First installment of a series all about Transportation in Columbus: The Current & The Future. One of the first things people moving here notice is just how easy and relatively traffic free getting around is....however, that only applies if you have access to a car. This will be an increasingly hot topic over the next 25 years as Columbus enters into what I think will be the golden years for the area. We have time, but must act now to get this right to provide a more dense and walkable city where you don't have to have a vehicle to enjoy the ease of access and getting around.

About Me
After growing up in Central Ohio, the natural progression is to move to Columbus, but this was a very different town in the early 2000s. After surviving the Great Recession, Columbus has been on an absolute tear. While the recession was rough, we tended to fare better than many other cities partially due to the diverse amount of employers in the area. That, along with a focus on redevelopment of areas close to Downtown, population growth and the relatively cheap cost of living have helped buoy the Central Ohio area.
It doesn't seem that long ago in 2009 when residents were stoked to get Yuengling Lager to the area. Fast forward a short decade and today we have over 50 local breweries and our own "Ale Trail". That is just one of the fantastic changes.
Leaving for ten years, I left more or less a cow town and returned to a City bustling with boutique shops, coffee houses and restaurants, a renewed focus on fitness and somehow it seemed sunnier. In fact, it was such a cool city that we decided to stay.

It's kinda depressing seeing European cities with way less people than Columbus have better public transportation. Also, I really wish the city would also add a ton of protected bike lanes and possibly something similar to Atlanta's belt line.

Great video tackling one of Columbus' foremost shortcomings!!!. For the "How* to build the "light rail," it can be done in sky bridge style like the one in Seattle and other cities! The engineers can come up with the best way possible!

The cota buses stop running at 10pm. You have to add time on when the bus arrives at the bus stop.

In your opinion, what is the most challenging them relying on COTA for transportation?

My wife was born in Columbus, OH and i was born in Cleveland, OH where only the GCRTA buses run 24/7 not the trains but COTA stopped running at 10pm.

COTA could do better/longer hours. We need ridership up though

I actually I've in Houston and Columbus ... Public transportation here is completely sub par we need rail. Brt is an antiquated solution and will not be heavily utilized. This lack of investment in public transportation will definitely impede the city's growth .

This is my fear as well. I don't think BRT is radical enough

Wrong traffic sucks in Columbus with average backups 3-4 miles of bumper to bumper.Major streets like East Broad St could take you as long as 40 minutes to go half miles to one mile near mt Carmel East.Near all interstate splits could congest for 20-30 min delay

Not my experience at all. Sure, Columbus has bad traffic compared to Chillicothe but not compared to Cincy for instance. That said, there are for sure bottle necks at certain areas/times of day.
