Transgender Women Competing In Sports: LGBT Doctor Analyzes The Scientific Truth
Let’s, in the most respectful way possible, dive into the dicey subject of competing in sports as a transgender female. Instead of purely giving you my opinion, you’ll find this video unique because I’m going to back this up for you with legitimate research publications and scientific literature.
Why am I going to inform you about all of this?
Well, I’m in the LGBT community, gay, a doctor, and I’m definitely a trans ally. I think that this combination allows me to kindly inform you about this topic from an evidence-based approach that allows us to walk in the light of the truth. We can look at what science says and also be polite about the subject, how there are natural biological differences between transgender and cisgender women. There’s a very important distinction in the types of events we talk about, that are vastly different:
1. There are transgender women who play sports in non-competitive settings, like a local intramural soccer team for example
Vs
2. A legitimately competitive event where there is a high value based upon how you place. Examples include a high school state championship where scholarships are on the line, a college NCAA tournament, or an Olympic trial competition.
It’s a real thing, There are cisgender women who consistently show up to their high school state championship and lose first place to a transgender female.
Diving into the science, starting from the beginning, a fetus with XY chromosomes produces and is exposed to higher levels of testosterone in the womb. Right off the bat, there is a biological difference. Interestingly enough, studies show that before puberty, the natural athletic abilities between boys and girls are relatively similar.
During puberty, testosterone levels multiply 20-fold and are in concentrations 15-times higher than females.
Testosterone creates many changes In the male adolescent body-ones that you may associate are typically the changes you see in puberty, like deepening of the voice and growth of body hair.
Testosterone also influences many other roles behind the scenes that give physical athletic advantages. These Roles include regulating bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, and red blood cell production.
Attributes like larger skeletal structures, larger muscles, increased cardiovascular and respiratory functions, as well as a higher power to weight ratios, give biologically cis-gender males natural athletic advantages. This is present amongst both elite and non-elite calibers.
That’s not to say that there are incredible female athletes, there absolutely are. We know of many. There are probably female athletes that could kick my butt in every sport across the board.
But when we compare males to females in similar calibers, like amateurs vs amateurs, and superstars vs superstars, males naturally have an athletic edge based on their development.
Studies show that after a year of testosterone suppression, there is a certain degree of advantages that are lost, like slightly less thigh muscle mass than before.
But overall, there are also many bio-physiological differences that do not go away when a transgender woman has settled into her transition.
For example, transgender females who went through puberty as a male exposed to high levels of testosterone still have skeletal bone sizes and densities that provide an athletic edge.
Studies show that transitioned transgender women on average still have 25% more grip strength.
Other aspects like taller heights, as well as longer limb lengths and hand span, provide a natural advantage.
This study came out with a very interesting conclusion that the number of general advantages that transgender women have actually varied by sport.
In my opinion, pointing this out isn’t transphobic. Ignoring this is cisgender female-phobic. Ignoring it is stripping away cis females' opportunities to succeed.
Each sport should make up its own rules about transgender women competing, because, every sport is different. There are some sports where transgender females have much more of an advantage than in other sports, like weightlifting for example. You have much more of a competitive edge if you have been exposed to testosterone growing up.
This is important because cisgender females deserve a fair playing ground just as much as transgender women deserve their rights to co-exist and integrate peacefully in society.

He's definitely downplaying the muscle mass reduction, after 2 years of hrt (which is the time required to be on hrt to be allowed to play competitively) it does level out to about the same performance levels, and by that time, with testosterone blockers, trans women have lower levels of testosterone than cis women, as for the "biological advantages" the stars of every sport have always been people with huge biological advantages, Michael Phelps has enormous biological advantages to anyone else, because of the way he was born, he's super tall, has a massive wingspan, and huge hands and feet, he's basically a superhuman born with a body built for swimming, he obviously has a massive innate biological advantage but no one says he shouldn't be able to compete. Sports has never been fair, no matter how hard they try, even if they put in 10 times the effort, it doesn't matter if they've dedicated their whole life to basketball, you'll never see a short dude in the NBA, it's not fair, but no one cares about the NBA being fair to short people because it's the nature of sports, there will always be people with advantages, and a slight AVERAGE height difference is nothing to ban the whole group of people for. Even then what's the solution? You definitely can't have them compete with the gender assigned at birth, because trans men would would absolutely destroy the cis women, they would essentially be doping the whole time because they're on a high level of testosterone. If trans women had such an advantage then it would show, which it turns out that trans women perform worse than mose cis women because they are literally on the anti muscle drug, all those headlines that you read, if you look a little further into what happened, a lot of them placed in dead last, that girl in the pregar u video he used got 8th, the trans woman in the competition only got 6th, she wouldn't have even won anyways.

