You can play as your custom characters in multiplayer but servers are down

Do you need to buy the dlc to unlock everything completely? Or can you unlock it naturally?

you can buy dinobot/insecticon for DLC as far i know

You have to buy DLC for the dinobots called "Dinobot Destructer pack" then there is a DLC for the insecticons and G2 bruticus colors called "Massive Fury pack" and it also includes the pre order items and hound, then there is a DLC which gives you WheelJack, Blast off, Zeta prime, Ultra Magnus, and Perceptor
