Hasbro celebrates 40 years of THE TRANSFORMERS with a special event playing nationwide in theaters. I was there for the very first night and I saw some cool things, but also a lot of missed opportunities. This is my honest review.

Hasbro needs to have actual fans involved in their planning and presentation instead of having corporate heads making everything a cash grab.

The pitiful “In Memorial” part at the end really irked me. They didn’t even show their faces. And I’m pretty sure the original narrator has passed away too and he wasn’t mentioned at all.

To be fair, the guy they had for Star Scream’s voice was pretty good. He seemed to actually give a damn about his performance. But I thought we were getting REMASTERED versions of the episodes. Like a sneak peak of a forthcoming bluray release or something.

I was blown away by how good Frank Todaro's Starscream was. A lot of folks have tried to replicate Chris Latta's style and it feels like it's never worked very well - But Frank Todaro's performance was pitch perfect.

I can't be the only one who finds this event harming the movie theaters. As an experience, like many videos here are discussing. Plus, for an occasion like this anniversary, wouldn't it have made more sense to show the Transformers movie from 1986, in theaters instead?

If feels like those of us who grew up in the 70s 80s and 90s feel cheated because the things that we love her no longer cool we like them and we want other people to like them just as weird but they don’t cater to those audiences anymore when they grow up it’s like you’re gonna roll. You don’t get it no longer relevant so that’s why physical media is so great because we can enjoy it somewhat like it was me when’s the last time you saw a cartoon and a toy commercial together like it was in the 60s 70s kids today don’t consume medium like that so those of us who grow up like that frustrated that it’s not like it was and it’s understand

I went on Wednesday night. My AMC played it in one of the smaller-sized theater rooms, but it was pretty full. The atmosphere of the room was... very formal. I had originally wanted to get there early so I could hang out and chat with other fans before it started, but IRL stuff kept me from getting there any sooner than about five-to-ten minutes before it started. When I got there, the room was real quiet as the typical pre-trailer ads were playing, with no one talking to each other and everyone keeping to themselves. The guy sitting to my right even moved over one seat during the script-reading of the first episode. The only people in the room who seemed to be having any fun enjoying themselves were a small group sitting toward the middle-right of the room (I was up in the back row), who could be heard chuckling at some of the zanier points in the episodes, and one of them made a "Ha! Superhuman Spike!" joke when Spike punched Rumble in the first ep. But other than them, the room was filled with dead silence from everyone else. And when it was over, we all got up from our seats to leave and nobody said a single word to anybody in the room. Only a few folks said they had fun to some of the ushers standing outside the theater room waiting to come in and clean up, but the total vibe of the room was really introverted and unfriendly, very much the opposite of how TF fans act when at conventions, in my experience. It felt less like a fan event and more like a formal opera experience where nearly everyone was on their best behavior and really stiff. That let me down more than the actual screening event itself. A few things to point about what you said: - Those two Hasbro people at the beginning that welcomed us to the event, they are hosts of several of the livestreams that Hasbro does on RU-vid when doing new toy reveals every few months or weeks, and were using the same set as the livestreams for that welcome message. But, all those toys they pointed to on display in the video were all old stuff that had already been seen and released beforehand, some even being last year's toys. So that was kind of redundant for me, having already seen all that stuff before. I didn't need to be shown or reminded about old toys that especially weren't relevant to the main feature presentation of this event. - Transformers One is, ostensibly, meant to be a prequel to the live-action movies (or at least, just the first live-action movie from 2007) set in the far distant past. Judging from the trailer, it's deriving much of its story from the modern Transformers lore that Hasbro first crafted together in 2010 for what came to be known as the "Aligned continuity". Said modern lore took inspiration from a lot of previous TF fiction, like the IDW comics (particularly the mini-series "Megatron Origin"), the Marvel Comics (Primus creating the Transformers), the G1 cartoon (the Quintessons being aliens who enslaved the Cybertronians, but this time did not create them because Primus is already in this story), and of course the 2007 movie (Optimus and Megatron having originally been friends and allies before the war destroyed their friendship turned them into enemies, and the Autobots launching the AllSpark into space away from Cybertron to keep it out of Megatron's hands). Though, Transformers One also seems to be adding its own spin on this modern backstory rather than just copy-pasting it verbatim. After all, the brand has to keep things fresh to keep itself alive. - Regarding the 90-second clip for season 2 of Transformers: EarthSpark, I find it ironic that people would grumble about a clip for a kids cartoon when they came to watch four episodes of what is also a kids cartoon. After all, don't we nerds have an inner child within all of us? EarthSpark's also a really good show, both in terms of writing and fight choreography. When it wants to get action-packed, it goes all-out, giving us some of the best onscreen fight scenes this brand has had in a long time. But it isn't all just fighting, either, as it has a lot of smartly-written characters with a lot of charm and heart. Not to mention the stellar voice cast that includes actors from Game of Thrones, Keith David as Grimlock, and Weird Al Yankovic coming in season 2 to voice Cosmos. - What makes the sped up credits even more baffling is that the credits in all four episodes are the same credits. Each season of the G1 cartoon had one set of credits played at the end of every episode per season. So they could have just stitched the second, third, and fourth episodes together with just one session of credits at the end of Episode 4. - The reason Bumblebee was made mute in the live-action movies is all because of Steven Spielberg. He wanted to "recapture the magic of E.T." by making the alien companion of the main human character in the first movie be an alien who doesn't speak much. Originally, Spielberg even wanted NONE of the Transformers to talk in the first movie, wanted them ALL to be mute creatures like Bumblebee ended up being. But when they thankfully decided not to do that, Bumblebee being left mute was a compromise, one that has been a frustrating reminder ever since, and wound up bleeding over into other fictions of the brand before the creators of those were like "Okay, he's been mute long enough, let's give him back his voice." It's one of the worst decisions Spielberg ever made in his time as executive producer of all these movies.