As a member of the LGBT community and a long time coach of both male and female elite athletes, I have extensive first hand experience that the argument that biological males have no inherent advantage over females is absolutely 100% incorrect. Even the very best of the female athletes I have coached, who were absolutely incredible athletes, wouldn't have stood a chance against the males. If forced to compete against them, they might as well have just quit, which would be a terrible shame. I'm glad to see a reasonable and rational approach to this subject. Much appreciated.

My concern is also the issue of biological women getting hurt while trying to compete against trans women who have been through male puberty. Sure not all sports are contact sports but it could go terribly wrong. I don't think males or females fully understand how difference there really is. There was a post on reddit about a guy discussing how he would arm wrestle/wrestle with his GF and admitted he wasn't going full out, so she said she wanted him to use his full strength. But then she lost every fight they had, the arm wrestle was easy for him and he could easily pin her... They were both shocked about it and it opened up an interesting discussion around it and how males do try and regulate how much stregths they use against females when playing around like that.

This is an incomplete picture though. People like to point to Lia Thomas winning the 500 Free at the NCAA Championship as some kind of sign of the unfair advantage, but if you go to her SwimCloud page you can see that that win (4:33.24) isn't anywhere close to her personal best, set before she transitioned (4:18.72). It's also nowhere close to Katie Ledecky's personal best of 4:24.06. In fact, Ledecky has pretty consistently been beating Lia Thomas' championship time since she Ledecky was 17; Thomas was 25 when she won her championship. As you said, this one facet of trans rights is not an excuse for bigotry; it's simply trying to make good policies that are based on objective facts derived from the latest good data. And who knows? Maybe as this is studied more, the data will show that trans-women don't really have as big of an advantage or different hormone therapies can make sports more fair. @zulaadler7179 2 года назад
The biological reality is that testosterone makes you a whole lot stronger, trans women have none, and trans men have a whole lot yet trans men are forced to compete in women's sports while having the strength typical of men which is very unfair, and trans women loose most of their muscle mass making it unfair for them to compete with men. And before puberty, male and female bodies are essentially indistinguishable, a trans woman who has been on hormone blockers has never been through male puberty and it would be ignorant to say that she still has an advantage, and the only attributes from male puberty that are retained after 2 years of hormone therapy are the voice and height which isn't even an advantage in a lot of sports and can even be a disadvantage in some, so the only legitimate basis for banning a whole group of people is that trans women are tall, and plenty of people are tall yet we don't have nationwide outrage at anyone else being tall.

Natural deviations in physical characteristics are what makes us unique. Thats why only few people can be elite sprinters and that is 100% fair. Unnatural altered characteristics are not. If we allow one group to artificially alter their performance level, for example every weight lifter should be allowed to juice their minds out. It does not matter if the altering goes from a baseline up or downwards from a higher level (like transitioning to a woman). I think it's important that if we are going to have these conversations, then we need to be consistent with how we use identifying terms. If we are going to establish that there is a clear difference between sex and gender, then when we identify groups, we need to be mindful of what it is that we're actually stating. I don't know of a single biologist that would concede that sex is not immutable. If a biological male transitions from a man to a woman, they are still a biological male. The same applied for females that transition. Thus, a biological male cannot become a "transgender female". The sociological argument is that gender is fluid because gender is a social construct. Biology says that sex is immutable. If the goal is to have meaningful dialogue, then It's important that we do not conflate the two.

Dr. Ryan, thanks for a compassionately reasoned explanation of something that gets a disproportionate amount of attention for the number of people affected. And the attention is often at the expense of trans people generally. Thanks you for encouraging people to see that the participation of trans women needs a nuanced perspective rather than an all or nothing attitude. My background is mainly in secondary education. I know that being a part of an athletic team is an important part of many teens’ lives. Although I want trans students to be able to have such an enriching experience, I don’t want it to come at the expense of cis girl athletes. The number of trans girl athletes is certainly very small. I’ve not see national numbers, but the governor of Utah said that out of 75,000 student athletes, there was one trans girl. I suspect that the ratio of high school trans girl athletes is minuscule throughout the nation. I would think that some practical guidelines for each sport-and a little creativity-could figure out how to allow athletic opportunities for trans girls who wish to participate athletically while still protecting safety and fairness for cis girls. For instance, the guidelines for badminton or volleyball would probably be different than for track &field or soccer. Some athletes might be happy to train with and be a part of a team, but have other responsibilities during actual competition. These won’t solve every challenge, but they could help many more trans youth than the draconian, one-size-fits-all laws currently being enacted.

