Dr. Eric Ballon-Landa talks the risks of the various types of prostate biopsies. Increasingly we are moving from a transrectal biopsy to a transperineal biopsy as there are much fewer risks when compared to traditional biopsy.
Dr. Eric Ballon-Landa provides comprehensive urologic care for both male and female patients. In addition to general urology, he performs robotic surgery of the prostate, bladder, kidney, and ureter; microsurgical treatment of varicocele and spermatic cord denervation; ultrasound-guided percutaneous kidney stone surgery; and minimally invasive surgeries for benign prostate hyperplasia (REZUM, Urolift).
In addition, Dr. Ballon-Landa evaluates and treats urologic cancer of the prostate, kidney, ureter, bladder, testis, and penis, and performs MRI- and ultrasound-guided transperineal prostate biopsy in clinic. More information online at www.slucare.com

They never discuss dignity of patient. Having had both procedures, can tell you the effectiveness of both procedures is identical. The humiliation factor of transperinal approach is off the charts - feet up, legs spread, fully exposed to 2-3 female techs/nurses and the urologist. Also hurts a lot more. Go transrectal for your prostate cancer biopsy. Even my urologist told me “I’m not doing transperineal if and when I get prostate cancer”.