I am glad that other people feel like me. It felt like a lot of youtubers were happy with that. I think they were randomly using robot effects for the voices in the first episode. Soundwave sounded terrible, then fine. The Split screen was too distracting as well. My friend wanted to roll out, so thats what we did. They could have had commercial brakes through the episodes. Maybe have the new toys in old commercial parodies... etc.

I was somewhat disappointed, and glad to hear I'm not the only one. The theater I went to had reclining faux-leather seats, and if it weren't so hot that I was sweating all down my back and head I probably would've fallen asleep. I thought I heard snores from the rest of the theater during some of the quiet parts. The voice actors we lost had some big shoes to fill, as well as the youth of the remaining ones hard to recapture. But it was still jarring to hear that they used some original voice lines for characters that they had re-recording voice actors for - I guess they flubbed the lines too many times that they didn't have any salvageable accurate takes? And I caught two flubs left in, both by Frank Welker as Megatron. Once when talking to Starscream, he says "few ever leave" instead of "few ever lead", and another time he calls them "energon tubes" instead of "energon cubes". And the voice they chose to give for Spike sounded much more like a 4-6 year old instead of a working-age teenager. This "event" was much more like a box set disc extra that you watch once and then forget about. Not worth the US$20 per person I shelled out for it, not to mention the concessions.

Sorry you didn't like it. Saw this in a packed theatre in Ontario and thought it was cool. Hasbro Pulse had put up a page last month listing what this was comprised of, so none of it surprised me. I know the animation is full of errors and the remaining voice actors are old, but it was a kick to see the old episodes on the big screen with theatre sound, and cool to see Cullen and Welker revisit the pilot episode and see them in action. Was glad the Earthrise "preview" was a small fight scene at the beginning and not a full unbearable episode. There was a mix of geeks and families with kids in my auduence. About 3 or 4 adults left after the second episode. Most everyone, incuding families, stayed. The kids laughed at some of the mistakes but also reacted to Prime getting caught in the blast in the second episode cliffhanger and the rescue of Spike in the 4th episode. So I guess they enjoyed it? All in all, i enjoyed it for what it was, but you're right, a bit more emphasis on the remarkability of the show and rundown of the shows that ran after g1 that stood on the shoulders of this series would have hammered home a point for this. And more time with the cast's memories and closing thoughts would have been nice. Hopefully there'll be a 40th anniversary theatrical release of The Movie in 2026.

