Transgender kids are just kids after all | Amber Briggle | TEDxTWU

A self-identified feminist mom tells her story of coming to recognize her son for who he is rather than who she assumed he was based on his sex assigned at birth. Gender non-conformity is something often championed by feminists, but trans identity is something else entirely.
Amber Briggle is a small business owner, a community volunteer, a political junkie, and the mother of two incredible children -- Lulu (age 3) and MG (age 8), who have brought many surprises along the way -- including MG's revelation at the age of 2 that he was mislabeled at birth and identified not as a girl, but as a boy. Through trial by fire, Amber has quickly and earnestly become an advocate for transgender rights, helping her son navigate the world of boy/girl while simultaneously challenging society's gender stereotypes. She is also a board member of the League of Women Voters of Texas, a proud member of Rotary International, and she has a rescue dog named Bluebell who still hasn't figured out how to fetch Amber a glass of wine, but they're working on it.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I'm a 75 year old trans person. I survived but I really don't know how it happened. There was no support. I was angry, very angry. I was secretive. I was always who I am. It sure would have been nice if my parents, siblings, neighborhood, school, church could have known who I was and allowed me to be who I was rather than be a square peg forced into a round hole. I wouldn't have been kicked out of my house, kicked out of school, and a failure on many different levels. My success? I survived. I am now who I want to be.

As an eighteen year old trans person, I am incredibly impressed, Juli. You did what I'm trying to do, but you did it in unimaginably worse circumstances than I'm doing it. I wish you didn't have to go through all of that, and I'm so sorry that you did. Yet you succeeded, survived. Your story gives me hope.

I was in my early twenties and started transition about 45 years ago. I remember because it was before Watergate. It was difficult. The thing we had to do was to simply move to a new location and start over. College then, and now, is a good place to transition if you are over 18--lots of health services. The mother in the talk, by affirming her love, is allowing the child to be spared so much useless suffering.

As a parent to a child who is transitioning I only know from the parental p.o.v and wish you had the support back then. I'm 35 and lucky to have the children I do. Thank you, thank you thank you. I'm a 14 year old transgender boy, and I'm about to come out. When I told my parents I was a boy when I was two and a half, they didn't believe me. They didn't met me be authentic. They continuously blew me off. Now, puberty already started for me and I'm suffering with dysphoria. Thank you for listening to your son before it was too late.

At 21, he attends college away for the first time because he wanted to be on his own. Sex, what is between ones legs, is determined by chromosomes in the first trimester. Gender, what is in the brain, is determined by hormone levels in the late second and on into the third trimester. Usually they are somewhat in sync but sometimes not. When they are not a trans child is born.

Wonderful talk, I love how this mother is fighting for a better world for her son. Her message to advocate is especially important, all people deserve fair treatment in society and equal access to opportunity. I am a 13 year old transgender male. My parents say its just a phase but. I don't think phases last years. I've know since i was 8 that I was different, I kept it inside. When I was 10 I was scrolling a long my suggestions and there was this video called "I am Transgender" so it sounded interesting. I didn't know what Transgender meant but I watched. By the end I was bawling my eyes out, not because I was sad. Because I found a name and definition of what I was. I asked my best friend to call me a him. But I told nobody else. I got sadder by the week. When I was 11 I first came out as Trans* on Facebook, my mom told me to delete it. Then when I was 12 I gave her a letter crying. It explained what I was feeling. She still didn't listen. That same year a week after my 12 birthday. I started self harming. Really badly. My older brother found out and threatened to tell. So I stopped. Now mostly everyone knows me as Jax/ Jaxson. And I am excepted by most of my school. Sadly I am mildly depressed, have anxiety and think about suicide. I never want to kill myself but it just is there. My family still deny to call me Jaxson. But my parents know about my facebook that has my preferred name. I save people every day. I talk them out of suicide. To any one who is struggling. You are not alone. You are loved. If you need help, please kik me: Special_Potato666

What is the difference between being transgender and liking things that the opposite sex usually is more associated with liking?
@nadjadrawssomething1789
@nadjadrawssomething1789 7 лет назад
+herobrine_trolo The difference between a trans person and somebody who has interests in things that are stereotypically for the opposite gender is that a trans person doesn't need to like stereotypical masculine/feminine things. Trans people feel like they are the opposite gender not that they like things the opposite gender usually likes. Imagine you wake up tomorrow and you would be in the body of the opposite sex, and everybody would view you as the opposite gender. You would still identify as the gender you are now, would you? That's how trans people feel. (Sorry for my mediocre english.)
@smesaric
@smesaric 7 лет назад
Why do trans people want to be the opposite gender if they still like the same stuff? Gender is just physical so why do they care if people call them a he or she?
@puddypudding9609
@puddypudding9609 7 лет назад
herobrine_trolo pronouns are very important. She is used for girl and he for boys and you have the connection, each time you hear someone calling you he. You have the feeling that they see you as a boy, because they do and its feels wrong because you know you are a girl (vice versa). Its the same as if someone called you a goat, it feels weird and wrong.

