TRANSFORMERS: THE BASICS on GOBOTS 

I loved how Armada used Leader-1. It established that Leader-1 was the peaceful commander of all Mini-Cons (just like the Go-Bot version before Cy-Kill went all rogue), but Megatron enslaved him for his nefarious purposes (just like how Transformers bought Go-Bots to use for their own products). It’s kinda hilarious if you think about it

I feel like even if the Go-Bots did come back, most of them would just wind up getting killed by a cosmic-empowered Copter

I love how this is an April fools joke but at the same time is actually still a really good quality, informed and researched video and not just some shitty YTP like most people do! Nice work!

I love that for an April Fools gag I feel as informed about the Gobots as with any other video you've put out 😃

I think the Michael Bay movies (or at least the tie-in comics) took some inspiration from the old Gobot cartoon. The relationship between Optimus & Megatron is pretty similar to that of Leader-1 & Cy-Kill in that they used to be friends until one of them got jellous cause their master favored one over the other. Also, The Fallen is rather similar to a Gobot character called The Evil One. I would like if the Gobots were used more in modern Transformers media. Gobotron could be a colony world for Cybertron

The GoBots story actually sounds pretty interesting to me. I think GoBots should be given a second chance with Transformers. They showed good potential! I have some good ideas.

The issue with the GoBots is that new viewers to the animation will not be able to identify who's the good guys from the bad guys.

Great video! The Go-Bots don't get the love they really deserve. In most households in the 80's, for every one large diaclone sourced Transformer, most of us had 3-5 Go-Bots. While they didn't compete with the diaclone toys in style, they were much better than the mini autobots with their die cast parts. Hannah Barbara cartoon troupes honestly hurt the line as much as anything. While Transformers focused heavily on serious characters like Optimus Prime, Go-Bots loaded up the Scooter stupidity and had Masters of the Universe level incompetent villains. Megatron seemed a conceivable threat, Cy-Kill did not. Still, the toys were, despite their simplicity, well conceived, fun to play with, and very durable.

Even though it was an April Fools video, I appreciate how you gave us some good info on the GoBots, Chris! Never stop being you.

I love how this is an April fools day video yet seems like a real proper video great job!

I didn't mind GoBots back in the day. They transformed, looked decent and were no worse than the mini-Autobots, for the most part. And they were cheap, so you could fill out your Transformer ranks pretty easily to have large scale battles. Most kids I know did the same thing. In 'The Toys That Made Us' TF episode, one guy says he got a GoBot from his dad and he tossed it into the fire. That guy was an idiot if that's true. First, never through away a toy. I shouldn't have to explain why. Second, if you really don't like the toy or character, make him fodder for your better toys during play. Even broken toys that looked robotic could serve as dead bodies to litter the battlefield of your living room or bedroom. After all, maybe they weren't quite dead, but were crawling across the carpet, torso broken and missing an arm, toward your unsuspecting heroes.

I am always thinking that it would be cool if Gobots and Transformers will run on the same universe with of course the bad guys and good guys teaming up.

You really committed yourself to this joke. I will say this though. I do think that if the robot designs in the cartoon weren't so literal, we would be having a way different discussion about GoBots. Imagine if Megatron looked exactly like the toy in the cartoon. How different are the Ironhide and Ratchet toys from some of the deluxe GoBots figures. I got made fun of hard in elementary school when I brought in my Ironhide. Everyone said it was a GoBot.

1:36 When I was very young my Dad bought 'TrainMan' it blew the minds of kids and adults alike. We take transforming toys so much for granted now! Of course, MachineMen were all but forgotten shortly after when the Transmogrifiers came out.

While potentially even more off-beat than this, I'd love a similar April Fools video dedicated to BIONICLE. Growing up in the 2000s, it was difficult not to compare the two, with both having very similar appeals - being toylines about robot action figures that you could transform (or build) into other kinds of toys. With the fact that Transformers was experiencing a big revival with Armada and later Bayformers and Animated, and Bionicle (besides being the new kid on the block) itself being unfathomably huge, quickly establishing itself as arguably one of the most important toylines from the 21st century, it was extremely common to see other kids besides myself treat the two franchises as sort of rivals - or, at the very least be interested in both franchises, lol.

I love the Go-Bot/Machine Robo toys. April Fool's aside, this was a good video.

I read the 2018 Gobots comic from IDW a time ago, basically it reinvented 90% of the cartoon lore, mixed it up with a 60s movie and the ending it´s a mindblower

You know..I'm just gonna say it, I liked them both. As a kid I immediately picked up any and all transforming robots, they were my thing, and still are.

I was actually more into Go-Bots then I was Transformers as a kid, probably because my parents just so happened to buy me more of that merchandise without thinking about it. I have my VHS copy of the first couple episodes standing next to Transformers the Movie.