Greetings Heath, I appreciate the honest review. I actually bought tickets in advance for today at 12pm. I am bringing my son who is 18, and 3 other friends all in our late 40's. I have been a fan of all things Transformers the good and the bad, and have kept up with all the incarnations. However the friends I am bringing no nothing outside of the OG series, and the live action films. So yeah, this is going to be a bit rough, but Ill prepare them in advance, have their expectations tampered. I do look forward to the parts with the OG Voice Actors, but the rest sounds like an unfortunate missed opportunity. Ive seen a few other reviews that were mixed to negative. A couple positive ones but I think that was a mix of people who kind of schill for hasbro because they have large channels dedicated to TF, or younger fans who didn't really have any expectations at all, maybe that's a good thing?

Full disclosure. I saw this with my AMC A-List, so it was basically free and my daughter went with me on a buy on get one free deal. $0 expense, so our expectations were pretty tame. Yes the commerials loaded up front put everyone off. It was aggravating. The voiced over pilot was fun. We both respect the craft of animation and thought it was neat. I would have liked all three parts of the pilot to have been done like that, but I get it was probably a cost issue. The 3 normal episodes that ran were a hard watch. Animation of this quality was never meant to be projected fullacreen for the cinema and it showed. (As opposed to Transformers: The Movie which is breathtaking on the big screen!) We did enjoy the inclusion of the PSA. I forgot that Transformers had them. We always do the "Knowing is half the battle!" Followed by: "G.I. Joe!" This would definately have been a nice DVD extra feature, but not worth a trip and admission price. (We also saw IF on the same trip out, so it was a fun day all in all.)

I watched a UK screening and although we weren't quite as hammered with toy commercials, there was about the same length of time devoted to ads. I found myself going 'yep' many times to every word you said having myself feeling like it was neither one thing or another, but bits of a number of directions they _could_ have taken with the celebration. A full 4 ep table read would have been fine. Commentary would have been fine. The fan chats would have been great. Instead, we got none of the above really and I was very confused at what they were going for. And yeah, such an abrupt ending was like waking up from a weird dream. Surely if you're doing a memoriam they could have found some old footage of the late voice actors and a clip or two of their memorable moments? A little end credit music? Anything, really. I submitted a review to this effect too. What I will say as positives were that the replacement voices did pretty well and that it still provided the perfect opportunity, had I taken any kids along, to show them how we got done out of a good Jazz in later generations, with the most recent Mirage probably having more in common with that one than anything (not just the alt mode)!

You're absolutely right about the "commercial" aspect of it. It was a little disappointing that they were showing commercials on top of the usual marketing we get when we go to the theater and what's weird is that those commercials were already marketing toys to a demographic that were probably buying them anyway. That just seemed like a mandate from one of the Hasbro higher-ups. You're also right about the voice actors themselves. They are getting older and aren't able to reach the vocal range they once did. Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime voice now is fine but it's just too stiff, in my opinion. But that rendition in the first episode is just great. Even Frank Welker's Megatron is different but just a little off. The other thought I came away with was how decent that footage looked on the big screen, despite the animation errors and such. I'm guessing the original elements still exist so one can hope for a Blu-ray release (why no 4K?!) but probably not. I did notice on one of the later episodes, some scenes had some shifts in picture quality so there may have been some up-rezzing involved. Overall, I had the same issues as you but I thought it was fun.