Hey, I totally get this. I'm also 13 and I currently identify as nonbinary and have been exploring the different nonbinary identities for while, trying to find 'me' in one. I'm too afraid that people are going to think it's just a phase or that I'm just being influenced by the people I hang around, so much so that I have told almost no one. I think I've told my best friend who has helped me through this so far and casually hinted to a couple other people I trust. It's seriously good to know there are others out there like me.

It's titled, "Education Is None of Your Business." I describe it by saying, "Consider these words from retired superintendent, Dr. Jeffrey Turner, “The real challenge for education today is we are running a 19th-century system, using 20th-century accountability, and expecting 21st-century skills.” Politicians have unsuccessfully tried to force education to fit into a business model, but kids aren’t widgets; and to that end, I say, “Education is none of your business.” To overcome, we must have innovative district and campus administrators and teacher leaders seeking to push past the tipping point. The session begins by highlighting why schools have operated an institutionalized factory model for well over a hundred years with politicians and big business interests mandating education to fit into an obsolete factory model. After an examination of how education policy got to this point, participants are challenged to consider what is needed to tip the scales from the heavy-handed “business model” of education to a model designed to meet the needs of the 21st century through the creation of content, not the consumption of it." I expect it to go online in about three months (end of August).?!
@ScarletFox039
@ScarletFox039 8 лет назад
Fascinating. I think that goes hand-in-hand with trying to standardize education across the board when we already know that everyone learns differently and has different interests. I think we've all said in our schooling days "why do I need to learn when I know I don't understand it and I'm never going to use it?" For me it was a philosophy course I was required to take in college for a computer science degree. It was apart of making my education "well-rounded." To this day, I can't even remember what was even said in that class or what grade I got in it. I also think that one potential way to at least solve the problem of everyone learns differently is to have more engaging education. I've seen a few TED talks about how a child can learn and retain information way better from video games than from reading a text book as one example. I'll have to check out your talk, thanks for sharing!

Right now it's not that understood and I'd want to explain that stuff to my child myself, not have some random mom explaining it when I maybe didn't feel like it was the right time or something. It is my belief that people can be born with the wrong sex organs. I went to school with a boy who with the exception of his privates, he was a girl. We are not talking about that guy who wants to be a 6 year old girl or the woman who wants to be a cat. Yes, I am familiar with those stories. It is one thing to be born in the wrong body and another thing altogether to have a fetish. What you want to do is to try to use those extreme cases to justify your prejudice. Wish I'd had her as a mom... at age 5 I told my step mom that I was a girl yeah, but a boy as well. She laughed. From then until age 14, I kept it secret and developed an eating disorder. I only understood binary genders back then, and came out as transgender to some friends then, and my good friends don't care about my gender, they love me for my personality... I have faith in kids peers more than most adults! As a now out and proud non-binary individual, I have encountered people who do not understand how inappropriate it is to ask genital questions, and people ask if I have both... which is insulting to many people, including the intersex community. My grandmother thankfully thinks the world needs unique people and I gain acceptance from her now, but the lack of support I had as a child and the lack of people standing up for me when inappropriate questions arose, just make me so happy for MG and the trans kids today.

XX and XY does not define sex characteristic. A person with XX chromosomes that is feed with testosterone from a fetus state will develop fully male sex characteristics and vice versa. Biology is not something simple and deterministic. The smallest changes can have detrimental effects. Just read this article from Nature (high impact science journal) where the topic of sex characteristics is discussed. www.nature.com/news/sex-redefined-1.16943

@sonoki82 Have you ever been loved by someone who was absolutely certain that you were really someone else, and you just needed to change to fit their expectations, and then you'd be perfect? That's what it's like. That's the kind of love you're suggesting is "real." You say they hate themselves, but you know only one thing about them - you don't know what it's like to be them, and if you're not willing to listen, that says something about you. When you love someone, how they look or what they believe shouldn't matter. What they feel matters. Transition is so many things other than surgery, and the vast majority of people who transition are happy that they did so.

I just had to add this additional statement: As long as you do the "right thing" for your our children, is perfect! (and I really mean the right thing, because each child is a different case) But when you and society (mostly those with some kind of governmental power) try to do the "right thing" for other people's kids, is where real problems starts!

