Hello 1983, from the island in Scotland. This is brilliant. Thanks for posting. I'm 65 and always intended to cross the Atlantic, merchant marine. Didn't happen, never will now. I have, however, spent 15 years taking in the sunrises from the Calmac Oban to Tiree/Barra ferry. I may just have shared some of them with you...

Graham, why do you think it will never happen? In fact, the 2 other passengers on the ship were a German lady and a Swiss gentleman both retired and over 70 years old. If you are in good health (medical exam is required) and want to do it you can. Have some patience so the pandemic is behind us, make a plan and go :)

I did a 42-day round trip from Australia to Hong Kong and back in 2013. I absolutely loved it and hope that one day I will have the money and right living situation to be able to do something like it again. My one regret is that I never got to take a sauna. I also wish I had explored the engine room more, but I was too nervous I would somehow end up in the wrong place and get in trouble. Which was unlikely because the crew guys are all incredibly friendly and accommodating. Filipinos are pretty much the nicest people in the world.

Sailed on many ships with a Filipino crew.... They are really nice folk. You can party with them and a have a great time: In the morning, all due respect is back....and no hint of the night before...& no conflicts ever. The worst crew to sail with? I'd rather not say here, if you don't mind.

I did my first container ship from Dunkerque to Guadeloupe and Martinique and last one like you from Bremerhaven to Charleston & Miami, ship went on to Mexico and I picked it up on return leg. absolutely fabulous, French was best food obs and crew, officers were French and crew Romanian, both were great, I had the run of the ship except engine room when you made an appointment and were given the tour, unlimited access to bridge and got permission to go aft when casting off but had to keep an eye on the officer in charge and follow him without question. It was the best thing I have ever done, the solitude,the space, the insignificance of man when you're on the ocean is huge. US pilots at Charleston were great, told me to ask as much as I like and to question what was happening. Both trips I was the only passenger, if you like solitude and your own company, dont need amusing and at ease with yourself then this could be for you.

Grahame Gourlay I had a recent near death experience and as I healed I wondered what I’d like to do, for me. This would be it, if they’d accept a 55 year old black female. I would even love to help the chef. Maybe I’ll look into it.

Great video! I remember that in January 1974 I joined the Greek Merchant Navy on board N/V Aegis Logic (New built) for 23 months travelling into ًWestern Europe, Western Hemisphere, South Africa, India, Singapore, Australia, Japan, USA, Venezuela & Panama Canal. I remember that the most difficult seas were the Sea of Japan, South Africa and the English Channel. It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience!

This video brought back wonderful memories of my own trip. Your cabin was very much like the one I had on the Galaxy, except I didn't have a desk. It was also just a level below the bridge, so I had an awesome window view above the line of the containers. The most beautiful sunset I saw was when coming in to Japan. My crummy camera could not possibly capture how stunning it was. The officers on these ships are Europeans (mostly German) and the crews are almost entirely Filipino. And those boys know how to party.

TY, great expierence. Did Brh - NY on Container, great Adventure for me also. I loved every moment of it. The change to do one of my Dream things appeared and I took it. No pool, really rough Sea, I was allowed by Captain 1x for 20 min to go outside. Elevators shutdown, furniture was chained down and dishes were flying of the table. The food was great, the time on the Bridge so wonderfull, the way the entire crew had a possitive attitude was remarkeble. My bragging Rights: Never got Seasick"!. ... TY, got to enjoy my journey once again by watching your video.

I've always wanted to too, since I was about 13. That is, until I found out how much it costs! I could get a one-way plane ticket to Australia from the West Coast of America for less than $400, including tax. That's a 15 hour flight. On a cargo freighter, that's at least 26 days at a minimum of $3,700 USD (after paying for traveler's insurance, and assuming your passport and health record's are up to date).

totally worth it if you're looking for a true nautical experience unlike the "canned" product served-up by the commercial cruise lines. Can't recommend it enough, especially if it's been a long-time dream. Your instincts as a 13 year-old were spot-on.

very beautiful video with the occasional funny moment (in fast forward). Great shots of the bulbous bow, and I absolutely adored the engine rooms (my late father was a first engineer in/on cargo ships; my grandfather was a captain). I only wish you had spent a little more time on the bridge with slower pan shots :):) wishes for more ocean crossings! sailors are a weird lot, but warm at heart. cheers from Greece

@arnoldbeard9712 5 лет назад
@@BL0WUPFISHHello! I sailed on the Royal Mail vessel RMS St Helena at the time to St. Helena from Cape Town. It was the last Royal Mail Ship for the UK in the world operating. (Now there is an Airport on the Island. I have yet to try out) I have also sailed from the Island many years ago back in 1992/1995 to the UK Its not a busy shipping route form St Helena. Unless of course you are in Cape Town etc. However, Cruise ships and some odd cargo ships do still visit to the Island. A regular small Cargo ship from Cape Town takes Cargo to the Island often. Were you just a passenger travelling as per your video? Or do you actually work on Ships too? I love ships of all sizes and the sailing at sea too. I never get seasick!!! I sailed with P&O Containers and P&O Nedlloyd as a cadet. After I qualified I moved to Cruise then offshore vessels. I did enjoy box boats though. They were better when there was no TVs in cabins though as everyone socialised in the officer’s saloon/crew mess. Once TVs got put in cabins people just stayed in their cabins.

Wow, great video. Nice accommodations. Wondering how crew physiologically with the boredom of daily routine and not getting on each other's nerves. Nice to have some social functions but great to have alone time also. Can not imagine how it would not magnify bad habits (eating, drinking, smoking - if allowed - I'd stroll the deck smoking cigars every chance I get)

All those ships have a few additional officer's cabins that aren't use unless Owners, Owner's friends or ship surveyors etc. come aboard... and some time passengers...

Please forgive a stupid question, but were you working on board this ship or was this one of those occasions where you can book onboard a cargo ship as a passenger? and if so, how did you go about booking this passage and at what cost?
