Well done. Pulling the metal sleeve/seal out of the transmission casting is a pain, so I'm very glad that you showed a way to do it. Also the bolt loosening sequence to get the pan to drain controllably into a drain pan is also a good time saver and mess saver. If you loosen all the bolts at once with no plan for drainage, you'll wind up with a mess. The new filter I bought was plastic, and the replacement gasket was junk. The original gasket was still in reusable shape even after 230,000 miles. Wish I would have known that before buying junk replacements. Thanks for your help.

Attacking that seal with a pick and screwdriver risky business. That bore can get gouged and suck some air, or even worse crack. There's better ways; i use a two jaw puller.

I did this in my 2002 Continental. The factory gasket is indeed reusable. I did reuse mine and 2 years/15,000 miles later it hasn't leaked a drop. Also since the factory gasket is plastic with a rubber seal, its easier to keep in position while reinstalling the pan.

warning: at 11:45 when you take out the old rubber be sure it has the metal sleeve. the other videos dont show this and I mistakenly pulled out the inner rubber and the metal sleeve just looked like part of the housing. my new filter would not go in. it took me days of experimenting before I figured this out. The point is, watch as many videos as you can. I watched 3 or 4 and none showed this metal part. this video did not show on my list, and I could have save alot of time. Although I would suggest you edit out the dead portions where you walk away, we dont have time to sit around and wait. but a great job anyway.

Would it help if I change the fluid and put a new gasket and filter?

For a Windstar (the vehicle I have) '95 to 98 it uses Mercon and '99 and later is Mercon V fluid. If you are just draining and refilling it should be around 4.5 qts and if it was completely dry it takes 12.25 qts.. This is all according to the Hanes manual.
@918hatch
@918hatch 6 лет назад
Hi there, I ran over a rock. I understand the "v" word that I can't spell. I dropped the pan, and most of my fluid has drained out, before the pan drop. Replaced the filter, gasket, and pan. Does this count as a full fluid change? Or do I had about 6 quarts check and then add the rest of the 7 qaurts? Thank you very much
@williamgonsalves1312
@williamgonsalves1312 5 лет назад
if you rebuilt the transmission howcome you didnt know the filter gasket was hard to remove. Also not explain the cross pattern tightening sequence for the pan bolts.
@endermwatts
@endermwatts 5 лет назад
IF I am understanding you and you just removed the pan and replaced the filter and gasket in my application ('01 Windstar) it would only take about 4.5 qts of Mercon V fluid to get it back to where it should be give or take a little. If you are talking about adding somewhere around 13 qts (6 + 7) that would only be if the whole transmission was completely drained of ALL fluid.

Sort of an unrelated question, but do you know how to remove the shift shaft out of these transmissions? My Taurus has the 4F50N (not sure how much different these two transmissions are) and the very tip of the shift shaft BROKE. Now the car can't be driven because it won't shift out of park (or into any gear for that matter) and the linkage and metal plate that's suppose to bolt onto the shaft just flops around when you "go through the gears" with the gear selector.
@FixingWithPassion
@FixingWithPassion 7 лет назад
The only way to fix it is to pull the tranny and replace the shifter ;( To break that shifter something had to be jammed pretty bad.
@JakeFromLateFarm
@JakeFromLateFarm 7 лет назад
TVWXMAN32 -- Daaaang! :(( At the very least I appreciate your response! Let's say I was crazy enough to take the transmission out, take it apart and replace that shaft. What would be involved in removing that shaft from the trans? How would you take it out exactly? I watched your AX4N disassembly video, forgive me if I overlooked that part.
@FixingWithPassion
@FixingWithPassion 7 лет назад
You could do that, take it apart and just replace the rod. I'd have to go back and look at my old video and see whats involved. Or just go back and look at the other video. It might be more detailed.
