I'm so amazed realizing how color choice made huge difference to the overall aesthetic of Super, like you mean we could've had much more if it wasn't for the direction of colors.
I hope the movie doesn't become a Goku movie, everything there is perfect for Gohan, also, they should have ditched the Goku clothes in Gohan at the end of super, he should have participated with the Saiyaman costume, something so basic about the character and they got it wrong.
@@alenasenie6928 never really cared for Great Saiyaman, thought it was a little too corny by half.. but the green and black wasn't bad. I like him in his orange or purple uniforms.
God that 80s-90s Anime Aesthetic will always be the GOAT look for DragonBall. While I love the Broly movie's art Honestly whenever Im lookin thru all the amazing art of that era it makes me wish current DragonBall pulled what MegaloBox did, where they kept a 90s Aesthetic but w/ Modern work done to amplify it. Great Video!
Seriously, they look like runway models and then proceed to go full broly with Kale All I wanted was for the Saiyan women to at least look like tomboy Videl.... Which is best Videl
This is why I mostly watch 90's anime. Don't get me wrong there are very nice modern artstyle's out there but they are rare. To much computer generated art destroys the experience for me. Maybe if I grew up with it I wouldn't notice but I grew up with oldschool sadly I can't bring myselve to like Super. Maybe if the story was good but that's not the case either.
@@silentslayergaming8469 actually he's right I honestly think a mix of DBZS & Dbz would be the best mix a Newer animation with an older style like the physique & Expressions of Dbz & Expressions & Physique of Super fighting scenes for Dbz Physique resting Physique for Dbzs or just have specific snap shots for old Dbz Physique every now & then When Emphasised on the Body while fighting Expressions of Dbz mixed with Dbzs to make more expressive depending have more older Dbz Expressions than Super but depending on the scene more Super Expressions other than that more shading Closer to OG DBZ & Better lighting for Characters
I couldnt disagree more. His version of caulifla looked HORRIBLE. Literally disgusts me. Caulifla and kefla are my two favorite characters introduced into super. The fact that he increased her mass is just a deal break entirely for me. His interpretation of caulifla is shameful at best in my opinion.
It takes more than art style to improve the direction of current Super, just read the manga and you'll constantly raise your eyebrows, roll your eyes and scratch your head with the questionable take in the Moro and Granola arc
Yeah I would like that too especially for other animes as well but like all things they must change and evolve at some point. The old must go so the new can flourish
@@Taima I think UI looks better with the modern aura, this other one is very dbz and cool for it, but it doesn't capture the feel of ultra Instinct. It makes it look like just another saiyan transformation
No, that shiny aura of ultra instinct resembles godly strength of goku in a godly state of mind and body That's why I was very disappointed in the last art these guys made His godlike fighting style wouldn't look same without that aura
I really like how the Ultra Instinct redraw looked, since Ultra Instinct is a Technique and not a Transformation, (I'm pretty sure) the aura that looks more similar to when they flared their Ki in their base form but more violent due to the heat the technique gives off makes complete sense and brings it together, story-wise and just visually. Very pleasing.
The aura issue was really interesting to see broken down. I personally really like that the auras for the newer, godly forms are heavier and thicker. It always gave me a sense that the energy was more powerful, or perhaps “more concentrated” is a better way of putting it. However, even I can admit that Super definitely went overboard with them, Ultra Instinct being the prime example. I think the approach taken of more classic aura designs with a large variation in colors compared to the classics worked well… to a point. SSJB Kaio Ken easily looked the best in my opinion, Goku Black’s looked good, the little we saw of Trunks was alright, but Ultra Instinct… Personally, I think the redone UI aura was an example of going too far in the other direction. It was made so simplistic, that it really did just look like a standard SSJ aura colored different. For better or worse, UI has one of the most unique auras in the series, and losing all of those unique qualities leaves me feeling more than a little disappointed. Even a different design for the energy outline would’ve helped it feel more distinct, but instead we got “SSJ aura but white.” I can’t help but feel like there was some missed opportunity here, I don’t know. TL;DR, someone with no art skills rambles about art.
I totally agree with you! Personally for me the best thing about the whole Super design choices is the auras, I know they tend to be lackluster in execution but the effort they went through to differentiate then is at least worth nothing, the fire of the SSGod, the comet-like particles of the UI omen, or the eerie aura of SSRose are small details that I really enjoyed and praise from time to time, I think it helps A LOT to make the transformations feel different, just like back on the day when SS2 had a lot more sparks than SS1.
that last point about drawing skills is irrelevant, you don't need to know how to draw in order to criticize art! (especially considering your point is excellent)
I love how these LOOK like DBZ instead of what people THINK original DBZ looked like. A lot of people’s Z redraws look way too polished to be 90s anime
probably not because how they made anime back then had a lot of different components thrown into it that took a lot of time. Knowing corporations they don’t like taking their time
Honestly, the new art style introduced in DBS Broly might just be Toei's signature style from now on. The design has also been applied to One Piece and it's such a joy to look at. Color pops out, the looser design helps the animators a bunch, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the design style goes beyond Dragon Ball and One Piece to other Toei series.