One thing i find most important in every group of people, every community, every nation, every institution is the ability to reflect on your own group. Even if you are part of something, you must always be able to step back and honestly reflect on things going on within this specific group. This is also what i have been missing atleast in the very vocal part of the LGBTQ community. From my point of view they lack mechanisms to reflect on issues within their own community and to respectfully disagree and discuss. It seems to me that members of the LGBTQ community that speak out against structural issues are often antagonized and receive pure hate. This is a huge red flag for any group, if they lack the mechanisms to deal with issues.

The statistic that shows that 14/15 year old boys will beat adult females is even more crazy than it initially seems. Because it's not just that they are biologically advanced, they are so advanced that they can even make up a lack in skill and technique that adult women have over them as they have trained longer and are also smarter. The argument of transphobia is mostly ridiculous. If people were transphobic, they would be against trans atheletes in general. But it's only trans women that get targeted because trans men come to the playing field with a disadvantage, so most people don't care if they compete in the same league. The very vocal advocates are actually and ironically hurting the cause more than they are helping it. Because in the end, I'm very much a libertarian. You are free to live your life as you want as long as you don't hurt anybody. But trans females do when it comes to sports.

I have no problem with a man identifying as a woman, but I do have a problem with a man identifying as female then dissing biological women and particularly our female atheletes who have worked hard for their competition position on a level playground to other female atheletes. The Australian rugby player who identifies as a woman but has fathered three children, still has his genitalia and lives with his wife and children. 0. I appreciate the frequent disclaimers that issues regarding marginalized communities need to be addressed with care and kindness. 1. Being in the broader LGBTQ community doesn't necessarily mean anyone can speak properly for transgender individuals. You do present your stance as a evidence-based opinion which I thoroughly appreciate, because evidence holds regardless of how you identify. But in general, I don't feel comfortable speaking for Black people at large _as_ a Black person. No group is monolith, even when we acknowledge and accept scientifically relevant evidence. Because even evidence must be weighed properly with other factors such as values. Boiling some discussions down to simple scientific evidence can create a purely utilitarian approach to solving problems that becomes less "human." 12:00 2. I also fight this tendency, but you don't need to earn the respect of straight people who don't value you in the first place. It is good to want to base your opinion in fact and acknowledge matters that don't always bend an argument to "let you get your way." But I would say to do that for yourself and for truth and not for the majority. You don't need to earn our respect as people. You should have that as default as people. 3. And more specifically, a transgender league or division of sports isn't feasible for a couple of reasons, and it's deeply problematic for one other: 3a. There's not enough transgender athletes at any level of competition to create a league. Especially at the school level where people are still trying to identify their identities. 3b. Even if you had enough folks for a transwoman or transman league, you'd have to find resources for leagues when ciswomen already have trouble having resources for their own leagues to play professionally. You'd likely have even fewer resources and sponsors to support the league and competitions. 3c. This also doesn't quite consider how people identify and present and transition. In the same sense that not every trans person wants to use HRT or present as a man or woman to identify outside of binary gender, trans athletes may not want to effectively dope "up" with testosterone or dope "down" or have surgery to play. That's more of a concern at elite levels of competition, but it is a consideration: trans and how trans people present is _broad._ 3d. And even with consideration of the physical differences between men and women (and as you mentioned, those who are intersex and those like Caster Semenya who do not know they were intersex, because your first birthday gender assignment is very often the equivalent of that "How I Met Your Mother" meme), creating a broad, formalized league "othering" people who are deeply marginalized may do more harm to the trans community than the relatively few transwomen athletes that dominate women's sports (because despite the general differences between the broader two sexes, not every transwoman dominates in her sport.) In fact, that sad, White girl (Chelsea Miller) who was beaten by by transgirl athletes in TRACK? The girl you showed a lot in this video? She later *_BEAT_* one of the trans athletes she's suing in the 55-meter dash to win her class title. My point is that if there's a solution, it's going to be best if it's nuanced solution that isn't broad inclusion or exclusion with the understanding that competitive sports are inherently unfair for reasons outside of identity, puberty, and hormones. Like training facilities, income, size differences within cisgender athletes, and many more. The science must definitely be part of the discussion, but it's not sufficient to broadly say trans athletes shouldn't ever be able to participate with cis athletes, even at elite levels of competition.

What is frustrating is when politicians step in and push their agendas instead of letting the local groups of people that should be working on the policies do their job. State athletic boards should be working on the policies, the NCAA should be working on these policies, and professional sports organizations should be working on these policies. This should not be for federal level politicians to be sticking their nose in until the groups that should be doing it abdicate their responsibilities. Even then, it should only be to force these organizations to do their job.