My adult collector son and I went to the Saturday afternoon showing. Didn't mind the trailers. Kind of expected it. But to your point, there were no children in our theater. All adult nerds. We're not buying Beyblade or watching Earthspark. Wrong audience, Hasbro. Didn't mind the Beeltejuice trailer(though it was the teaser we've all seen by now). Enjoyed episode one, with the table read. Thought the voice actors, standing in for those no longer with us, did a respectable job. I love your ideas about talking to those members who still are around to talk to about the launch. And give us a few more of the PSA's! That would have been brilliant. In the end, no one left, but they certainly got up to use the restroom. And with each additional episode, it lost a bit of its shine. Didn't hate it, but would certainly think twice, the next time one of these rolls around.

Hey! That sounds so disappointing!! In the UK, I read the Transformers comic for years. In fact, I read the comic well before the cartoon was released here. The worst thing was that the cartoons were put on a holiday morning kids' show called WAC-a-day (Wide Awake Club was a Saturday morning shown in term time.) They'd cut a single episode into five pieces and show them from Monday to Friday. I bought a few of the VHSes - Arrival from Cybertron, Megatron's Master Plan and Desertion of the Dinobots - with my pocket money. I went to the cinema to see Transformers: The Movie at the beginning of 1986. I'd read the comicbook lead up in the UK, Target: 2006 (the year was wrong so the UK retcon was that the movie starts around December 31, 2005!!) I always liked Soundwave. The best thing for grown up 'me' was seeing the opening of the movie Bumblebee: finally, the Transformers on screen as I knew them and a storyline a little reminiscent of the original run of the comics and the original cartoon. I never understood why the modern movies skipped the 'buried under Mount St Hilary' part of the story. I've got everything on DVD now. Just need to get the movie on 4K whenever I get to the end of season two! A pity the event was such a flop. Clearly the people behind it had no idea about their audience. Given the advances in animation technology, a remake/reanimation of the original three-parter with modern animation, using the original voicework would have been much more exciting. It could have had a cinema run perhaps alongside Transformers: The Movie and a 4K release. I guess they would rather just con people into a (not very) special event!

@DomH75 14 дней назад
@@liokaizer1662 Yeah, it was a nightmare to put them together, sitting there with the VHS machine on pause. Four minutes, cut to Timmy Mallet for two seconds, then jump cut to the next four-minute chunk, usually narrowly missing the first line of dialogue! It was so weird a few years ago to be around 40 and finally able to watch these episodes properly!! I'm glad I wasn't the only one frankensteining episodes together!!

I did that too the only one I remember taping was A Plague of the Insecticons. Apparently Sky TV did get Transformers in 1986, but no one I knew had it.

Why invite Greg Berger and Paul Eiding, who weren't part of the first season and not invite Corey Burton and Victor Caroli? Why not have them so three episodes and then either bloopers, or a roundtable at the end? It was very underwhelming.

That's a bummer to hear but I can see what you mean Heath. A bit of a side note but I went to see The 1986 movie via a Fathom Event and I also felt the lack of love. The showing was late, the whole intro had no sound, they restarted it and the sound was totally uncalibrated. Also, it was a dish feed which was supposedly high def but looked like standard definition. It really soured my desire to attend any future fathom events, especially when one can watch it on 4K at home. I do like the cinema experience though.

I feel vocie actors like Cullen it works for each time they play the character. OP G1 prime is fun and a good young leader vibe. I think when he did the trilogy of films, the vocie found itself and became that ideal of how kids back then viewed his vocie optimus, and it sounds so nice, and now it does too it's changed a bit since the trilogy of films but its still Optimus Hands down at his Prime (pun not intened) I love his vocie as when he is older that's Just Prime! Wish we knew what Chris chris latta would have sounded like in this age on CGI film or a new cartoon and what he would change, engaging a new audience. - Luke

HASBRO is going hard on the fan money extraction front. Releasing all OOS figures they can milk, etc. I was surprised to see Transformers on my AMC app and purchased right away before I could even think. Went in thinking that the first episode was a bonus before the movie, but later decided to check the fine print on this ‘event’ and saw not to expect much more than the first 4 eps. It was an ok, but mostly unnecessary experience for me. That first episode reading plus the movie would have been a better pairing.

