold!!!'' thanks... now my world is rokkin lol hahaahhaha

The “massive swellls” comment made me laugh. That’s easy sailing brother. When I was 8 years old I was on a 42’ sailboat from Nova Scotia to Annapolis in 20’ swell. Once you see some serious sea conditions then the weather shown in this video will be nothing to you. The boats today are built pretty damn tough including computer design and tougher methods of construction.