I was so confused that even though both bathrooms where empty i peed my pants i could have used any but the fear of "using the wrong one" was too much for me.

He never talks about it to anyone and I don’t bring it up because I can tell he’s uncomfortable by the topic.

Before I go off into my rant I'd like to say I am transgender. Most people (especially children) who believe they are transgender are confused, I've talked to a number of people and they say the reason is they feel more guyish or girlish; this is NOT a basis for transgenderism. Yes you should dress and act how you prefer but it has taken a negative spotlight to actual transgender people whose brain doesn't match their body due to the overwhelming numbers people believe their are. These numbers are far, far smaller than what social media or misled concepts make them appear to be. It is a real problem for these people that need to transition.

This is unsubstantiated by the facts, and I'm sorry (if you really are trans) that you're dealing with this level of internalized hate. You're just feeding into the catch 22 that is cis people not considering us valid unless we IDed as a child while not considering trans children valid. You really shouldn't speak on topics you know nothing about, and you shouldn't try to erase other people just to make yourself feel more valid. It's revolting.

This TED talk was inspiring and just really reassuring, because I'm a teen and I know I'm nonbinary, or at least I know I'm not a girl, but I'm always seriously afraid to tell even my friends who are out as transgender because maybe people will think it's just a phase, maybe they'll think it's because of the people that I hang out with, maybe I'll lose people I love because they can't accept me, so I have told maybe two people at the most and it's terrifying. I wake up trying to pick gender ambiguous clothing knowing it will make no difference because to the world I am just a little girl and I'm afraid to say otherwise even though I know it isn't true. So the fact that there are trans kids out there younger than me who are accepted is just extremely good to know.

You're not just a little girl. You're a fantastic young nonbinary person who doesn't have to answer to the world if the world refuses to understand. The best part is, however, that large parts of the world DO understand! I'm really proud of you for having told anyone at all. I know it's scary but you will get through this. I can attest, gender ambiguous clothing can be such a freeing experience for us non-binary lot and it really does make a difference. I am here for you.

The idea of sex for any species is a human classification. It is something we use to make sense of how the world around us work and to be able to make progress and develop new tools. The scientists that have spent many many years researching sex characteristics is now strongly doubting the sex binary. This is not feminism, it is biology and science. @Luinta
@Luinta 6 лет назад
You're misinformed. She's not putting this on her child, she's listening to her child. You do know that there are decades of research and work that's been put into understanding trans folk and figuring out what's best for them medically and psychologically right? are you saying your personal ideas carry more weight than professionals, who tend to agree that allowing a child to explore their identity is healthy, and that should they continue with persistent, consistent, and insistent declarations of their gender, it's vital to listen to them to avoid forcing them to undergo the trauma of the wrong puberty, and the irreversible consequences of that? I'll take hte experts to your assumptions any day. This woman should be proud of herself for listening to her child, and being rational about it by talking about hormone blockers, and giving her son enough time to decide for himself, when he's older, how he wants to precede. All she's doing right now is allowing him to be comfortable being himself.

+shane hester Right. Like being an adopted child who does not share similar chromosomal maps with the parents. That child is not a REAL part of the family and must be purged of any such delusions. And if the so-call parents promote the child's feeling of inclusion, we outsiders need to jump in, and fast, and set the parents and child straight on their delusion.

There are a lot of comments asking why they can’t just accept their gender and still like things stereotypically aligned with the opposite gender and as a trans male I thought I’d clear some of it up. *Dysphoria* It’s not just liking gendered things. Some kids are filled with a hate for or extreme discomfort with their genitals and they can’t just accept it. It’s debilitating. And there isn’t just body dysphoria, there’s social dysphoria too, where it almost hurts to be called by the wrong pronouns or name. Dressing up in what you’re expected to wear for your assigned gender is a huge trigger for it. It’s like extreme anxiety around your gender. And the medication for it... is transitioning. Wearing a chest binder. Packing. Tucking. Going on T/estrogen. And why is it a big deal? Three of the things I mentioned can’t do any harm to a child unless you do it very incorrectly, and one is something you won’t start until you’re old enough to choose anyway. So it’s not a big deal, let kids do things that will save them a lot of pain.
@curtisking5138
@curtisking5138 6 лет назад
Ben : Nonsense! Kids do not even know what their genitalia represent except for its use,unless they were told! They are unaware of the concept of gender,and the differences, unless they were told! They are not obsessed with gender identity,unless they were indoctrinated! Children learn by imitating the behaviour to which they are exposed!
