In this video, I'm trying Sennelier oil pastels for the first time! I'll experiment with the combination of gouache to see how they work together and what results I can achieve. I'll explore different techniques and textures. Watch as I navigate the challenges and surprises of combining these two mediums, and see what happens when I mix oil pastels and gouache on the same painting.

A little goes such a long way with these creamy gems. They are messy, but like baking your 1st loaf of sourdough, your kitchen is mayhem, but by loaf #3 it’s only minor chaos 🙃. Love your puffin painting & it as interesting to how the OP got on layered atop the gouache. I tape tracing paper atop the finished work to minimize unwanted transfer during storage. Thanks Cecile for modeling how you tack a new-ish medium. Look forward to your future explorations

Thanks for the tips! I love the sourdough image, as when I made my first it was a complete mess. I'll keep playing with this.

As these are very soft, I find using cheaper oil pastels for bigger areas and under layers and my senneliers for top layers and details

Good point! I’ll try that! thanks!

Ohh wow that’s very creamy oil pastels! I’ve never tried oil pastels for artwork much. I have just a light blue pastel & a white pastel that I use mostly with my watercolors to add a bit of sparkles textures to my seascapes landscapes. I really appreciate your sharing details of this with us. I’m not fond of using pastels because of the crumbling & messy outcomes that I had in the past.
@CecileYadro

It was the same for me! but this one doesn’t make much crumbles as it’s so creamy. I have to dig more into this!

Wow! I was wondering about adding the Sennilar oils to my Goauche! Thank you! That same silicon tip blends prisma pencil into the oil pastels like magic if you want to add fine detail.

Oh, they really are creamy! 😂 A lot of artists use them later in the process, with harder oil pastels as a base. I ordered some for this use, and discovered I was very allergic to them. 😭 So I can only use them outdoors, and now I am waiting for the Norwegian spring to warm up the temperature.

Ooooh! allergic? did you try with gloves?

@@CecileYadro No, I don't reckon they'll help my nose not to clog up, and my sinuses start aching.🤣

I have the same problem with the Sennelier soft pastels. They aggravate my asthma, so now I have all 120 beautiful colours I can't use. 😢

@@sabinelloyd8532 oh, I am sorry to hear that! Luckily, I didn't buy or get so many. But can you use the their oil pastels? And are other soft pastels fine for you?
@sabinelloyd8532

I have not tried oil pastels and I had pretty much used up my other pastels before buying the Sennelier set. But I am starting to use a bit of pastel for adding final touches and that's OK because I create minimal dust.

Great seeing this combo. I’ve been painting with Sennelier oil pastels for 8 years and just bought Holbein primary gouache set. So happy to know they are compatible. Baby wipes will help clean your hands. Sennelier is messy but yummy. You can add a dab of oil pastel onto your clay shaper ( silicone brush) and get good details.

Thank you! I'm not fond of baby wipes, too much waste, and the smell is awful. Never mind, soap is great, and I like to get my hands dirty when making art. And I do have clay shapers, never thought of using them with oil pastels, even if I use them with oil paint!
