The route for the 2024 Transcontinental Race has recently been launched with the race start, finish and checkpoint locations being announced. In this video I take a look at potential Transcontinental Race routes and look closely at the check point locations as well as adding a healthy dose of speculation about currently unannounced race parkour sectors.
You can see a rough route idea on ridewithgps here:

Mangart pass was in TCRNo6. Spectacular and my highlight of the race. I went back the year after during a tour! Besjlanica was also in TRNo6. That kind of gravel that I like many other hated.

Do it, do it! The cobbles will make a nice warm up for the legs

Mangartsko Sedlo (Mangart saddle) in the highest road in Slovenia (2.055m). The climb from Predil (Italy) is 12,5km @ 8,8% on tarmac.

This year was a learning experience. The severity of the off road sections came as a shock, but certainly doesn’t put me off. My initial impression is that it may be even more gravel in 2024 - so will factor that into bike setup. Would be nice to have a free choice through Alps. Riding through Greece this year was excellent, and route looks pretty flat to Turkey

Hi Josh, why do they not mix it up a bit and finish in say Poland or a Baltic state, heading riders thru the 'upper' Eastern European countries. I think it fair to say the last editions follow more or less the same route, a dash down to the Balkans where the racing begins so to speak. Not complaining just an observation.

Traditionally the TCR has always gone north west to south east across Europe so I suppose it's tradition more than anything. Plus there are other events with go North east to south west.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind Josh! Go on… you know you’ll regret it if you don’t! What time would you like to know is how can you train up to do one of these?

Ha I change my mind about tar every 5 minutes! I think the best thing to do is get as fit as you can gradually building your endurance and threshold. But the thing that will make you finish tcr is a positive mindset, excellent organisation and a good bit of stubbornness.

WOW, your route is 2km next to my home in Saarlouis. If you choose this route, please let us know. I'll wait there with a cold bottle of water (or a traditional beer and Lyoner) ;-)

The thought of riding a bike into Istanbul is terrifying😱😱😱. It seems so potentially dangerous ,I'm baffled as to why the organisers have done this, putting lives at risk. Not only traffic ,but I would also be well out of my comfort zone as a lone female cycling through the city.Safety in numbers, but from what I've seen as a dot watcher, people are usually very well spread out with huge gaps between riders. Definitely not for the inexperienced.

It certainly was a bit sketchy in 2015 due to the road works, but the northern route wasn’t too bad once past them. That’s why I suspect there may be a mandated finish parcour from the north east which is a bit less hectic

What other self supported/bikepacking races take place in europe or elsewhere annually during the summer months? Is tcr the only one of it's kind?
@joshibbett
@joshibbett 8 месяцев назад
There are plenty more nowadays. In road there is the north cape 4000, Northcape/Tarifa and Via. Plus many off road events
@colinhession40

Thanks for the info, is there a race that's shorter in distance than tcr and is road focused?
@joshibbett

@@colinhession40 Yes look up the PanCeltic race, 2 Volcanoe sprint, Race Around Poland or the Biking Man series. I'm sure there will be a few others aswell

A ferry? So "close" to the end.. I suspect one that doesn't go all night long? So if you miss the last one you get an 8 hour penalty? Sounds harsh so close to the finish.
@joshibbett
@joshibbett 9 месяцев назад
Pretty sure there are 24h ferries there as it's a relatively short route. I'm sure the organisers would take that into consideration... but as I said its all speculation on my part at the moment

The TCR has some seriously wacky rules, Josh Reid got DQed after the race if I remember correctly. Riding to close to another rider for an extended period of time or something. I think the rules are overblown.
@joshibbett
@joshibbett 9 месяцев назад
I think the rules are fair enough and similar to almost every other race, but a little more common sense needs to be used in the application of them rather than trying to look for things to penalise riders for.
@MRegah
@MRegah 8 месяцев назад
the case of Josh Reid is a rumor making the rounds quite a bit apparently without people knowing what was actually going on, so I would urge you, too, to check the case in more detail before using it as an argument. (I wrote extensive analyses of penalties etc. in TCR). But I agree that some rules or decisions seem like going out of hand; agreeing with @joshibbett here.

Instead of profusely apologizing 10 times for your pronunciation - how about taking 1 minute before the video to look them up?

@@joshibbett You're the gold standard of reporting in ultracycling. Your videos do an amazing job of bringing races alive and for many people are the only touchpoint they get with some of the most iconic races we have. I am sure you recognize that. With that in mind, it's hard to understand why you can't be bothered to care about getting some of the absolute key names of the race right. Literally just takes a minute of preparation and goes a long way to show respect to those that give it their all.
@joshibbett

@@hansotto089 Well thanks for watching and enjoying the videos. You might be surprised to know that I actually do a lot of prep for my videos, however unfortunately pronunciations are something I struggle with regardless of whether I've heard it a million times or not. Dyslexia and in particular sequencing have always been an issue and one I which I had to work on a lot when I was younger... however put certain letters and a particular order and I still struggle to this day. So I'm very sorry if you are offended by my bad pronunciations, but I don't see that accusing me of being disrespectful and not giving it my all is particularly constructive. If you want a perfectly polished TV standard production then I'm afraid that this isn't the channel for that, however if you can accept a few mistakes and would like to hear some hopefully useful and insightful content based on experience then please do keep on watching.