@@shawnsuckstm3353 its going to sound weird, but imo the new art style makes the characters look young and not as mature. I think it works well for characters like goten and trunks, but for the majority I would rather them be drawn and animated in the Z movie era of designs where they look older and more adult-like.
@@Jsleeze9951 In my opinion, the Shintani style captures the OG classic feeling and style of Dragon Ball. But I do like Buu Saga style. P.S: Your opinión isn’t weird at all!
what I love about your "redraws" videos is how you always explain things about the art style and differences... would be easier to just trash-talk the artists, like everybody love to do when is about DBS in comparisson to DBZ... good seeing artist standing up for others artists
This video only makes DB super much worse in comparison. Now, not only we know that DBS animation SUCKS, turns out that the art style and other related choices they made is also poor. I love this video.
wow!!! Everyone did absolutely incredible but 8:52 was my favorite!! I'm a huge fan of 90's anime and I love the color pallettes back then and grainy texture to the art, instead of the clean digital and washed out look anime has nowadays.
The colors, shading, line art... everything looked better. Anime in general I think has developed this odd plastic/shiny and muted look over the past 2 decades
@@BananaPhoPhilly right! its missing depth and darker tone colors. im not sure if theyre aiming for a younger audience with bright colorful colors or TVs in general with today's technology. i just realized that i miss the old dragon ball. it was darker and more serious compared to today, instead they went ahead and dumb down goku. its just sad how kids are growing up too soft nowadays.
The problem with DBS' animation is that IMO it's too shiny and glossy looking. Edit : For those who aren't aware, DO NOT CLICK on link spam. I agree. I prefer the shintani style they used for the DBS broly movie. The drawings are simple. The colours are really vivid and pop out. And it allows for better and smoother animations.
Can't wait to see this art all over Instagram, posted by an infinite amount of DB pages that are copying each other In all seriousness, this is some outstanding work
Holly crap 14:46 that zamasu looks like the best thing I’ve ever seen. That dark glow is the way modern dbz should have gone to bring it to the next level
@@Kenar.E For real. Always confused why they made everyone so scrawny looking, this is supposed to be a story about the strongest fighters and entities of the entire universe and beyond
"Never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it." What I wouldn't give to see the whole DBS series in this art style...
I just hate how so many modern anime look like plastic. Why is everyone’s face shiny? That’s why I loved the tournament of power’s look. Felt like what DBZ really would’ve been in the new era
One reason might be that it looks modern. If you browse a random selection of anime you can most likely find the once created recently by looking for this style. It might just be nothing more than a message: "Hey look this is a new product."
These stills are absolutely magical. Hats off to you guys. Yall captured the vicious essence of Z while properly troubleshooting the issues with bringing the art style forward. 11/10.
Something about that old 90's look will always resonate with me, it's so good and so lively. I never realized how much the de-muscling of the cast bothered me until I got to the first Universe tournament. I know it's not the end of the world but something about seeing the whole cast with bodies made for fighting as well as the old color pallets used for DBS : Broly really brings back the kinetic power in each shot and frame. Also THANK YOU for aging Trunks and Goten, I can't stand them still looking like small children with the years passing.
All i want before i go from this planet for ever is an AI that can transform the entire dragon ball series to a certain style, specially Super to the greatest Z episodes.
I didn't have a problem with the art style in the ToP or Broly movie, but I definitely had a problem with the artstyle in the first few arcs. I'm just glad it improved.
I've always thought Z looked better, although super definitely got a lot better around the ToP arc. I'm not a huge fan of the really heavy lines they use in ToP but at least it is distinctive and it looked better than the early stuff (even the rushed schedule aside). Mark did some really great work here picking up on some of the reasons *why* I like Z more - things I probably couldn't have picked up on myself. Funnily enough, one of the things it really makes me ache for is for them to finally release a high quality version with the English dub (including score). Dragon boxes with at least the option for funimation dubs and Faulconer score, *please*.
2:25 it was explained in db that saiyan stays kids for a long time and then suddenly there growth sprouts explodes and they grow up faster, and also they dont age fast too.
I love that drawing of Frost, because it makes him look as evil as he actually is. The way frost was drawn in the anime isn't bad but he didn't look evil to me. Your drawing of him also gives him that evil tone but doesn't make him look as evil as Frieza which is good because I think we can all agree that Frieza is way more evil than Frost
Frost not "looking" evil might've been the original intention. I mean, remember, when we're first introduced to him, he's presented as a good person, the exact opposite of Frieza. Sure, later we find out he's a scumbag just like Frieza, but when we're initially introduced, he's pretending to be a good guy because that's the persona he puts on for Universe 6.
@@beancheesedip8337 but that's when he is in his first few forms, once he gets in his final form, it's revealed that he is evil, so I feel like he should look evil in his final form
@@toastytuber3596 fair enough, I was just saying that I think the original intention might've been to subvert the audience expectation, but I see what you're saying.
looks like a layer of noise, a transparent grunge texture set to about 5% opacity, and 3-4 passes that target tone and color balance. Specifically bumping up the blacks and muting some of the colors on the brighter end of the spectrum. All totally doable with adjustment layers, just gotta poke at it till you get "the look" right.