Thank you for this level headed and very scientific look at this issue. Personally, if they want to compete I have no problem with that but they need their own leagues. We have mens sports and womens sports because of the physical differences that exist, so having trans sports wouldn't be that odd I think, just another league for those that want to compete. We also have paralympic sports leagues, so adding another league wouldn't be that odd. I DO think that trans men and women ARE men and women, but they are also physically different and they need a place where they can compete against others like themselves, make it fair for all. And I know that the numbers issue will come up, but everyone has to start somewhere. There weren't that many female competitors for things when women were allowed to compete in sports but they persevered and over time gained more members. So it's not that farfetched. But if you say that still won't work, having a sports category for Open Competition, where anyone of any gender can compete, that might work but I think it would have to be something like boxing, where you have "weights" and compete against others that match your level/skill and size.

Made this comment as a reply at first, but I believe this is also important for the creator of this video: (Context of talking about the beginning of the video showing bias) The issue kinda lies with having to make both an informative but also atleast somewhat visually entertaining video. For example with the clips at the beginning, while they do get you hooked onto the discussion, they can also Form a slight biased already, which goes a bit against the thing of "Form opinion upon facts, not facts upon opinion"... There are also a lot of other places where the video goes more into opinion rather than facts... like, it listed comparisons between cis men and cis women... but never about trans women and cis women... there's also the curiosity of, if there's such a big difference in pre-T women, and Non-pre-T women (aka. Women who had high amounts of Testosterone before but now equal, to women who always had equal), then how come there isn't a single instance of a ciswoman simply taking testosterone for a bit (like even a year should be enough), then going back to estrogen for a year, which legally allows her to particapate, while still having the claimed "advantages".... In short, cis women can get the exact same condition, yet not a single one has ever done it... even taking in mind that obviously a VERY HIGH majority wouldn't WANT to take Testosterone ever, There should Still be instances... Yet none... And the biggest problem for me personally: it doesn't even showcase any kind of solution... it only states that it's maybe unfair.. it doesn't state how unfair that it would require a change (both in quality and quantity), it doesn't state anything we should do about it... nothing... And with this, you're just gonna follow the same Mentality of "just ban them", without giving the slightest thought of the consequences of this... Like straightup making all trans athletes Lose their entire career, their entire Job... their entire life... Just like that... Is that really more fair in your view? This video goes zero in depth into what would actually matter in a discussion like this.. Like that we should make access to puberty blockers more viable for trans kids, so that claimed unfairness wouldn't even happen at all... Yet nothing... just yet another drifting video of the many trying to be factual, while having zero essense at the end...

As someone who is transgender, I don’t know why it’s so hard for some to accept that transwomen AREN’T women. Sure, you have some that are better able to pass than others, or might even be pretty, but that still does not negate your biology. I just don’t get it. What happened to rationale?! Transwomen should NOT be competing against women! Here’s the thing… I transitioned at puberty. It’s been 30 years, and guess what??? I STILL would not compete against a woman (on top of the fact that I don’t have an athletic bone in my body). Grow up, America. Live your life how you want, but don’t get in the way of others being able to live their lives. Women deserve their own spaces. Also, why don’t we see TRANSMEN (male identified individuals who are born female) wanting to compete with/against biological men??? You know why??? Because they know they’d get their butts handed to them. I’m saddened at what this community has become.

Blame the transphobes for this but also the radical left, SJWs bc their views are equally as fucked up. You can support trans ppl but also just accept that they need their own league or compete with their biological sex for everything to be fair. I don’t think they have to share locker rooms w their bio sex tho, but I know that be it’s own issue in the media. It’s all very tricky.

God this subject is so hard for me. For so long I totally didn't care about trans women in sports. I was a professional in my sport for 15 years, and it is a sport where men and women compete together as equals. For a decade and a half I, as an AFAB nonbinary person, competed in equestrian sports against women and men equally. I did not care one little bit about trans women competing in women's sports, as my experience had taught me that it didn't really matter. Until the Lia Thomas thing happened. Before I was an equestrian, I was a swimmer. Lived my life in the water. As a prepubescent kid I competed in the girls competitions, but we held practice with boys and girls together. At that age, I was extremely competitive with all the boys on my team, and there was only one boy who would regularly outswim me in practice. However, the fastest kid our age was actually a girl. After puberty was a completely different story. This Lia Thomas thing, and the times that she had in those competitions, it rocked my world. I started having doubts about the way I thought about transgender people in sports. There really are physical changes that happen during male puberty that cannot be undone. With some sports it probably doesn't matter. At lower levels of competition, it doesn't need to be a big concern. However, at the upper levels of competition where there is a lot at stake, I think I need to reevaluate my position. I have been doing a lot of research to try and figure out if I can find some kind of resolution. Unfortunately, I have not yet found that resolution, and that fact really bothers me a lot.

