Transplanting Tomato Seedlings Outdoors: Expert Tips for Garden Success
Transplanting Tomatoes outdoors. Gardening hacks
You will need
Tomato seedlings (grow them from seeds as they are cheaper than store-bought transplants)
Old potting soil
Chicken pellet manure or slow-release organic fertiliser
Fish bone meal
Stakes/cages/trellises
Labels
Watering can
To reuse old potting soil from last year and transplant tomato seedlings into the garden, follow these steps:
Inspect the soil and check the old potting soil for any volunteer tomatoes and save them, they will need individual pots. Then remove any debris or weeds. Doing this is cost-effective and reduces the need to buy potting soil, saving money.
To amend the soil, add slow-release organic fertiliser such as compost, chicken pellet manure, fish bone meal to replenish nutrients and improve soil structure. If the soil appears compacted, loosen the soil to a depth of about 12 inches (30 cm) and transplant the seedlings, one seedling per pot or container. Carefully remove the tomato seedlings from their pots, being mindful not to damage the roots. Dig a hole in the prepared soil that is slightly larger than the root ball of the seedling. Place the seedling in the hole and backfill with soil, gently firming it around the base of the plant.
Plant marigolds around the edge of the pot, at least 6-8 inches away from the tomato plant. Marigolds reduce the need for chemical pesticides and adds beauty to your container garden.
After transplanting, water the seedlings deeply to settle the soil and provide moisture to the roots. Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Break up any clumps and aerate the soil. This will help improve drainage and root growth.
To practice annual pot rotation for tomatoes, grow them in potting soil that was used for growing something other that tomato last growing season. We grew groundnuts in this pot last year, so inspect the soil for volunteer groundnut, save them and plant in another container.
Keep an eye on the tomato plants for signs of stress, pests or diseases. Provide support, such as stakes or cages.
Remove the suckers (small shoots that grow between the main stem and branches) to direct the plant's energy into producing fruits. Fertilize as needed throughout the growing season with organic fertilisers, following recommended guidelines.