I went to see the event with my kids today and had to leave while episode 2 was playing (yes, I totally agree, the event was just hallow, not enough effort from Hasbro to make this even either memorable or meaningful). Btw one thing I wanted to point out is the G1 series was actually animated by South Korean team led by Nelson Shin (who also animated the light saber in original Starwars movie); Transformers the movie was animated by the same team but supervised by Japanese animators which is why the movie's amination is much less crappy. Thanks for sharing your honest review.

That's a shame. I watched TF and Beast Wars and about 10 years ago re-watched G1, but I've only ever had one toy (as an adult). My mother couldn't afford them when I was a kid, so I had Go Bots, but either way they came under He-Man, GI Joe, comic books, etc. A nice thing about He-Man was that Filmation had a unique deal with Mattel that they had creative control so they couldn't be told (unlike TF and Joe) that they had to push the newest line. Hence all the original characters that have no (vintage) toys in MotU.

the DVDs from Shout Factory had a little insert that basically said this is the best it's ever going to look because the elements were destroyed. Even if they but it on bluray or 4K, they'd basically be burning a dvd image onto a high-def disc. We'd all buy it, but it really wouldn't be worth it.

Thank You for the review. I was considering going Sunday and now glad I didn't. Went to the 35th (?) anniversary of Transformers the Movie, played in RPX no less and they did a horrible job with the audio, so the "event" things for Hasbro/Transformers have been disappointing over the last few years. I also don't have any interest in Transformers :One. Favorite G1 Transformer: Ironhide (also played by Peter Cullen).

I loved the transformers when I was growing up. My favorite one would have to be beachcomber. Ask for this new 40th anniversary crap it’s because Hasbro is running out of money. They are almost bankrupt so they’re trying to get us to come in and take care of them by buying toys for nostalgia purposes.

Well now I won´t complain about 10 minute commercial. I only got a preview of the new season of that new show, showing a new dino bot so okay. I did laugh a lot seeing the cast re-read the first episode and then see them talk afterwards. I would have liked just that for 20-40 minutes see the work to do that. So when the rest played the way they did it was sort of draging. Normally I would enjoy seeing a tv-episode in movie theatre to hear the sound better. Now there were a piece of music that sounded really good and the intro sounded good too in theatre but the SFX are roguht, like the laser sounds peeked so high it was hard to listen, no depth to them I understand being tv-edited how SFX was quickly put in. And yeah I don´t know how much it would cost to correct animation and voice errors. There is this scene where they save a family from the overflowing dame and you hear all men say thank you, one of them was a mother who clearly is suppose to say a line but it´s a man. And it felt wierd to put in the 4th episode. Sure it continues but felt so distant and had worse quallity then the first 3. But I guess you have to make it 1 hour and 30 minutes minimum even thought there are movie under 1 hour playing in theatre. So still glad I saw it, it was neat but could be way better. But these guys have done TONS of this type of stuff at conventions and it was fun to hear thier voices none filtered. What did it cost you? 11$ here.

This really was a letdown for every reason you stated. The opening trailers and commercials were really bad. You have this cast all there, the ones who are left, and that is all they could do?! I would have preferred them to voice all of the episodes with more bloopers and interviews. Not because they're going to do a better job voicing them now, but because this is possibly the last time they will all be there to do it. Because we want to see them laugh and reminisce, to tell stories from then. What a disservice to them and the fans. Also, apparently some theaters had special 40th anniversary cups and popcorn buckets. Not mine, so that was another letdown. Hasbro sucks.