I still have fond memories of the Go Bots despite having both toy lines I always preferred their show. I even saw the Rock Lord movie in theaters but have never seen Transformers The Movie. When I played with them Leader-1 was a co-leader/2nd in command to Optimus Prime. They stand side by side on my shelf to this day.

Ugh finally someone said it. I'm glad the patreon crowd got to you and convinced you to make the change. After a year on the deep, vast history on the GoBots, I mean you could do several segments on Puzzler alone his story is so rich and intriguing, maybe then do MASK ? Changing focus completely is the best way to keep a fan base happy.

As a kid I knew Go-Bots were dead when they released a movie about rocks.

This video reminded me I had atleast 4 figures as a kid that I can clearly remember. Scales, DiveDive, Vamp, and BugBite. And I know that I frequently asked them for Transformers. Man my folks were cheap..lol.

When I saw this I was afraid it would just be some half-assed joke but no it's actually good and informative!

This reminds me of the American Dad episode where Steve dresses as Cy-Kill and lashes out when someone calls him a Transformer and he says something like "Transformers are for children. I am a Go-Bot"

As a kid I didn't think twice about using Gobots in my Transformers storylines. The original Gobots tended to be more durable too, made mostly of metal parts, if I remember correctly

The go bots are the poor transformers

Interestingly, Gobots toys from the 80s survive in many cases in better shape than their g1 Transformers counterparts. The small rugged die cast construction meant that they were less likely to get broken, and in most cases there were no guns, missiles or other accessories to lose.

I was kinda hoping this was gonna be a new series, despite being an April Fools joke, I did learn some new stuff about the go-bots from this.

I once a had a dream where a game very similar Transformers Devastation was released for Nintendo Switch. The only difference is it was featuring the Go-Bots instead of The Transformers, but it was surprisingly good and in many ways better than the 80's animated series, with Puzzler being a kickass boss.

Although the French series recast the Machine Robo into GoBots names, they were not as you depicted. Blue Jet was Leader-1, Triple Jim was Turbo, and Rod Drill was given the voice actor for Scooter! Rom and Leina were Nick and AJ. The Baikanfu robot was Courageous!

Do The Basics: Leader One or Rotor! And hell, for all we complain about them, it's mainly because of the terrible cartoon and the godawful names. The TOYS however, could be decent, and often acted as Autobot or Decepticon reinforcements, as everyone picked up a couple thrift stores for loads less than a Transformer on the shelf at Toys R Us or something.

Even if it is April Fool's it is a very nice retrospective on the Gobots. I loved both when they were out to bad it didn't take off just as much as Transformers did. Very informative and I own all the series like Transformers and it only makes me want to finally see the episodes I missed the first time around like not seeing the episodes with their couple of combiners.

Go-Bots weren't that bad. When I played with the kid next door we'd include the Go-Bots with our Transformers for more epic battles. As much as I love Transformers the early toys were about as flimsy and breakable as the Go-Bots, but we kept buying it because Hasbro had a better cartoon and marketing.

I had the Playschool spinoff series, and that first picture of the blue jet robot I had that one too. That was my favorite.

My version of a new backstory: Before the war,Cy-kill was a senator,trying to find his way up the ranks of the Gobotronian Parliament when one day he found a dark truth that the Government had been experimenting in them by literally killing volunteers and implanting their hearth and almost dying brain into a small robotical case. This made Cy-Kill go mad and swore to reveal this secret on the local Gobotrian media. But his plan failed as he was found an killed from a paramilitary force which took his "lifeless" body in a military base to become the first techno organic being. When he was reawakened he saw himself into a mirror and went rogue. Killing everyone there before leaving the facility destroyed. Mad,he went out to a killing spree until a young soldier named Mathus came face to face with the robotica maniac. The battle went on for days with more support coming to destroy Cy-kill. Sadly for Mathus he was badly injured. So his brain and hearth were transferred into an experimental body that could change to a Gobotronian jet. And so Mathus became known as Leader-1. And so the battle for Gobotron began. Going on for ages.

GOOD ONE! I figured this was an April Fools joke, but was so well done that I was beginning to wonder until the very end. Love the video, I am a fan of the GoBots series, and do feel that it was and often remains underappreciated. Its problem isn't that it was bad, just that Transformers was so much greater.

at 3.42 that Cy-Kill model kit is a recoloured Mospeda Blowsperior Ride Armour. One more thing that really should have been part of a Robotech license but Harmony Gold secured the rights too late.

I wish they'd bring back some of the Gobots characters. Crasher was a great female character. With the likes of IDW so desperate to be PC I don't know why they don't use her with the Decepticons rather than keep forcing in new characetrs like Wingblade and Victorinox.

My fav Go-bot was Zero. He was like Starscream, an evil powerhungry backstabber. Except, this guy actually deserved to win (if only cause Cy-Kill was so lame)