The colours have always been my biggest gripe with Dragon Ball Super's art style. I felt so validated when you made it a recurring theme in the video haha.
@@davidmicheaels343 the start was.... But by the end it got better... But still z had better art style!(note the art style was better but animation is better in super.)
@@shreybhardwaj6137 I can't even say the animation is better even if it probably is. I'm no expert but I liked how the characters moved in the OG and DBZ more then in super.
I just want muscles. The grainy, gritty look you talked about would be a close second, but if they insist on everything being bright and shiny, I at least want characters with muscles.
Tbh I think its more about getting the right proportions and the scale of the physique right. Dbz had muscles but they much very aesthetically pleasing because they paid attention to symmetry and proportion of the physique.
@@Amirifiz interesting but not preferred for me. The blue hair with blue eyebrows and blue eyes were too much for me, he looked too plain. That light purple felt unique
Not gonna lie, the DBZ artstyle looks awesome compared to what we got in super, the Broly movie was pretty lit tho and it actually had pretty damn good animation and art, unlike many episodes in the super series which kinda threw me off a lot, it would look much better in this old artstyle
All of you are incredible artists and each approach achieved the 90's style almost perfectly, great job! Regarding the coloring in Super, I think that the very bright and vibrant style is a thing that a lot of new animes are falling into, for example, the new shaman king anime looks extremely bright to me and that ends up being a little distracting. I would love if in new anime they used more filters to make it a little darker, more pleasing to the eyes (so many people like 90's anime aesthetics for this reason)
Perfect re-designs for every single pic. Z's style is Zeno level, while Super's is Oolong level. I was born in '92, so as a little kid in the late 90s I grew up watching Z and thinking about how cool it looked stylistically. Was hyped when Super was announced years back, but seeing the art style change to make everyone look like cheap knockoff action figures of themselves really disappointed me. Yeah the story wasn't great in Super, but the style that made the series as popular as it is would have dramatically softened the blow for me.
Yup Super was a dissapointment in all the episodes only 3. Were amazingly done. And by that i mean not like a few scenes but the entire episode. And all 3 were in the ToP.
@@shotto_z4790 Yeah I know, just lamenting how bad most of Super from the beginning up to the end of the T.O.P. was. I like what they're doing in the Granola arc
11:49 I love how even though it was Capcom who was influenced by Akira Toriyama; Capcom has delivered some of the most iconic and timeless sound effects to ever exist which are used in almost every content creators' soundbank. Including Toei. That chime was Megaman X5's Start screen. X's 1st armor was heavily influenced by Saiyan/ Frieza Force armor, same goes for alot of the concept art at the time.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. There’s just something more lively about the original Dragon Ball Z style. It looks more warm, more (as weird as this sounds) life like. Ever since Yo! Son Goku And His Friends Return and Hatchiyack, the art is more crisp, but doesn’t look as lively. Idk maybe it’s just me.
My god, ITS BEAUTIFUL! It looks exactly how I’d imagined super would look like if it had dbz color scheme. I really like it, much more than the original super art style
This video really puts into perspective how much the series and Toriyama's art style in general has changed over the years. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I must say this era of art is my favorite the series has ever looked. DBS: Broly was the best bit of Dragonball animation we've had in years, just amazing to watch the whole time, even the calm scenes. The characters were way too skinny and cartoony in Super to me, I legit had no idea Goten and Trunks were supposed to be preteens, they look like 5 year olds as stated in the video. And Gohan looks like he reverted back to his preteen days, wtf? Great work on the vid guys, the art was awesome and I wish they'd go back to the DBZ or even DBS: Broly style again.
Yeah I get what you mean. Personally I think they also perfectly replicate Z's best looking episodes, but Z was also very inconsistent in the way episodes looked so I think you're right on that
Man..sometimes i forget how absolutely mouth water DBZ’s style is. Seriously. The muted colors, the auras, the better anatomy and slight design choices make for a MUCH MUCH more appealing art style overall
4:48 Props to you for this, most of these types of videos shit on super hard, so it’s glad to see people making it clear that it’s just to admire that classic 90’a style, and consider how it’d look in this modern age of animation :)
Yeah that’s what I like about mark is that he’s fair and even when he gets stuff wrong he apologises and makes up for it. I think a good example would be the series of videos similar to this which where about fixing some bad art in super and explaining why that happened.
All of this looks incredible, the only complaint I have about the art work is the ultra instinct goku aura. I feel that the man himself is drawn to perfection, but the aura doesn't seem as over the top as I feel it should've, maybe something similar to the original super saiyan transformation would've been better, I don't know. Keep up the amazing work!
@@TheBluePhoenix008 I think that was just a meme on their end. I remember Ajay saying that he does use a tablet but he used his mouse instead because they thought it would make a good meme
You guys made me remember where we all came from and how far we come with this series. Love you for that, all the characters looked amazing and definitely hit the mark👏👏
I thought Broly just looked better because it was a movie that they had put more time and resources into......dang, that one change makes such a difference
ssj god ssj goku is astonishing 8:50 and i want to hear the average "super is better" talking shit about it, saying that it's not better than the original..
