I really enjoy this band, and dig this chart. When I hear it I ask myself "Why can't I write something like that?"

Write your own music. For me at least that's the 'take away' from hearing this.

I played this my senior year of high school and it was my favorite piece we played that year. Keep up the good work Argue!

Great composer, great band. I see them every time they come to NYC and appear at the Jazz Gallery, best jazz venue for imaginative, innovative, inspiring jazz and associated music. The compositions are thrilling to hear and experience.

The best version of this I heard tonight, by the University of Oregon's Jazz Ensemble. The flugel was beyond anything I've ever heard.

Played this last year in my high school jazz band on piano, and even though it took a good couple of weeks to learn the rhythm, it ended up being one of my favorite pieces I have played to date. Keep making wonderful music!

"Rhythm is substituting for harmony?" What the hell are you talking about? The music is "static, in the sense of lack of motion?" Did you listen past the opening chorale? If you don't like the music, that's fine. You're certainly entitled to that opinion...maybe Glenn Miller is more your speed. But your comments are idiotic. You might as well have said that the saxes needed more valve juice to get their tuning wax cylinder up to full speed.

I know what he means, though I probably enjoy it more than he does. This music comes as much from modern classical composition, including Minimalism, as it does from jazz. Rather than melodies and changes, it has big blocks of sound - all moving against, across, and occasionally head-on into one another. You do have to listen to it with different ears than Ellington, Basie, Mingus, or even Don Ellis.

I think you're not understanding the terminology here. Harmonic motion means the changing of chords, and the entire piece is melody over one chord with the exception of the introductory chorale you mentioned. It's pretty much the definition of static harmony. That doesn't make it bad, but the assertion of "static" isn't wrong at all.

ridiculous trumpet solo!

This is wind ensemble music played by a jazz band. Rhythm is substituting for harmony. The leader even conducts like it was a wind ensemble. Not to my tastes or aesthetic for jazz. Not badly done, the players all sound wonderful, but the music is static, in the sense of lack of motion. MBB