There's a reason why you don't hear trans-men obliterating men, how trans woman are beating biological woman. It's not fair to take away a womans only safe place like that. Well done. I’m gay also and support trans people in their struggle. However, enough with the sacrificing of women’s rights for the sake of a few biologically male trans athletes. It’s simply fake! Trans people just need to form their own competitions such that their playing field is level, for them and not expect to compete against biological women. It’s not enough to simply declare yourself a ‘woman’ and then join their sports, whilst still having all your male junk often. Interestingly, you don’t see trans men wanting to compete with biological men in sports. They simply can never catch up, so no point. And can we please start talking about the inherent homophobia of often jumping to stereotype so called non conforming boys, as trans when they are young. This is blatant homophobia within our community whilst we are expected to support these same trans women. We should be encouraging all people to love their bodies and not see them as a barrier to however they want to live or express themselves, not facilitating young people to believe their bodies are the problem. This is homophobia! And lastly, can we also start the conversation about the links between autism spectrum disorder and trans rights activists. Clearly, there are issues of neuro divergence for many trans activists in forming a trans identity, which is then rigidly pushed as if it applies to all. It doesn’t. If you have autism and are trans, don’t group those two issues and confuse and conflate the effects. This is harming our LGB communities and for me they are not the same set of issues. Sexuality and gender disphoria are completely different. And gender disphoria is a syndrome which needs much careful compassionate support. And autism also needs to be understood and treated, especially where it expresses as gender disphoria and activism. This last category is a disability issue in the first instance.

I do not believe transgender men or women should be able to compete against cis gender people in sports other than just for fun being on a team setting and nothing one on one. I've seen how ripped Trans Men can get in just one year on T and had more muscle then i ever did naturally 😂🎉🎉.. Its not fair to knock the cis girls out of winning. As a thought for this disparity, when women were first allowed to become police, firefighters, and elite military, there was a different measure for skills between men and women. A woman doing the same task was measured at a different level from the men. Through an obstacle course, men and women have a different time to qualify. Women have a lower time. As an example, men need to do the course in 4 minutes, but women need to do it in 4 1/2 minutes. Rather like women's tees in golf. Perhaps transwomen could be given a different time to finish a race, or seconds added to their time. This wouldn't work for a lot of elite sports, but perhaps it could work in others. Just a thought.

It’s not ALMOST erasing women‘s opportunities. IT IS. Also I dislike the term cis. It’s insulting. And since half the population is female it’s insulting to way more people than there are people from the small group of transitioners. It’s the same story every time: women‘s integrity and possibilities are being attacked not men‘s. Or did you ever hear of trans men coming down on males because they want to have access to their spaces and sports? No. Why is that? Because men in general act more aggressive (I don’t mean that in the violent sense) than women. Women are also more likely to try and deescalate, so since adults or teens who transition are socialized in their birth sexes, they will likely continue to behave according to their socialization and biology. Meaning: The relentless push from born males into female sports without considering twice or being reflective about it is exactly proving and pointing to the fact that they are indeed born males and NOT women, as they claim. Just do your own thing guys and leave the women alone. And of course, this is only spoken „in general“ as of course not every transitioner is like that or his ambitions in sports. I do know trans people who are perfectly fine, but I fear all the activism and the unfairness in sports is not helping in their acceptance.

@@laurenmaxell5917 cis is no scientific term at all. It was invented by the movement and activists. By the way they are insisting on their pronouns and are calling for respect, but won’t even respect the wishes of other people how they want to be called and start harassing them if they don’t behave like they want them to. It’s a narcissistic movement of narcissistic people that think the world revolves around their stuff alone. They’re all loving and supportive- as long as it serves their interests. And I EXPLICITLY talk about the movement, not about single people here. I’m sick and tired of minority movements bullying the majority of people into submission. I won‘t have it, I won’t accept the term cis and I won’t accept e.g. period underwear companies that try to sell the idea men could have periods, when it just is plain nonsense to appease a tiny minority that seems to have so little self esteem that they can’t admit their original biology anymore. This is a culture war where words play an important role. I picked my side after researching the issue and therefore I won’t accept the term cis, no matter Hof often people like you claim it was scientific when it is not. Also men can’t get pregnant or have periods and trans women should stay out of female sports. There are only two sexes, male and female, who are called men and women.
