If you are interested in keeping bees in Layens hives, or maybe have already started using Layens hives, and have extra Langstroth equipment on hand, you can use those Langstroth boxes to make Layens hives at little expense. I'll show you a simple and reversible method for installing Layens frames into Langstroth equipment.
#langstroth #layenshive #beekeeping #beehive #horizontalhive
I grew up on a farm on the edge of the Nebraska sandhills. A cattle ranch that bears our family name, founded in the late 1800s by my ancestors, is still owned and worked by my cousin. Life events have put me in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area in middle America, where my wife and I have raised our two kids. It's in this environment that I work to make as sustainable a life as I can, converting much of our backyard to grow food, including a garden, fruit trees and bee hives.
I attempt to use natural methods, as much as is possible, in my gardening and beekeeping. I garden organically and continue to learn to work with the soil and the plants, without the use of chemical supplements, herbicides or pesticides, to improve our harvest. Our honey bees are sourced from local colonies through swarms, trap-outs and cut-outs, and are kept, using treatment-free, natural methods, in Layens horizontal hives.

I’m watching this again. I’m picking up ideas on building these from my older Langstroth boxes. It will be easy to expand them for twenty frames and then insulate the boxes and put an outside cover of plywood. The bottom could have a hinge to clean it out of wastes. Th biggest job would be to build new tops. I’ll have what you built to get the bees building up and into the new box. Split them from the original and move them to the new location. Then let them grow and move them into the larger Layens box.

Layen beehive allows bees to live stronger and provides bees with stronger immune system simply because bees 🐝 simulate their lives in nature ! Thanks for your tips

Can you go into the subject of moving from lang to layens? All my equipment is lang, but im building layens now and next spring, will split a couple colonies with genetics that seem to be doing far better than other colonies on my yard. Im building on 3 50 frame conversion hives now that will accept a lang standing on its end, but the width of layens. I also have 50 or so spacers cut that will get screwed to the side bar to fill the gap between the layens top bar and the lang side bar. What i am not planning on doing is adding a shallow lang frame to the deep frames, or a 2x4 to take up the gap between the the bottom, now side bar of the lang, to the hive wall. Is there an issue in not filling that gap other than the bees building down off the layen top bar?

I'm considering a video to discuss different conversion methods, but don't have a lot of experience except with the conversion hive that I built. As for your question, I'm kind of a visual learner but if I understand your explanation correctly then your concern is with the extra space at the bottom of the hive, below the Layens frames - is that correct? If so then I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's possible the bees might build on the bottom bars - or even build cross-comb below the frames (both of which have happened to me) but with the depth of the Layens frames that hasn't been a frequent issue and it's not a big problem to clean up.

@@SuburbanSodbuster correct, the bottom of the layens frames and to the side of the lang deep frame, building off the top, between the lang frame and the hive wall, attaching comb to the hive wall.

@SuburbanSodbuster thank you. My brother runs 10 frames, and I think with my pulled layens frames, I can easily convert him using this setup. Find the queen, put her in the bottom with the layens frames with a Queen excluder between the layens on the bottom and the old brood frames up top. Everyone will eventually move down. It's easier to deal with, in my opinion, than building a bunch of jigs and spacers for a layens hive. I appreciate your reply.

Sweet video, have you had any issues with moisture or lack of ventilation?
@SuburbanSodbuster
@SuburbanSodbuster Год назад
Sorry for the slow response. I haven't had any real issues except for one case. In general the bees do a good job of managing ventilation in the hive, unless we mess around too much with their designs. In my 12 frame hive they seemed to have no problem, last summer, until I put in the 12th frame - which completely blocked ventilation through the lid. Suddenly their ventilation didn't work as it did before and they began bearding immediately. This was in my 12 frame hive with the single center entrance - I think having two entrances; once near each end, could have helped with ventilation in this case.

I'm building a 61 frame Layens bee bed was planning on using it for making the conversion I'm thinking about wintering them in there by stacking two deeps then just some blocking

Great idea. For the space 2 inch at the bottom you could lay blueboard insulation. That would provide a little insulation and fill the gap.

People are constantly asking about getting Nucs and having to try to transfer them into a Layens... If one were to do this; do you think it might work if one put the 5 frame nuc into a 10 frame Langstroth, let them build it out and build up numbers, space out the Leyens frames in this, so that there are 11 frames and 6 1/4" gaps between frames; then placed the Langstroth brood chamber on top, to allow the bees to move and draw down into the Layens to move the brood down there? To me it seems simple. It's kind of Nadiring like one does with Warré hives, to allow the bees to build and move down. I see where that extra gap between some of the layens frames might possibly be an issue. But... trying to think of something that may sound complicated but ultimately be a little more simple and less work than trying to cut or twist or rotate or screw Langstroth frames with plastic foundation and live bees on them. One of those "lets take a step back and think AROUND the obstacles; instead of strugging to go over, or dig THROUGH the middle of them" It may not be the best. But... maybe it is an option?

