I agree that a different week could have helped. The one big benefit of this week is that it will still be a big draw for Fourth of July. Still I think late July or august could have been great for it. It’s also impressive that it improved on both bumblebee and the last transformers film.

I think people overhyped the Spiderverse box office as though it was on-track to make a billion. The first Spiderverse didn't cross $400 million internationally.

Growing up loving movies and movie business, there wasn't much of a place outside of celeb gossip to talk about the industry business. Was at the theater Saturday to see Boogeyman and I can say that it was PACKED. I thought it was for Spider-Man but when I looked at the times, it was perfect time for the Transformers showing. Sure enough, when my movie was done and went back to the lobby, again it was packed for Transformers. I’m glad I put it on my top 10 for the summer lol Spider-Man, I noticed, has been getting streamed on TikTok and I’m not sure if that also affects its box office but that’s something I kept in mind. I’m still pulling for my number one for the summer but I know it’s going to be fight

An idea for you Dan to help contextualize "The Legs" of a film -- when you are charting things out over weeks vs one another -- put last years "Top Gun: Maverick" on there and/or "Avatar: The Way of Water" to "show" visually how things are doing compared to something we KNOW did well over time. The last chart on the Summer Box Office is what comes to mind this video to do it for, comparing "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3" vs. "The Little Mermaid" vs. "Across the Spider-Verse" -- we'd really see how well (or not well) they're doing long run/legs compared to say "Top Gun: Maverick"

You might be planning this already but it'd be great to see you add every big blockbuster movie (even the ones that end up flopping) to see the week to week path each movie had during their runs through the summer. If a Top Gun type movie ends up happening it'd be great to see it slowly beat out the others in the later weeks

After Elemental is out, it might be interesting to do a video on animated movies post pandemic. Because I know a lot of people crap on Light-year as a bomb. But as far as opening weekends go, a lot of animated films haven't been able to hit as high as it did. And we might finally have enough films that have released to make that an interesting topic to look at

I went and saw Transformers and Spider-man this weekend, and can confirm we spent $15 on TF because they had it on 3D Imax, and only spent $9 on Spider-man because we couldn't even get Imax at our theater

Looking at the franchise tracker: you bring up the point about the day the movie released effecting the actual weekend box-office. I wonder how each movie in each franchise would stack up if you compare their opening 3 days (or 4 days, if you include Thursday sales on a "typical" release), no matter what day of the week the opening day is. For example: if a movie opens on a Tuesday, and if we are including Thursday sales on a typical weekend, then the opening 4 days would be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. It might be interesting to see if it is comparable to another movie in that franchise that opened on a Thursday/Friday.

I was thinking something similar. But from what I’ve seen for Wednesday releases, it usually makes huge money for that first day then falls off hard for Thursday and then picks back up for the weekend. For revenge off the fallen: Wednesday biggest day. Saturday was second. Friday was third, then Sunday and then the Thursday. Dark of the moon was the same, but it also had a small preview on Tuesday that I think nowadays would be rolled into the Wednesday number. Long story short, I think the actual closest comp to a usual Friday release would be to take the Wednesday in the place of the Friday and then count Saturday and Sunday as is. Even then, I think that would be underselling these Wednesday releases compared to traditional releases, but it would be closer.

I was at the movies yesterday (Sunday ~3pm) and it was uncharacteristically packed. I think it was a combination of spiderverse, mermaid, and guardians. but maybe all of the above. anyway it was nice. I was there for Guardians. (mixed feelings. good, but... pretty hard to get through...)

I really like the profitability breakdown you do for films. It would be interesting to see a top 10 of the year by profitability. Hopefully this would be something that you could set up a spreadsheet to do without too much work. but if it's a huge lift I totally respect not doing it.

Far too many of these movies are stacked on top of each other with Elemental & The Flash just a few days away, could all do with a little more breathing room! GoTG 3's currently @$807.2m, with a Disney Exec recently confirming that expectations for their non-Avengers MCU movies are in the $750-950m range depending on the movie/franchise, that makes Quantumania's $476m their one & only post-pandemic box office bomb.

When I see your top ten the only thing I have been confident with is that the little mermaid would not be as high as you put it, and then I also think mission impossible would be higher on the list... Both for the same reasons really one currently has much negativity about it via Disney and Tom cruise is just really popular online these days which matters I feel.

I think AMC is still doing surge pricing because I spent $13 when I watched Across the Spider-Verse for the second time two Sundays ago, but I only spent $9 for Transformers last Sunday. I didn't watch either of them in a special format, just regular matinee screenings.

Update: A Whole bunch of Disney films got delayed probably because of WGA strike. Most notable: Avatar 3 is now in 2025. Next two Avengers in 2026 & 2027.

Hey Dan, great show as always, just thought of a suggestion for the box office flashback. You show the totals for each movie, but it might make more sense to show the final totals for each instead. For example, Ghostbuster opening to 40M adjusted for inflation is interesting, but of course it has a total of 40M, what would be more interesting is to know is that it finished with a 629M domestic total. Since we only get these flashbacks once, we dont get to revisit movies performances very often, so it'd be a fun way to compare movies total from then and now

I saw Spider-Verse on Cineworld SuperScreen and Transformers on the exact same screen in the same venue. TF cost an extra third for a ticket, I have to assume it's because the visits were on a Tuesday and a Saturday respectively.