I've thought about trying something like this, whether with Layens on top or underneath. Once concern I have is that the frames would be turned 90 degrees from one box to the other; I don't know if that would be an issue for the bees to move across. Another approach might be to screw Langstroth top bars to the top of the Layens frames so that the frames could be oriented in the same direction. Layens frames could actually be hung next to the nuc frames this way in a double-deep box. Then once the Layens frames are built out the Langstroth bars could be removed and the frames put into a Layens hive. This might result in some wild comb on the ends, but I don't think that would be a big issue.

@SuburbanSodbuster thank you. I had thought about the Langstroth and Layens frames being perpendicular. I imagine that might have them turned around a bit. But as long as there's adequate bees space between frames. And a good reference poind fir the bees to festooned from (ridge, popsicle stick, starter strip, etc; it shouldn't bee too much of an impediment, I don't think. I do like the idea of screwing or zip-tying some Layens frames to some top bars that are cut to Langstroth lengths. One could cut some simple top bars our of pallet wood. That would be one way to keep everything all lined up. And seems simply enough. More than one way to cook an egg, I suppose.

Excellent video. As I'm getting older the Langstroth hives and boxes are just too heavy anymore. This is a great idea for the gradual transfer to the Layens. Also, my boxes are getting old. I'll likely be building Layens hives to put the new converted frames into. Question. What is the typical length of a Layens hive. What about building on long enough for two colonies. Then put a divider board inside to keep them separated. Two hives in one.
@SuburbanSodbuster
@SuburbanSodbuster Год назад
Lengths can vary; I prefer a 20 frame hive. In the Layens hive, space can be reduced, as needed, using a divider board. So far I haven't had a colony outgrow 20 frames. It is possible to keep 2 colonies in one large hive with divider boards. I have kept 2 smaller colonies in a 20 frame hive on a temporary basis. I do have one 30 frame hive, "Taj Mahive" (the large white hive behind me at the beginning of the video) in which I regularly keep two colonies.

@@SuburbanSodbuster I'm looking at this route. Once I build the box It's not moving. I want to build several of these over winter so that I can start getting rid of the Langstroth hives. Like I said, the boxes are just too heavy anymore for me. I like keeping bees so why stop. Just change the technique.

This may be a dumb question. If you make a layens from the lang boxes, can you super them with lang mediums as they grow? Of coarse layens frames would be modified to have opening on top of frames like Lang’s . I ask because if you did super the lang super frame are going the opposite direction.
@SuburbanSodbuster

Some people do put supers over Layens frames, but I'm not sure how well it would work with the frames in perpendicular orientation. It could be worth experimentation.

I took two Langstroth deeps using your method here, then ripped them down the middle (through the handles) and added a side and bottom along with building a lid. It perfectly fits 6 Layen's frames and the best part is it already has propolis and bee smells. Makes 2 swarm traps.
@SuburbanSodbuster
@SuburbanSodbuster 7 месяцев назад
I had thought about cutting the ends off boxes and connecting them, like I did with my conversion hive, to make a longer hive. But I hadn't thought about cutting them in half to make swarm traps (or nucs). Great idea!

Thank you. I have 3 Layden's hives and we had a hard winter and I lost all the hives and had to start all over this year. Now I don't think it was necessarily the winter that got my bees, I live on the Utah Arizona border and winters are not that cold. I think it was mosture because they died in November. I think it was the pillows I but on top of the frames for insulation didn't allow the moisture to rise. I will not put insulation on top of the frames this winter. I have ventilation holes in the roof, but since the Layden's frames fit next to one another and the bees propolize them together, including the end board, do you think I need some ventilation in the frame's'? What's your experience?
@SuburbanSodbuster
@SuburbanSodbuster Год назад
Do you have a gap at the bottom of the divider board? With a ventilated roof I've had good success overwintering with a pillow on top of the frames and just a gap at the bottom of the divider for excess moisture to vent out. To be honest, I think the danger of moisture in a hive is overstated - it's really a problem if the moisture condenses at the top and drips down onto the cluster. But that condensation is only likely where there are areas of rapid thermal transfer, and the pillow on top of the frames helps to mitigate that. If you haven't already, I recommend watching my video on winter survival: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uYm1rrXCfiQ.html. But the answer above doesn't help with the question of why your bees died, and I'm afraid I can't give a definitive answer about that. Based on my own experience, I don't think the nature of the Layens frames or the insulation on top of them is a cause.

When I was still keeping Langstroth hives I built a bee vacuum that utilized a Langstroth box sandwiched between a bottom that accepted the vacuum hose and a top that held the shop vac head. I have been trying to figure out how to convert it to use with my now Layens hives, and this is the perfect solution! Thank you for sharing this idea!

Interesting video, could also use the space at the bottom to add an oil try after you added some outer support strips and wire to keep the bees from falling into the oil trays. It would also involve thing thru a closable entrance for the tray. The oil trays can be helpful with small hive beatles and to watch for mites.

Someone wanting to do this could also use a Langstroth screened bottom with a tray, or IPM board, without having to build it into the hive box.
